passive speakers question

Hi

Sorry for the basic question.

I have been given a DARE passive speaker model VS400.

From research I have figured out that I need a Speakon cable to connect to the speaker. I want to connect the speaker to my hifi (denon) AMP.

What I can't figure out is:
- Is that possible? I have read I need a power AMP. Is the denon hifi type amp ok to use in theory?( I still need to work out the watts part, but I will do that once I understand more)
- One end of the cable goes into the speaker (speakon), the other into my AMP. What's the name of this cable that I should buy?

Thanks,
Mesh

You need to either buy or make a cable with the correct Speakon at one end and the appropriate connector, or bare ends, at the other to go to your Denon.

I saw a pic of the back of that speaker and there are two speakon connectors on the back(if you have the same one). You should make sure it is not an active speaker (no crossover) before you hook it up.

Thanks

Gooddoc - you are right there are two speakon connectors on the back. But you have totally lost me when you say crossover. How can I figure out if it's active? All other active speakers images I have seen seem to have lots of other dials/switches at the back.

If you put a dmm on each one and test the ohms they will be the same if it has a crossover. If it is a different ohm reading between the two then it is an active speaker with no crossover

If it's a typical pro sound speaker they're parallel wired, for daisy chaining. You'd seldom, if ever, find dual Speakons for the purpose of bi-amping. For that use 4 pole Speakons are employed.
