Yeah it's a dumb question but bear with me. So basically I have a solid black matte pirate themed media room, black everything, except for a few dark gold or bronze highlights like my cupholders and a small amount on my picture frames. If I put some nice towers in, a modern design with shiny piano black is going to look dumb. Even mostly blacked out and duller but with plastic silver highlights like the Polk ati's aren't going to be perfect.

Now what would be perfect, is some scary looking Gryphon Atlantis towers.

http://www.gryphon-audio.dk/products.../atlantis.aspx

But, they're 30 grand. Anybody know of some interesting and blacked out speakers for normal people? The kind you don't find at Best Buy? SVS might work but if there is anything more evil looking I might be interested.

Apparently I have to have a doctorate in crossover design to do such a thing or else I would.

These JBL Studio 530's have a nice murdered out and unique appearance (Pirates are unique looking is the thought ) to them (they are also very highly regarded, I'm testing a pair out right now in fact):

Yeah, I need those. Did you build that? Reminds me of the Klipsch THX's.

I have zero hesitation about building a cabinet like that but everybody's scaring me around here with their crossover talk.

Those focals look very nice. It just ticks me off when they take a perfectly good black and gray speaker then tack silver on it.

Why not buy the speakers that sound best you you and hide them behind some black grille cloth on which you had stenciled a skull and crossed bones?

To be honest, its because I like seeing the drivers. I want to prop them up with no grill on, that's why I want everything to be blacked out. I don't want to see any silver or gloss black. Being able to see an inverted dust cap gets bonus points.

Now that's a great idea! Just remove and re-use the existing plastic frame. Perfect match and you can go hog wild in the art department.

No, they are JTR 215's.

I did build my subs (well... kind of they are flat packs), if you look in the picture they are hidden (built frames and covered in velvet) in the front corners behind the speakers, 8 18" subs, 4 stacked per corner.

So I trust that price includes your own baby sand worm and a cool trick hydration suit that "recycles" your own sweat and urine for those days when you're unwittingly caught out in Death Valley?! lol

Aaaaand... I just figured out where to get some bigger DIY kits where I don't have to jack with designing any crossovers. Maybe make my own scary black towers.

For everyone looking at that photo; carp is not 5' 2", he's about 6', so that should give you a better idea of what he's standing next to.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

Hey Jim!

Ahhh yes. Too bad Archaea wouldn't let me play it when he was here the other night.... I just can't win him over. We did end up watching "The Breaking Point" episode from Band of Brothers. That series is so good and always makes me feel like a complete *ussy/piece of spoiled sh*t.

My wife took that picture and she's tiny and with me standing back from the front baffle makes the speaker look even taller than it is. It does not need to be any taller than it is, haha.

B&W Nautilus would be ideal if money was no object.

You could also look at the SVS Ultra speakers, or check out Audiogon for some great deals on some stellar speakers like Revel Ultimas.

You could just find some regular speakers and paint the cabinet. You might also go for a kit, where you deal with the cabinet finish yourself. Head on over to the DIY subforum and see what can be done. Many of those kits come shipped with the crossover already assembled. I know the ones from Pi speakers do.

The SHO-10's were a great value, maybe these are too. First time I'm seeing them.

I can't believe those are $399 each with a ribbon tweeter and multiple mid/woofers that seem to be built well. Not really top of the line I'm sure, but at the same time, I doubt I could buy the raw materials for $399 and seriously doubt anything I could build would look that good.
