Are you talking about each, or for the pair?

Some people like the Infinity Primus line like the 363. I have no direct experience with them. There is also the Pioneer SP-FS52 that some like as well and they are pretty cheap. I only have a few pair of the bookshelf version of the Pioneer the BS22 and I like them quite a bit. Both of those are under your budget and even leave some room for a good budget sub like the Dayton SUB-1200.

I would look at the JBL Studio 190 towers - sold each, and a good price

Well I can't speak for that particular more budget minded series, but the Studio 5 series I can, they're beyond your price range, at least any of the towers are, but the best speakers I've ever owned up this point are my JBL Studio 530's. They are within reach of your budget at $479, but they are a bookshelf speaker. They're fantastic and easily fill my 13x19' listening room and I feel no need for a tower.

While I prefer the higher-end JBL speakers - a lot of people do like the Studio 190.

Another one to look at, and they make good stuff - HTD Level Two.

Honestly, picking the best speaker for someone is like us picking out their favorite shirt. We can't do it, only you can.

AMEN! Go out there and LISTEN. That is the only way to know if you will like the sound of the speakers you buy. Nobody else can tell you what you will like. If you can't find the time, then just be sure you can return the speakers.

If you can raise your budget these would be excellent. Otherwise I would go with the HTD Level Two Towers.

$450 isn't much for high quality, new towers. Look at second hand. Or standmounts

Krell Evolution 900e x 7

Bose Jewel speakers.

Jealous of my speakers?

For absolutely the best measuring and likely sounding affordable towers are the Philharmonic Audio (Dennis Murphy of Salk fame) modded Pioneer 52 towers. These are just being made available and are not on his website yet. But if you email him, he'll get you going. You can check out the little brothers, the Affordable Monitors, on the website. These have been called the best value at the CAF show last week.

The towers are $279...A PAIR!!!

http://philharmonicaudio.com/index.html

Good luck with your search.

BTW, here is the Philharmonic AVS thread. Dennis, IMO, is THE best speaker designer in the business.

If you are patient and want to go that route - then Dennis will begin taking orders again
around August 12 - However, you can Email him in advance.

He does a good job - and he has modded 2 different brand speakers for me.

Your call

I wrote a detailed review around here somewhere, of the Philharmonic 2's (2,000/pair). I compared it at length to my Aerial Acoustics 7Bs ($6,000/pair). I retired the Aerials within a couple of days. I've auditioned and reviewed most of the Salk speakers, and there is a solid family relation amongst them all...detailed, smooth power response, great measuring...razor smooth across the frequency range.

The modded Pioneers are not going to whip top-of-the-line speakers. But for the money, I can't imagine anything approaching the quality.

If you like clean sound reproduction (your hifi?), then anything Dennis puts out is your ticket. And his prices are dumb-inexpensive. I think he does his thing for fun...certainly not profit. I would happily own anything he makes. That...and he is generally one of the finest, most helpful and trustworthy people in this business...as well as a premier speaker designer. Check the Philharmonic (and Salk, for that matter) thread on this forum to see what I mean.

Hahaaa...if you couldn't tell...I'm a big fan. But so are the others who own his speakers.

The overall sound is smooth, coherent/cohesive with good detail and definition.
Much better than what you would find in the average Best Buy and Frys stores,
where their speakers would cost double or more.

I would take his modded speakers over Infinity, Polk, Klipsch, HTD, low-level JBL,
low level Boston, low level PSB, etc;

Another speaker to consider is the Ascend CMT-340 SE. New they go for 570 per pair, but you can easily find a used pair under 450. I'm in love with these speakers. They have airy highs that I typically only hear in speakers that are 1000+ per pair. I've listened to them against the unmodded Pioneers, and there is no comparison. (I'd be very interested to compare them against the Dennis Murphy mods.)

Product website:

And a pro review:
