Smile Dayton sub-1200 combo

Hi Guys. I have a friend who is upgrading and wants to sell his HT speakers. He has a Def Tech 800 package minus the sub (so 4 Promonitor 800's and a Procenter 1000). He offered me $600 but i think I can get it down to $500. I already have a Dayton sub-1200. Before I jump, please give me recommendations of what else can I get for $500 for speakers only (4 + 1 center), USED. I will spend extra (about $200) for a receiver, possibly a yamaha rx473.

My living room size is 15-ft by 22-ft, carpet. One side of the longer dimension is open to the kitchen. This is a condo. But I am planning to buy a house next year so want to have the system for a while.

The other advice is that do I really need towers or since I have a sub I can get by with the bookshelves?

EMP Tek E5Bi Bookshelf (renamed R5Bi): http://emptek.com/e5bi.php
Andrew Robinson review: http://hometheaterreview.com/emp-tek...aker-reviewed/

Cost = $225 / pair ($338 for 3, one being used as a center channel -- that is how I have them).

The EMP Tek E3b's are $125 / pair for your rear speakers. So now you're up to $463, which includes shipping. And these are new speakers, not used, and they may even be having a sale on black Friday.

Obviously, this won't include speaker stands, cabling and wiring.

Thanks dsrussell. The question is should I have a dedicated center channel speaker (as I frequently see the center channel accounts for 75-85% of the sounds in a movie)? Oh, I forgot to mention in my original post is that the system I am building up will be used primarily for movies.

If you'd like a dedicated center channel, the EMP Tek has the R5Ci for $195 shipped. I chose 3 identical speakers for a smooth transition and saw no need for the R5Ci (even with the R5Bi placed on its side). Whatever speaker system you decide to buy, get them from the same manufacturer so they are timbre-matched. Good hunting.

Great, I'll keep the EMP Teks in my research.

Any other suggestions?

Can you do towers up front? Is the Andrew jones series of pioneers still regarded as a good budget buy? I've liked mine.

Also look at Hsu HB-1 @ $ 368 shipped (yes, I've heard these as well when I was auditioning their subs, and liked them, but preferred the EMP Teks -- you may think different):

Another good choice would be the NHT SuperOne 2.1 and SuperCenter 2.1. These are sealed speakers a little more compact than a typical ported speaker, but they have a great warm sound and excellent detail.

Towers are okay too. I am looking at all the suggestions above right now.

I found rave reviews for Jamo S606/626 series. However, not able to find them anywhere for sale so that I can get a price idea ?

Is the Andrew Jones Pioneer this model? Pioneer SP-FS52

Polk RTi6's currently $155 shipped per pair. 2 pair would put you at $310, add a Polk CSi3 center for $105 that is a great setup for $415

Yes, that is the Pioneer model for towers and BS-22 for bookshelf.

However the Sony Core speakers are better, and on sale for a good price.

Any idea how those would compare to the R5Bi's?

I don't have personal experience with the R5Bi's. They are extremely well reviewed haven't heard any complaints about them so they much be good.

I personally am a fan of Polk sound with having alot of their products. I have RTi4's and love them. But everyone's ears have different preferences. Most the complaints I have read about Polk speakers are from their lines below the RTi and LSi series. People have said that Polk's are better suited for HT listening but I have EQ'd my Polk RTi4's and they sound great with music too

Those NHT superones seem to have rave reviews in addition to the R5Bis. If I get 4 NHT SuperOne 2.1's coupled with a SuperCneter 2.1, how would that go with a Yamaha RX473? I also have a sub Dayton 1200.

Oh, and all these I am trying to set up are primarily for movies in a 15x22-ft living room.

They would work very well, and either option is a better buy than those DefTech ProMonitors. The NHT's will offer more placement options being sealed, whereas the EMPs will need about a foot behind them for the port.

That will work fine - and is a good option.

However, due to having some nice good speakers - it would cause me to save up
for a better sub in the future.

I plan to buy an additional sub in the future

Do the bookshelves need to be put on stands? If i put them on the floor (carpeted) with slightly angled up and about 10-ft apart from each other, how is that for a setup?

I would not put them on the floor, you want the tweeters at ear-level when seated. I would recommend some speaker stands, you can get some inexpensive Sanus stands on Amazon, probably the 24" version.

Dayton sub-1200 combo

If your looking at the super ones, for the money you could do Ascend Acoustics CBM-170SE. They are currently on sale for $300/pair. The website doesn't show it, but once you order they will adjust the price. I just ordered 5 yesterday.

On stands or a shelf.

Putting them on the floor, is a waste of your money - and robing you of good sound.
