Just got a killer deal on JBL Studio 580s, critique my setup!

I had an opportunity to purchase two JBL 580s that I couldn't pass up. Though I'm really excited for these to arrive in a few days, I'm a little concerned that my surround system is a bit out of balance. I'm going to list my system below and hope you pros can help give some feedback as to what I may benefit to change. I currently have the system in a smallish living room, but hope to transition it to a larger room down the line. I listen to mp3 audio, will be getting a turntable soon (Audio Technica LP120), and watch movies with DTS TrueHD/Dolby Audio streams. I don't necessarily have a set budget, but basically want to upgrade the rest of the system to match the floor standing speakers if necessary over time. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

I'd replace that C22 center pronto. JBL Studio 230C or, if you are willing to ignore the "timbre matching or death" advocates, Chane A2.4 for the center.

Rears you can eventually replace with the JBL B17 from Amazon for $150/pair.

But the center is going to be the huge weak link when watching movies.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

Those are great fronts. I'd say the center channel would be your first priority. You'd be better off getting the JBL 235C center channel. I own it and absolutely love the sound. Keep the surrounds for now. You can upgrade those later on.

surrounds dony matter much but you will do yourself a disservice keeping that center with your new LR speakers

As others have stated jump on the Studio 235 center -- the 520 center is still out of stock

For surrounds -- the Studio 220 or Studio 210 -- if budget is tight, then the Arena B15

Am I missing something about the JBL 580s?

I'm showing $800 per speaker??? What is the normal price? $2,000?

Amazon had them at $259/tower, starting late yesterday (or sometime yesterday). I think they sold out a short while ago.

As with everyone else, the JBL 235 would be what I recommend for the OP. If his AVR can manage it, he could move the C22 to surround duty in 6.1 if he wants.

All fulfilled by amazon, so should be good. Probably amazon just unloading inventory or some weirdness like that.

Sub needs upgrading, but I'd say get that center while it's still on sale.

Emotiva BasX is the common budget sub recommendation here.

Oy, that's second on the upgrade path, way way ahead of the surrounds.

Emotiva S12 at minimum.

Well, if you just can't do $400, Amazon has the JBL sub ( 50lbs, 300 watts, claimed 27Hz extension, 10" driver, sealed cabinet) for half of that:
https://www.amazon.com/JBL-Studio-55.../dp/B0071UQ8FS

Wonder how it compares to the Emotiva S8 sub at the same price.

The JBL website carries the 550P for triple that.

I wouldn't buy the Studio 230c. The Studio 5 series use a compression driver while the 2 series uses a standard dome. This will not be a family match. I would wait for the 520c to come back in stock.

yeah, the weight factor favors JBL.

However, JBL doesn't have a great track record of making good subs. My first sub was a JBL, claimed MSRP was $300 and got it half off but brand new from eBay. All but useless except for music in a small room. It also claimed to go down to 25Hz when I think the real number was probably more like 35-40Hz.

I added 3 of these to my cart even though I have no need for them, no where to put them, and piles of extra speakers laying around. I had to call my sponsor and take three deep breaths just to keep from hitting the "check out" button.
