I've got a fairly low end Onkyo TX-SR607 combined with the Polk RM510 5.1 set. It all works ok for my ears.

I wanted to add the side speakers for 7.1. Ideally, I'd like in-ceiling mounted...do those generally work ok for side speakers? With a budget of

Just to be clear you are asking about using in ceiling for the surrounds (channels 4+5) not the rear surrounds (channels 6+7)?

For the surrounds in ceilings will work just fine. There are many choices out there for fully directional in ceiling speakers, and also ones that only have directional tweeters. Placement of speakers always per the owners manual, but yes they can be in line with the primary seating position or slightly rearward of the primary seating position.

Yes, exactly...in ceiling surrounds and NOT the rears. The receiver shows 4 and 5 basically to the side, but I wanted to go in the ceiling. Thanks for the information, that helps.

Any recommendations on speaker brand\model? I've got a budget of $600 for the pair, but given the other fairly entry level speakers in my system, I'm guessing I wouldn't need the full budget?

I really appreciate any recommendations in advance. I'm planning to get in the attic while it's starting to get cool and run all my wiring so I'm wanting to get some picked out ASAP so I can get everything cut\wired\ready.

There are a lot of options out there for in ceiling speakers. Here are a couple I could recommend:

DefTech DI 8R - Two-way in ceiling speaker with 8" woofer and directional tweeter (can be aimed): http://www.definitivetech.com/products/di-8r
These are a wee bit beyond your budget, but you never know...

DefTech DI 6.5R - Same as the DI 8R but smaller with a 6.5" woofer: http://www.definitivetech.com/products/di-6-5r

GoldenEar Invisa 650: Same speaker concept as the DefTechs above, 6.5" woofer and an aimable ribbon tweeter: http://www.goldenear.com/products/invisa-series

As I said, there are a lot of options out there. If there is a speaker company you like, check out their catalog to see what they offer for in-ceiling speakers.
