I started a thread yesterday that might have some overlap with what you are trying to accomplish.

Hey, I'm not looking for a receiver.
I also want the system to have a volume control. Either via a control pod or on the speakers.
So we are looking for different things, thanks.

I have and use the Corsair SP2500 speakers with my desktop computer. I find that they sound great and can get very loud.

I use the Audioengine 2 speakers, which are $198, and I think they are hard to beat.

The volume control is on the back, but I just set it and then control the volume on my computer sound mixer.

I would go for a Lepai 2020A+ T-amp, then add a pair of Micca MB42X speakers, and finally a Dayon SUB-800. Pick up some speaker wire and a 3.5mm to RCA cable from www.monoprice.com and you have an excellent 2.1 system, with volume control, that will be much better than any multi-media setup from the likes of Logitech/Corsair/Creative/etc.

There's a ton of options to choose from. Here are links to just a few companies selling them...

Most of those will be systems with decent sound quality, but not something an audiophile would be interested in. If you want to go that route check out the Swan GT1000 or M50W instead.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

The speaker/amp combo seems interesting. And if I could get something cheaper, that would be great.

This will give me the volume control I desire.

Thing is, I have limited desk space. I need to replace my logitech z4 speakers that died on me. Those have a width of 3.1"

Do u know any speakers I can use with the amp combo that has a width similar to that?
