Temporary Setup

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a temporary setup until my new home is complete. I just recently bought a 55JS8500 TV ($1,100 from Amazon!!) and now need some audio to accompany it. The TV will ultimately be moved into my bedroom, but for now, it's in a studio apartment, which is roughly 900 square feet with an attached kitchen (Open Layout).

I do not want to spend an arm and a leg on this since it will ultimately be moved into my bedroom.

I'm thinking about getting the "Yamaha RX-V677" since I can scoop one up for $290ish. Also, I know the Pioneer AJ's don't get much love, but the center channel (SP-C22) is $60 on Amazon. Personally, I like good quality stuff, but I'm a bit lost when it comes to audio equipment. Any recommendations on a 2.1 system? Or, could I do two front speakers, a center and a sub? It'll be primarily used for movies, and because I live in the city, I do not need anything too powerful. Price wise, I'd like to stay under $500 for speakers and a sub. Again, this is temporary and will be moved into a bedroom. I don't necessarily need surround sound; I'm simply looking for better audio than what the TV can provide. If you guys are so kind to provide any recommendations, I'll seek them out locally so I can listen to them first in order to make an educated decision.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly I would recommend just going with a pair of bookshelves. A sub that can handle that size space is going to be expensive and probably end up annoying your neighbors anyway. $500 gets you a great pair of bookshelves, and they will be vastly superior to the TV speakers. Speakers that image well can create a nice phantom center effect.

The Elac Uni-fi UB5 would be my recommendation, they are the new mid-range Elac series designed by Andrew Jones, and by all accounts sound fantastic. Here is a good review of them, they release later this month IIRC, but would be well worth the wait. I have a feeling these are going to be the new heavy-hitters in this price range.

I would put most of your money towards a good pair of bookshelves. Consider Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 SE or HSU HB-1 MK2. I'm sure other people will have additional suggestions in that price range.

Then this Monoprice subwoofer recently won a budget subwoofer shootout

The Klipsch Sub-12HG has been below $200 recently. That could be another good choice.

Or skip the sub all together for now and get in on this deal at Massdrop for these Chane towers speakers.

I just realized you have a 4K TV, so you will need to step up to one of the newer receivers with full HDCP 2.2 support. The RX-V679 is the newer version that will fully support your TV and future 4K player. You can get it factory refurbished from www.accessories4less.com for $350. Yamaha is a good choice and generally regarded as the best in terms of reliability.

I like Denon better for the Audyssey room EQ, the X1200 would be a comparable choice here.

Right. Get the lowest end Denon model that has Audyssey MultEQ and the features you want, and put all the rest towards the speakers (and possibly sub). That's where you'll get the most SQ for the money.

Accessories4less has the S720W for $229: AVR-S700W 7.2-Ch x 75 Watts Networking A/V Receiver
