First Setup B&w 684 s2 vs 684 s1

Hey guys I'm trying to figure my first audio set up for music, mostly rock, Johnny Cash, dire straight, the Eagles, tool, rage etc.

Any who I was going to get wharfedale 10.7, but am now leaning towards b&w 684 s2, I can't listen to either the storeroom only has the b&w 684 s1 which I did quite like.

Can Anyone give me advice between the two series? I noticed whathifi rated the s1 better what are your guys opinions?
I can get the s1 cheaper
thanks!

I would at least try and listen to the S2, so you can know for sure. From what I have read the S2 series has some nice upgrades over the first generation, but I haven't been able to hear them yet.

I've been quite happy with my 684 s1's, but I agree with Transmaniacon, it would be nice to hear the s2's too. You should be getting a price break on the s1's though, which might help with the decision making process.

Yeah I think I am going to ask the store if they can get the s2 in aswell for me to listen either way I will be buying one or the other.

I get abit confused on the upgrades from s1 to s2 the s2 has smaller speakers and is 2 way compared to the s1 which has bigger speakers and is 2.5 way?
I guess bigger isn't always better though?
I assumed that bigger speaker would put out more noise?

Has anyone heard both series?

Yeah the new 684 is slimmer, the 683 is the bigger tower. You might could find a good deal on the first gen 683, which I think would be a better choice than the new 684 since it has a dedicated mid-range driver.

The S2s do sound great but you're probably going to be able to get a great a better price on the S1s if budget is an issue

Of the 2 versions which do you think sounds the best? Primary for music?
I have tag mixed reviews on the s2 that is all and unfortunately I cant listen I would rather spend the extra if the s2 is THAT much better.

the 684 S2 was a little more transparent, but the S2 severely lacks bass. The 684 S1 would be more satisfying overall to me, because it can reproduce a fuller range of frequencies. When I heard the 684 S2, they didn't play the kick drum or synthesized bass or bass guitar as well as I would have liked to play music in a 2.0 setup. If you're going to use a subwoofer to augment the low-end then the S2s more open sound might be better for you.

I have not heard the Wharfedales, so I cannot compare.

If the store can get the S2s in that would be great. The best way to decide is to hear both speakers. The 684S2 has quite a few upgrades and the tweeter is much improved IMHO. However, I agree with callas that the bass is quite lean with the S2. The S2s and a quality subwoofer would be a very nice combination.
