Need new bookshelf speakers

I'm not an audiophile with an ear that can hear a fly buzzing in the sound stage during a recording session :-), but I do enjoy my music and movies to sound good. I have an Sony STR-K7100 stereo that the speakers that came with it died, but the seperate sub still works just fine. Now I need new ones, since I'm temporarily using the rear surround speakers for front speakers :-(

I'm not rich so I need buy in a pair and hopefully keep the cost < $100 or the wife might blow a gasket

Listening is mostly TV/movies played thru a Roku 2, and Pandora thrown in occasionally for background music doing things around the house.

What recommendations are there that can be had locally like at a RadioShack, BestBuy, HHGREGG, or some such?

Since the Insignia bookshelf speakers only go down to around 80 Hz, you might think about adding a small subwoofer to help support the bass. Check out the Dayton SUB-800 @ $75 (Parts Express): http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...oofer--300-627

Music area: Magnepan 3.6, McIntosh MC2205 & C48, SVS SB13-Ultra, Oppo BDP 95 and assorted equipment.
Movie area: EMP Tek R5Bi, PSA XS30, Denon X2000, Oppo BDP 83.

In all honesty, if you like SONY, definitely consider the new Sony Core line. While I have not heard them, I have heard great things about them.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-cor...&skuId=5721014

Staying under $100/pr is going to be hard, but you should be able to stay near $100, or at least under $200/pr.

Several people on this forum like the Infinity Primus speakers, and they are good value -

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_108P153...imus-P153.html

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_108P163...imus-P163.html

You seem to need these for primarily a movie system, so these Polk TSi-100 should do a nice job -

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107TSI1...ck.html?tp=186

Directly from Polk Audio via their Ebay site, consider these speakers near your budget -

Polk Monitor 30 -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-M...item5406f0bf0b

Polk Monitor 40 -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-M...item5b081aae8f

Polk RTi-4 -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-R...item35d46d9165

Polk Audio RTi-6 -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-R...item5afe4d18e1

Direct from Polk Audio, NEW, full warranty.

In my opinion, you won't find anything remotely near the quality of the Polk RTi-6 for that price. The current equivalent of the RTi-6 are selling for $400/pr.

Just a few thoughts.

Even these speakers are worth considering.

Polk Monitor 50 floorstanding -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-M...item35d68fe785

They are essentially the Monitor 40's in a larger cabinet, but still very modestly priced.

Here are some choices as well.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...CE&PageSize=30

The Pioneer with the 4" woofer are an MTM config which is what I prefer. If you can swing it, move up to $120 for the Polk Monitor 40s with 5.25 woofers. The Klipschs at 100 are good too.

Thanks for the recommendation but in my OP I said that the sub that came with the system works fine still, but I will keep it in mind if the sub dies :-)

Pioneer Andrew Jones BS21 $60/pair. Ridiculous bargain.

Matching center channel is $50.

Note those are the first-gen models... if you can wait for them to go on sale, the second gen ones (BS22 and CS22 respectively for bookshelves and center) go on sale for the same price as those first gens are going for and they're even better speakers.

If you have the room for them and can stretch the budget just slightly the tower versions in this series, the FS52, are widely considered by pro reviews the best speakers you can get under $500/pair, and they're only $120 for 2 when on sale... ($129 each when not on sale).

Two BestBuy's and 2 sets of the Pioneers not being plugged in, I ended up with some PolkAudio T15's http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Boo...N%3DB002RJLHB8

For $60/pair, they sound good, fit the budget, and fit where I needed them. Put them through two movies tonight and am quite pleased.

Thanks for the suggestions people.
