What is the best value in speakers right now?

Looks/brand doesn't matter, all that's important is sound quality. Lets say usage is 70/30 HT/music. And will be used with a sub so need not be full range.

I know this is completely subjective, unless you care about measurements which not every speaker has anyway, but just wanted to see what the consensus is of the best value at multiple price points - under $200, $500, $1K and $2K.

Best value would be close-out prices on discontinued lines, re-certified or open box. Some internet direct brands (Emotiva, HSU, Ascend, Chane among others) have good quality products at very reasonable prices.

On the cheap side of things, probably Sony Cores ... $118 new, $106 (like new, meaning probably new w/ damaged packaging)

Well, I'd add "...IF you get lucky" to that.

Once scored a pair of Paradigm Studio 60 off a guy for just $210, for some reason he thought it was a Paradigm Monitor despite the sticker on the back. I will probably burn in hell for that one, lol.

Under $200 total or per speaker?

Under $600, (3x$200)=Q Acoustics, HSU RSL and Chane at msrp.

Under $1500 Klipsch RP, Chane towers, HSU or JBL at msrp.

Under $3000 PSA at msrp.

Under $6000 PSA and JTR.

I'm sure there will be other valid choices submitted by others.

Generally the NAME brands like Martin Logan, KEF, B&W and others lose due to the ridiculous prices they charge for center channel speakers.

Under 200, yeah I'd guess cores. Philharmonic aam for 210

300 lots of good options....chane, q acoustics 3020, nht super ones (I think sound better than chanes), kef q300 (I think sound better than nht.)
Emotiva airmotiv b1

Under 500 ....nothing I know of at this range better than the ones in the 300 range. Can probably find some b&w cm1 around this on closeout.

Under 1k ascend sierra 1, mini philharmonitor, svs ultra

Under 2k ascend sierra 2, bmr philharmonitor

That would be my list.

$500-600 range, I'd put in the Ascend 340SE and Chane A2.4 though the latter is sold out for god knows how long.

if you compared speakers like watches...timex vs rolex...I wonder if op is asking what the timex speaker equivalent? value is hard to describe as it may be different for everyone. I think klipsch can be a good value. Focal was a bit of a stretch but I needed something that wouldnt cause me always wanting more/better...so I feel focal had some value...they sound really good in my home.

Not your fault the guy was giving you a great deal. ... people too many times try to sell 15 y.o. junk at 75% of retail ... especially with electronics. ..i have seen 15 y.o.receivers offered at 50% retail .. with inflated claims of price when new...can you imagine someone trying to sell a 2005 avr for$ 200?...it doesn't matter how much it cost back then it's worth about $50 if working now...

Measurements do not tell the whole story -- it is not all about what the eye and mind reads -- it is the overall performance of a speaker in your set-up.

I think the Infiniti P363, now discontinued, would be in this list, maybe even in the under 1K category, even though it was on sale for $100.

Last year this thread was very popular - Behringer Eurolive B215XL 15" 2-Way as L/R Mains, based on this I actually bought the 12" version. But there's been no talk since.

Are there any other similar products that are a 'hidden gem'.

Many competent, technical guys who built their own best in class HT's that I've visited/auditioned use DIYSG, at least for all the surrounds (Side, rear, celing Atmos)

http://www.diysoundgroup.com/coaxial-speaker-kits.html

Many also use DIYSG mains like the Titans (too big for me) but there are many other options there.

As for branded new or used, I like PSB, B&W, Canton, Boston Acoustics and Cambridge Audio.

Lots of used speakers 2-3 models old on ebay, craigslist or various 2ch/HT boards around the net.

If you are patient, lots of great quality used Canton's, PSB's, Boston and Cambridge for great prices on ebay. B&W fans tend to keep those prices high.

One strategy is to get branded prebuilt speakers for L-C-R (I treated myself to a pair of PSB T2's with matching PSB center, wanting no compromise 2ch music quality), then do DIYSG Volts for all surrounds/Atmos and maybe subs if you have the time/skill to build subs. Lots of great assembled, branded sub options like HSU and other 'net brands.

I think it is more about patience and waiting until you find a good deal. Used gear is generally priced better than new gear, as people get upgradeitis.

Not in the States though I understand in the Orient at least Yamaha offers some very nice speakers but they wouldn't fall into the "value" category.

In the States "value" generally, (but not always...especially when name brands are deeply discounted prior to an upgrade), means Internet Direct only or Do It Yourself such as through kits available from Parts Express and others.

Unlike the rest of the world here we also have "value" subwoofers at our disposal.

I tend to prefer speakers that are not a good value. To my ears, they are typically better speakers.

PBS Imagine T
Monitor Audio Silver 8
Salk Song Tower qwts dome tweeter
Ascend Sierra dome tweeter
B&W 700 Series
Revel F36

All of these have a high wife factor. Mabey not the Tritons. If looks aren't a big factor then some guys did a shootout where the Chane tower A5 I think ,beat out the Martin Logan. If so that's a 1000 buck a pair speaker. Of these speakers I have Owned a older RX version of the Monitor Audio, also own some Wharfedale 220s a step down the line from the Reva series.I just bought the Revel F 36, got a good deal on some showroom demos. I had heard the Tritons, and Martin Logan,s a while back. I think for bang for your buck The Wharfedale 200 series or mabey the new 11 series if you like a warm musical speaker. They will be in the 1000 buck range. Not trying to be a fan boy but the RevalF36 is I think outstanding.I am very happy with them , no buyers remorse.
