To the point I would like to know if it is feasable to mix Primus p150 just as rears, and Focals for the fronts. Also what would a decent sub upgrade be from a PS-12 sub in the $400-$500 range. (See below for details plz).
So I am upgrading my speakers from Infinity Primus P150 and the center C25 to Focal Chorus 706 for L/R and the Focal CC700 for the center channel.
I listened to both Focal and B&W, while B&W 885 seemed warm, it lacked clarity if that makes sense.
They will be ran through a Denon 2312ci receiver.
I know that it is a huge no no to mix fronts, which I'm not, but what about the rears. If that it's bad I might as well bite the bullet and get the Chorus 705's for the rear.
My fronts are Ushers, my rears are B&Ws, works just fine.
You should have no issues; Audyssey or similar EQ tweaks frequency response for all 5 speakers to match their algorithms which should result in even a "way off" combo sound far better than they would together without EQ.
cbaker89, can you increase your budget at all for the sub. Without looking into the specs of that particular sub, why not get another PS-12 sub or something close to it? Otherwise maybe going to a 15 inch sub then. How big is your room? Is it sealed or open up to other areas? Maybe just another 12 inch ported sub?
I have old klipsch towers for rears and its fine for my 5.1 with movies. I will say Im not a big critic for home movie sound, but never had anyone that has listened to a movie in my home question the sound. dont really listen to multi channel music either, maybe then it would be a concern.
The surrounds only produce ambient sounds and background music which account to 10-15% of the movie. Go ahead, use P150's as surrounds and don't lose any sleep over it.
The specs on your sub are decent. Adding a 2nd sub such as an SVS SB12-NSD for $399 would help smooth out the bass across the entire room. If your room is on the larger side, you may need something larger. https://www.amazon.com/SVS-SB12-NSD...8&qid=1486850270&sr=8-1&keywords=svs+sb12-nsd

Unless you listen to a lot of native-surround music (SACD and DVD-A), it would be a crying shame to use a nice speaker like the Chorus 705 as a surround, esp. when the considerable extra expense could be much better spent on upgrading your subwoofer.
For HT, yes the P150 will be fine as surrounds.
In the $400-500 range I'd look at the EMPTek I-12 ($409 shipped b-stock) and the SVS PB1000 ($450-475 shipped b-stock).
As for mixing the fronts, that is a big taboo around here...but as is true of many taboos, holds little water in real life experience.
If you have the budget for the CC700 and are happy with its voice clarity (I'd keep the sales receipt just in case), then by all means go for it; if not, be aware that there are far, far worse things in life than having a (gasp!) mis-matched center...having the holiest-of-the-holy "timbre match" up front but not being able to understand wtf the actors are saying during movies, would certainly be one of those things.
(PS. This is not to say that there's anything wrong with the CC700, since I've never heard it myself. But some manufacturers just don't put much thought or effort into their "matching" centers since they correctly assume that most consumers will blindly follow the popular advice and salespeople's persuasion to "match" the front stage. Hopefully Focal isn't one of them...I've liked the Focals I heard before but those were only fronts not centers.)
Thank you all for the replies, you set my mind at ease. My room size is 20x15, the sub seems to handle just kinda wanted to see if there is something out there that might be a little "punchier" (yes I create my own dialect of English. I will get hooking up the new speaker system at the end of the month. I will definitely let you guys know the results.
Again, thanks all that replied and if someone else has any other insight I am more than open to it.
P.S. One thing I did learn from all this, I love dealing with a local store rather than online, not only cheaper (tax being a factor as well), I like their input on things and the fact I can touch, feel, and hear the equipment.
Sorry for the confusion. Even when paying sales tax, it was still cheaper than online stores that don't charge tax or shipping. Plus get the personal service from a sales person.
