Are used speakers OK?

I want a pair of Nautilus 802's but the only way I can get a new pair is if I steal them. So I thought I would get a used pair...

Do speakers break down over time?

How old is okay?

Speakers have not seemed to change much (I'm no expert), the basic design seems to endure and the only changes I see are in the materials used (except for subs). Is there a lot of technological change with speakers like their are with system components? Do I run the risk of getting an "obsolete" speaker?

Muchas gracias guys

55" Panasonic VT50 (hopefully snag a 65" VT60 before they are history)
Denon 5308ci (want to upgrade to a model with 3d HDMI pass-through)
Oppo Blu-Ray Player
2 KEF iQ90 Floorstanding Speakers for L&R Channels
KEF iQ60c Center Channel
4 KEF iQ8ds Di-Pole Surrounds
KEF PSW2500 Sub
Xbox 360
Xbox One

I have saved a ton of money buying used speakers. My current mains would have been a little over 10k or maybe a little less if I could have gotten a discount. I got them used literally like new for 6350. I've been lucky with ally used speaker purchases so far. Most have been shipped to me with only one small damage issue. I'm talking a dozen or more pairs. I have also heard some horror stories. I'd say be careful but go for it.

Something like that would be the best way to buy them if you can find them. The guy before you helped you out buy breaking them in and eating the appreciation. Nine times out of ten somebody is selling speakers to get new ones, so there is usually nothing wrong with them and in most cases they are a year or two old not to mention most are willing to deal to get rid of them.

I've bought plenty of used speakers with not too many serious issues. Be willing to pay in the neighborhood of +/- 40% retail for anything when it comes to high end, but it normally pays off, the higher the quality and expensive when new, the better chance they were well taken care of.
Audiophiles are great that way, esp. since, unlike cars and motorcycles, audiophiles have usually spent their own money, not daddy's.
