get my wife off my back please

Installing surround sound for the first time in a living room about 22x15 and open on the sides to other rooms.
Need 5.1 speakers to go with a Denon AVR X2200W 7.2 and Vizio 70' (4k/HDR)
Wife said the speakers have to be white. I really do not want in-wall if I can help it.
I really do like the HSU-HB1-MK2s, and really want to pull the trigger on that value 5.1 set, but they don't come in white.
Does anyone know of a 5.1 set that comes with bookshelves in white? sub and center don't have to be white. (sub behind couch out of sight, center mostly obscured by tv, i know, not ideal)
Watch tv most of the time 70%, movies 25%, music 5%, something like that.
Sure I could paint the HSUs, but that would prob look like crap.
thanks.

Why does it matter having white bookshelves? I can understand white wall mount satellites. But bookshelves?

You could try the Wharfedale Diamond 220 which does come in white:
http://www.musicdirect.com/p-281485-...-speakers.aspx
As does its matching center:
http://www.musicdirect.com/p-281503-...l-speaker.aspx

If she can live with a black grille, the JBL Arena 120 is otherwise white:
https://www.amazon.com/JBL-Arena-120...rena+120+white

I hope she doesn't demand a white subwoofer too, sheesh.

~ HT ain't rocket science. Most just want clear dialogue out of the center (70-80% of output), boom-boom from the sub, enough detail/dynamics from the front L/R...maybe $100-300 per speaker, $30-$60 per surround. There is a vocal minority that derives great pride & pleasure from blowing far more $$$ for perhaps an extra 5-10% improvement...well, this is good for the economy. Figure out which camp you are in, and proceed accordingly. ;)

SVS sats and bookshelves come in a very nice white, IIRC.

FWIW, I gave up every room in the house in exchange for a build-it-my-way HT room, I told her she can tell her friends a man needs at least one room that doesn't match to feel like its a "home," and that she conned me out of the rest of the house. Its going to be a velvet black, no frills home for giant, ugly speakers and subs.

Just in case you haven't ordered the SVS speakers yet---or even if you have since hell, they have free return shipping---I forgot to mention these:

https://www.amazon.com/NHT-Classic-B.../dp/B000CDUC8U
Pro review here:
http://www.goodsound.com/equipment/n...ic_two_ten.htm

These DO have white grilles, so your wife has no further cause for complaint other than the fact that they are normal BOOKSHELF speakers not little SATELLITE speakers like the SVS---what that means is that you will get a much fuller and richer sound out of them, especially during any music listening. NHT is also known for excellent midrange meaning excellent voice clarity which you'll appreciate during TV and movies---you won't have to constantly turn up the volume just to understand the dialogue.

Here's a pic of them with white grilles on:
http://www.terapeak.com/worth/nht-cl.../141831561727/

If she puts up a fuss I'd offer her a compromise: you can order 3 of the NHTs for the critical front stage, and keep 2 of the SVS sats for the surrounds.

You can diy speakers and have more choices and fantastic WAF approved finish of any color/texture applied (maybe not by you, there are guys who paint for a living)....just a thought. You can also change (or have changed) the fabric of a grill easily enough.

Q Acoustics speakers are available in White

Hello Sasfood

There are forum rules regarding 'self promotion'; so we don't know whether or not we're allowed to point out that Q Acoustics speakers are now available in the US and come in a variety of finishes, including 'gloss white'. They can be viewed via our qacoustics.com website.

Best regards

You could still do those HSU's if you really wanted them. Buy some white gloss vinyl wrap and take them to a local sign shop that wraps cars. They can get them looking very professional and would likely charge you less than $200 for all 5 speakers. They also sell white speaker cloth so it'd be easy to change out the grills as well. It'd be even cheaper if you were willing to wrap the speakers yourself.

My setup: Sonus Faber Venere 2.5 and center, Ascend HTM200SE surround, dual Rythmik L12's, Pioneer SC-95, Samsung PN60F8500

Women love white for some reason?

They will paint over a perfectly nice wood kitchen in white paint that will only look good for a couple months before it starts to show cooking film, stains ect... I don't get it.

I was really afraid the "Piano white" finish on TV's would take off & become a trend.

Obsession with cleanliness and the "purity" it symbolizes to many people. It's a uniquely female pathology, but fairly common around the world. Women do tend to be more fastidious, like cats who are constantly cleaning themselves.

I thought White was so "1995!"

When I built my house in 1993, I had my female friends "help" me with the design, and of course, they all picked white carpet, white counters, white, paint, etc.

I hated all that white!

I re-did everything in 2012, and discovered that "white" is not the "in" color anymore!

But, as they say, "Happy Wife, Happy Life!".

OK, back to business.

Two suggestions (OK, I am sure that there are more, but I know of two):

Axiom Audio
http://www.axiomaudio.com/

LOTS of options for customizing your finish, looking for two minutes, Axiom has:
Eggshell White Vinyl (with optional "Eggshell white" speaker grills!)
Real Wood Finish, choose your stain (Maple in natural or "White washed" stain looks nice, but you have 6 woods and 6 stain options.
Solid High Gloss White Piano Finish
and
"match your walls".

I have had my Axiom's since about 2003 or so, and have been very happy with them. People are very nice, and support their products. My "puppy at the time", damaged all my speaker cones, and they sold me replacement drivers at very affordable prices.

Some nice custom finishes for relatively affordable, well built, "high quality" speakers!

Another option is:

http://www.salksound.com/
I am sure that Jim Salk can do whatever your wife would want.

Maybe sit down with your wife and show her the custom finishes for the Salk Speakers. She might let you "blow the budget" for that "High Gloss Electric Blue" real wood finish!

Buy whatever speakers you want and take them to a car shop that does wraps - they will make them while in no time.

Or you could simply get a divorce!

Although I painted my entire place in antique White, I painstakiningly installed Oak baseboard moldings, along with stripping the finish off the kitchen cabinets & then giving them a hand rubbed oil finish, I know eventually some woman will end up in there, get bored one day & paint it all white again.

The white washed would be a nice alternative to hide inperfections, but then again, I'm still enarmoured with This End Up Furniture, so what do I know about "home fashions".

I would hate to be in this situation. I like to wear the pants in the relationship lol but I do compromise!

I always pick my top three choices and she picks which one she thinks is prettiest so we all win.

Sometimes I make her pay for some of it if she feels so strongly about that choice. Win win
