LCR-DONE!...Now I need sides and rears

I'm starting to to outfit a HT slowly replacing older components. I want to to do the LCR speakers first. I have room for floorspeakers for the L/R. Eventually I will go 5.1 or Atmos. Ceiling is wired for sides and rears.

Room is 20'x26'. 9' foot ceilings

Receiver is Onkyo TX-NR636.

I have an older sub I'll use for a while. Klipsch KSW 10

LCR Floorspeakers, matching center. Budget is $1000.---DONE. Went with the EmpTeks

Now I'm looking for the sides and rears. I have to mount them on (not in) my ceiling. Budget is $1200.

I appreciate any and all advice

Dave

By matching center you mean a horizontal one? Or a matching third speaker same as left/right?

Either way the Ascend 340SE with their stands would be a good candidate http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages...m/cmt340m.html

I would look at the JBL Studio 280 speakers - sold each
http://www.amazon.com/JBL-Studio-280...JBL+STUDIO+280

The JBL Studio 235 center

A big +1 there mate! My go-to recommendation for a $1000 front end. Very tough to beat for price.

Dave, the Ascend HTM-200 SE's are the ideal surrounds to match the 340 SE's when the time comes. Your best bet is to quiz the helpful fellas on the Ascend Forum about the most suitable Atmos ceiling speakers.

I meant a horizontal one. Apologies for not being clear.

Yes, the Ascend 340 SE are a great speaker for the price.
If you want towers, the EMPtek e55ti are very good as well.

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and EMP e5Bi surrounds, Outlaw LFM1 Plus sub, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub

Wow, that was quick. What made you go EMP Tek over the Ascend Acoustics or JBLs? Anyway, congratulations. Let us know how you like them once they are setup.

Music area: Magnepan 3.6, McIntosh MC2205 & C48, SVS SB13-Ultra, Oppo BDP 95 and assorted equipment.
Movie area: EMP Tek R5Bi, PSA XS30, Denon X2000, Oppo BDP 83.

1. I'm a bit impatient.
2. I have read a lot of threads here and elsewhere and those speakers get a lot of good comments.
3. She who must be obeyed saw them and said, "get those, they match the furniture." I kid you not.

The EmpTeks are very nice looking speakers. I think you will enjoy them.

Do you know what your budget will be for the sub/when you will be able to upgrade that piece of HT?

Not sure yet. I have an old Klipsch KSW 10 that still thumps pretty good, so we'll see. What I'm looking for now is in/on ceiling rear surrounds.

Love comments 2 and 3.

Since you have read lots of threads, sound like it was not a decision done without some knowledge in your decision process.

Good on you and the one who must be obeyed
Enjoy

I would lower the budget and add some more sub budget.

With that much budget for surrounds, there is a chance the surrounds will sound better then the mains.

There's no harm is getting the matching bookshelves from EmpTek also. That will really add to your sub budget.

The matching bookshelves are a little bigger than I wanted to hang from the ceiling. I'm already going to get some grief over having them "on" and not "in".

I haven't really set a sub budget yet because I don't know if I need one. That Klipsch KSW 10 has done pretty well but if it's not up to the task, I'll pony up and get a decent one.

Thanks for all your help and your comments.

Well, you can get the E3b's by EMP Tek at $125 / pair. They are a small speaker and only come in white: http://emptek.com/e3b.php I don't have a clue of their sound, but I'd be surprised if they weren't a pretty good little speaker. But really, you can get whatever surrounds float your and your wife's boat. I wouldn't want them to sound too different, but you can always try a pair of speakers that catches your eye to see how they perform with your R55Ti's.

Also look at the Focal Sib - they come in white or black - and the stand doubles as a mounting bracket - and they
do have a 5" woofer.

I will be honest and say that I have never heard that specific model from Def Tech, but I do think the speakers from Def Tech are a little over priced compared to other bookshelves of a similar price tag.

I would also check the Pioneer BS22 modded by Dennis Murphy. It's a very compact bookshelf with it's 4" driver.
http://philharmonicaudio.com/aa.html - very budget savvy

As a side note, I think you should really get a new sub and push it's budget. A $2000 sub budget would really bring new life into your HT - especially, dual $1000 subs. It will really bring a wow factor. I think that's a good number based on your budget for your mains, as well as the money you are saving with your surrounds since you originally planned for a $1200 surround budget.

I think upgrading subs has been my most immersive and enjoyable upgrade.

Well, assuming the "She who must be obeyed" force is still in place, subwoofers can be a hard sell because the are often big ugly boxes and are LARGE! More than a few clever folks have found a way to build and end table over a sub, but man, that is a tougher sell. Unfortunately, EMP has not yet released their new Impression series sub, but when they do, it will come in the same veneer-like wraps as the speakers! Not saying it will be the best sub ever, but it will be in the same fake wood wraps as the speakers. I find my EMPtek sub (10i10i) doesn't have the depth or volume of my 12 inch Outlaw, but it is a damn good sub and very accurate. Had my late wife been involved in the decision, I would NOT own the Outlaw subwoofer, I am certain!

I felt my Outlaw lacked a natural depth and beefyness to its bass reproduction.

It's hard for us to give recommendations because we are not your WAF I wouldn't worry too much about surrounds as long as they are not Bose speakers. Some NHT classics, or the new line from Infinity will be very suitable options.

I am, however, awaiting your sub budget and ready to give some recommendations

I've got to get these surrounds bought, mounted to the ceiling and see what it sounds like with my current sub first.

So, you do not like the Focal Sib option?
