Looking to upgrade, help

Hi everyone, i'm currently running a 2.1 system. 2 speakers and a sub. Should i go 3.1? or full 5.1? or Amp?

Budget: $500-1000.
Purpose of use: Desktop home theater

I'm very happy with the quality i'm getting now, but i'm wondering if i could possibly do anything further to make the sound even better? Should i buy an Amp? What is a pre-amp? Do i need both in order to work. Can i hook the Amp to my receiver, will i gain any performances? If your nice enough, can you like me some products for me to check it out please?

If i'm under budget, you can also tell me. So i can save up and buy one in the near future. Every input counts and hope you could help!
Thank you so much and have a good day!

What do you currently have? It's usually difficult to properly set up a 5.1 system at a desk. New speakers/sub would probably be the best route.

I'm just wondering will an amplifier give me better performance, if so, how much will i be looking to spend. Is the difference in terms of performance marginal or tremendously difference.

You need to answer my first question before I can comment about anything else.

Do you have a receiver for them? A discrete amp won't do you any good, if you want to upgrade you would need nicer speakers or a nicer sub. For a bedroom the M8 is a good choice.

Since sub is fine for now, what can i possibly upgrade next? More speakers? or ball out on a more expensive one? or leave it the way it is?

Sound card? DAC? headphones?

Thanks!

mh522,

Your current information is limited and have most AVS members guessing on what you really want. Click on the thread link by cel4145, it'll take you to a post where you can look at the required information to be divulged in this thread so that AVS members can assist.

Put all this info in the 1st post (you can go back and edit it).

So far all we know is that:

(a) You have two speakers (PSB ?);
(b) You have a sub (M8?);
(c) You have an AVR (Denon AVR-X1000?);
(d) You sit at a desk; and
(e) Budget is $500 to $1,000?

It's important to have some goals you'd like to achieve.
Transmaniacon and dsrussell like this.

Maranatz NR1504, Oppo BPD-93, MTV 7000D, LG LW6500, aTV, WDTV Live, Harmony 650 remote, KEF E301, MiniDSP(2x4), Rythmik F12G
