Ok I'm looking to upgrade my simple 2.1 sound bar set up to 5.1 surround system. I'm probably going with a Denon receiver of some sort but I'm unsure about speakers and a woofer. I have between $500 and $600 to use just on speakers (not counting the receiver). Any suggestions for the front, center, rear, or woofer? The couch is about 9 feet from the TV. Thanks in advanced!

Hopefully you can have bookshelf speakers and are not stuck with only buying small satellites?

Maybe if you can get the Pioneer BS-22 speakers. Currently $92/pr on Amazon.

Get two pair and the matching C22 center.

That leaves you about $250 - $350 for a subwoofer.

Those little Pioneers get a lot louder than you'd imagine they would. With a good sub, and I generally recommend at least two subs, it should get pretty loud. I originally bought those Pioneers for a computer setup (I now have two pair, one for the computer setup and one for a bedroom system), but used them as mains in my living room setup for a bit just out of curiosity, and they did very well in that roll too. I was shocked at how loud they could play and stay composed doing it. I use JBL Studio 530's as mains now, and they are better than the Pioneer's, but they should be as they cost 5 times as much. I could live with the Pioneers if I had to.

Wow, they sound great. If I did need smaller satellites (especially for the rears) which would you recommend? I can probably get away with the pioneers for the front but the rears would definitely need to be smaller. Thanks for the advice!

The Pioneer AJ speakers have good frequency response and are good for the price, but they have low sensitivity and many people buying them for home theater use complain they lack dynamics and "punch" and are looking for something better soon after buying them.

As important as a sub is, I would suggest buying the best 5 speakers you can get and save for a sub as your next upgrade. Maybe a Dayton 12" sub as a temporary and upgrade later or add another Dayton later.

I would recommend getting more dynamic speakers, something like these Polks:

Front and SurroundPolk Audio RTi4 BLACK Bookshelf Speakers [NEW/PAIR] - $175/pr free ship
Center: Polk Audio CSi5 BLACK RTi Center Channel Speaker[NEW] - $234 free ship

Sub: Dayton Audio SUB-1200 12" 120 Watt Powered Subwoofer - $129 free ship
