If you had a choice...

Hello - looking to poll members on an upgrade choice that I will be making over the next couple of months. I have a milestone birthday approaching and my wife has asked what I would like as a gift to upgrade my system. I am trying to decide between upgrading to Paradigm Studio 60s or upgrading my sub to a JL Audio E112. My current front speakers are Paradigm Monitor 7 v6. My current sub is a Def Tech Pro Sub 1000.

Thanks! Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Due to the sub you own - go for the JL

Sub choice

If you are considering upgrading your sub, I would recommend the GoldenEar Force Field 5 over the JL e112. I have owned both a Def Tech Pro Sub 1000 and a GoldenEar Force Field sub. The GoldenEar performs at a level far above the DefTech, and the cost is less than half of the JL sub.

As others have suggested, the E112 is probably a worthwhile upgrade.

If you take yourself too seriously expect me to do the exact opposite

I would push for studios 60s and an SVS pb12 or 13. That being said why not studio 20 bookshelves and the JL or SVS. Not knocking JL as I have spent a mint on their car audio products but you could do a little better for the money. Either way enjoy your future birthday gift.

Thank you to everyone who responded! I appreciate all of the advice and opinions. I'm leaning in the direction of the E112. In comparing the studio 60s to my monitor 7s I learned that the driver number, configuration and driver size are identical. Obviously the enclosures, port configuration and driver qualities are different, but based on these facts I'm not convinced the difference in sound quality will be that significant. My main complaint about the monitor 7s is the bass response is a tad bit weak for my tastes. Perhaps a more "musical" sub is what is needed.

I may have to run over to my local shop to see if they have some Studio 60s in stock for audition. I've had the opportunity to audition the E112 and was very impressed.

My main complaint about my current sub is that it seems to handle HT applications a lot better than 2channel music applications. The E112 sounded excellent in this format during the audition. Plenty of smooth, tight bass - and it disappeared into the performance when it was not needed.

I'll keep everyone posted on what I decide to do. Either way I have a feeling it's going to be a great birthday.

Jetmech101 - thank you for the birthday wishes!

Just figured I'd chime in. I got my JL Audio E112 a few weeks ago. I upgraded from a Polk PSW125. It's paired with B&W 600 series speakers.

It's freaking amazing. Tight, punchy and powerful bass that you can really feel. This thing is easily worth the money in my opinion. The cabinet looks really nice and matches my speakers pretty well (black ash). The controls hidden under the rubber top cover is really nice too.

Agree with all the above posts.

Your weak point is your current sub (speaker are fine).
JL audio seem to make nice stuff but have no experience with there products.
I also got SVS and they do make nice stuff for the money!

PSA (power sound audio) is also a name that you should do reading on it, same as HSU and a few more.
My best word of advise is;

Do lots of reading (reviews, Pro and customer) as we All try to help, but may a bit bias in our advise since we all have our preference.
Reseach and more reseach!

Good luck and come back if you have more question or want to know more personal experience from a certain brand that you may lean upon.

Thank you for the additional information and advice regarding the E112. I still haven't settled on a decision yet as auditioned a pair of Kef R500s last week. I was impressed with the sound enough that I am considering them. These speakers seem to get phenomenal reviews and can be purchased for just a little more than the cost of the E112.

Does anyone have an opinion of these? I'm still undecided on the sub vs. front speaker choice. The paradigm monitor series is their entry level line. The KEFs would be an upgrade to a mid level line....with the price tag to go with it. When it all comes down to it, I'm trying to get the best audio value for the money!

I agree with the others that a new sub would
Be a good upgrade.

But, ..... The Studio 60's would also be a very
Good upgrade over your Monitor 7's. Big difference
If you like listening to music, not so much for just
Movies.

Maybe you can swing both???

That was my experience with the E112 as well. That little sucker is one very impressive subwoofer.

Sell the Monitor 7s and the Pro sub 1000 and get the KEF and the JL sub.
You'll be much happier

I'm a 85% music 15% HT listener. Wish I could swing both the KEF and the JL, but at the cost of those items I'm going to have to pick one or the other. That certainly doesn't mean I can't upgrade a little later down the road....but it will be a little while before I have the chance to do this significant of an upgrade.
