Looking for very cheap rear speakers

Hello.

I used to have a full 5 speaker set by Energy from 13 years ago and a different brand sub-woofer. After moving homes, I decided the rear Energy speakers were too large for my now different aesthetic sensitivities and gave away the two rear speakers to my parents.

A few years have gone by and I'm missing my surround sound setup so I'm upgrading the receiver with HDMI capability for all my sources and I'll only need a new pair of surround rear speakers.

I'm looking for 2-way speakers not more than 7" tall and would very much prefer for them to be white. My budget is $50. I was considering these but I'm having a hard time finding them in white anywhere.

Can anybody recommend a pair of ~$50 white small rear speakers?

Note:
Yes, I know the sound quality will not overwhelm me to tears in that price range. What I'm looking for is the best sounding speakers I can get for that price, and in that color and size.

Best regards.

Manolo

Fifty bucks for the pair? If so, I can't help you. For fifty bucks each, this comes close at $125 / pair and come in white: http://emptek.com/e3b.php (check the gallery pictures on this page).

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm literally looking for something around $50/pair.

Only thing I can think of for that criteria is Monoprice in-wall/ceiling:

I had considered that but if the mesh is cloth, I'm not sure how the painting will work out.

I had not considered that but it is very compelling since that would really place them out of site.
Are in-wall speakers at any inherent sound disadvantage from not having their own enclosure?
Are the Monoprice speakers just a convenient example or are these better alternatives than comparable offerings from other manufacturers?
Thanks.

Craigslist in your local area of Michigan would be my suggestion.

I'll take a look. It's just a bit harder to figure out what you're getting because of the information that is provided by the seller. Thanks.

I have 2 pair of these for my surround/rear surround setup. I'm sure there are plenty of better sounding options, but these work for me.

I'm not sure what's surprising about my question. Just because a $1,000 pair of speaker will generally sound much better than a $50 pair does not mean that all $50 speakers will sound the same. In fact, there will likely be more perceptible sound quality variation among $50 speakers than among $1,000 ones.

Regardless, I appreciate your recommendation. I'm seriously considering the monoprice speakers.

My point, which was not very well defined I admit, was there are very few, if any, in-wall speakers with similar specs at your price point. Having been researching speakers in the $50/pair range I assumed you already knew this.

I don't think many would be happy with them for their front soundstage, but as you will be using them for surrounds I think you would be happy with them for the price.

Got it! I did not get your meaning initially, as you noted.
Thanks a lot for the advice, neighbor (just realized you're in MI too).

I'd recommend indoor/outdoor patio/porch speakers from either Parts Express or Monoprice.

Better than in-walls?

I'd suppose it would matter on the overall quality of the speaker itself. In my opinion, in-walls can suffer from compromised bass response subject to the wall cavity available and have limited directional options. On the other hand, they do make for a very clean and professional installation.

I have a pair that might fit your needs, they are indoor?outdoor. If I can find them you can have them for the shipping price only, speakers are for free. They do sound good with a 500 watt Perraux amp and (2) 5k subs. Also have some ADS 300, they could be painted since they have a metal grill, but I can only locate one. Misplaced the other one about 10 years ago.

Have no idea about the quality but right in your price range.

Which model Energy speakers do you have up front?

Very true. I'm gonna pop some tags; only go twenty dollars in my pocket.

Thank you very much, Walter. The offer is generous and tempting but as I'm looking for something a bit smaller, I'd rather not make you go through the trouble unless I'm completely sure I'll use them. I really appreciate it.

If it's $50/pair I can't help you, but if it's $50/each, I'm thinking about this:

In fact, I'm thinking about the towers, center and the surrounds for my room.

Thank you. My speakers are "vintage" 13 year old e-XL-16B (left/right) and e-XL-C1 (center channel).

If you were willing to spend the extra $30 these would be perfect for your system.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Energy-Cente...item27eecd97ad

or these if the price doesn't go up too much.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mirage-OMNIS...item5412e3ea5b

These would also work, you even get an extra speaker.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jamo-A330-2-...3D261636733171

Maybe these Jamo speakers?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jamo-SAT-300...item2a3d7536b6

Used is probably your best bet.

ebay has a number of white speakers that would work. Some old Minimus 7s from Radio Shack. Not a bad little speaker. There are a number of Boston Acoustics speakers that would be appropriate. The Mirage Omnisats may be your best choice for surrounds due to their wide soundstage. There is also a pair of B&W Rock Solid speakers, which may be the best deal of the bunch.

Anyway, just search for "white speakers" on ebay and you will see many options. Just avoid the Bose, Pyle, and Klipsch options and you should be fine.

Thanks for the advance. I am now between the used Omnisat pair, for the promise of good sound but with the risk of being somehow damaged, or the Monoprice in-wall ones due to the concealed installation and the fact that they are new.

No worries. EBay bends over backwards to screw the seller in any dispute, so you should only be out return shipping charges if they are bogus. The rating of the seller should be your guide. Good sellers are at, or very near, 100%. Anything below 99.2% and I'd probably take a pass. In fact, if the seller is offering the new Christmas return policy, you will not even have to pay for return shipping!

FYI, in-wall speakers require in-wall speaker wire ... look for a good deal at monoprice.

In any case, enjoy your new speakers.

At 50 dollars, have you considered building your own speakers? If you are somewhat inclined, you will get far more bang for the buck.

If there is a well defined guide for a decent pair of $50 speakers and fairly easy to put together, I would take it on but I would not want to turn it into a project due to lack of time.

Did you have something specific in mind?

I don't have at this time but there are plenty of DIY projects around the internet. Consider 4" or 5" full range speakers, using wood product for cabinets. There are also kit shops on the internet where you can buy parts, unfinished cabinets and the rest of the parts.

Sometimes, you can find really nice deals on speakers at garage sales, estate sales and the like for minimal cost.
