By far the biggest improvement in sound quality/fidelity, is a result in a cleaner amp with more power. It's all about the quality of components and headroom! I have what I would consider rather decent mid-fi speakers and when I added an Anthem A5, even though using the Integra DTR-50.3 as my pre, the sound quality, cleanliness, imaging, openness, and more just seemed to open up like breathing fresh air for the first time without restrictions. In a word, "nirvana"!
Every component in the chain from the source (CD, radio, digital storage, tape, vinyl, etc...) to the interconnects, pre, amp, speaker wire, speakers, room treatment, and good clean ears, all contribute to the quality of sound. By far the biggest change I have experienced has been the amp. One day I will experiment with room treatment. It's just that room treatment isn't as glamorous or fun as new components!
