I have a surround system in a small room which is 9' x 11' with 8' ceilings.
The TV (a 42") is on one of the narrow walls.
Due to some unfortunate door placement, the only place for the front mains is either directly underneath the television, or up above the doors near the ceiling (probably mounted sideways).
What would be the preferred speaker placement in this case?
only real way to get some separation in that room is to go up high on the walls, otherwise you might as well just stick with stereo if you went underneath or straight above the tv. The speakers would be so close, it would sound like all the sound was coming from the same place anyways
I would leave it like it is. The room is only 9x11. The speakers are at ear level and level to the TV, and that will give you a convincing sound. If the TV is 36" wide, you only have 36" on each side of the TV...that would put the speakers darn near in each corner ...not where I would want them as you would be experiencing too many early reflections.
