Speaker Wire help

Sorry for the newb question but here it is:

I bought a house that has in-wall speakers for its home theater setup (surround). I'm assuming the in-wall speaker wire is 14 awg (or possible 12 awg)..now should I also run 12/14 awg from the wall plate to my receiver? Or would 16awg/18awg be better? Should it always match when possible? As you can tell, I'm not really speakeducated.

Thanks in advance.

14 ga covers a vast majority of circumstances.

To some extent, it depends on the wire length, but I suspect unless you have very unusual circumstances, 14ga would be fine, and is reasonably priced.

Thanks Steve.

The wire length would be about 3/4 feet from plate to receiver. Would that make a difference?

Thanks again.

No, around 50ft total per speaker is where problems begin.

Here is a chart of excepted wire lengths for various gauges and varions speaker impedance.

FYI: % Signal Loss for Speaker Wire Length

Generally, 5% loss is acceptable, but I've calculated lower percentages. It is actually quite easy to achieve low percentage of losses with common wire lengths.
