AVRs aren't powerful enough for most passive subs (nor would the bass management work), but if you're using an active sub, the pre-out on the avr only needs to supply enough voltage for the sub's amp, not an issue for most active subs/avrs.

I'm so tempted to get a pair of the Sierra 1 b-stock as well. I love to listen to high quality music. Maybe now is not the right time. Or maybe it is. Ha!

Since you are in CA maybe its worth driving down to San Clemente and auditioning the Sierras and 340s and 170s at Dave's Ascend Factory.
Make a decision on the spot and drive home with your goodies! Save on shipping as well.

Agreed. I have three Sierra 2s at the front of my theater and couldn't be happier with them for movies or music. Definitely recommended.

Incidentally for the MD people, I'm about 10 min west of Elliott city. Small world!

I went with a vertical setup so I cannot comment on any of that off-axis mess. I never experienced it in a real life scenario with other speakers. On paper it could be a problem, but never in real life heard it.

When ordering you should speak to someone and let them know the orientation of the center. If you change from vertical to horizontal after ordering you will need to rotate the tweeter. There is plenty of info on their site and their forms.

It was asked earlier, about the quality of Customer Service. I found them to be outstanding. They made my purchase very easy. I had one issue and it was taken care of it right away and I have been very happy with my speakers.

I had a 340SE center for years and it was a very good center channel. I had center speakers with lobing issues before and the 340SE center did not have the same issues in my room. If you order the 340SE as a center it will have the EXBAC circuit switched on...which is designed to improve performance when used horizontally. Here's a post from Dave F on EXBAC:

hmm oddly, when I ordered my 200s they said that tweeter rotation was not necessary.

There is no need to rotate the tweeter in the CMT-340SE. That was true with the older "classic" CMT-340 (no SE).

I Have 340s across the front and 170s rear with 2 Klipsh RW12 subs.
I also bought B stock, dont remember which was the B stock but I can tell you that there was not one mark or blemish. I use this setup for tv, music, movies and xbox in quite a big area and have never been unhappy about my puchase. Have turned the volume past 0 and never heard any harsh noises nor did they struggle.

Panasonic TC-P65VT50
Denon 2113ci
Panasonic DMP-BDT220P
Ascend CMT-340SE L/R
Ascend CMT-340SE Center
Ascend CBM-170SE Surrounds

But shouldnt EXBAC be switched off if using a 340 vertically for center channel?

Yes, and if it is placed in a way there is not an extended front baffle.

You should call/email Ascend if you have questions about it.

No extended front baffle in my case so I should probably turn it off. But it sounds fine to me so I wont bother.

Today I went and listened to the Sonus Faber Chameleon's at Magnolia best Buy and really liked them. It was one of the first silk dome tweeters I had listened to in person. I'm now thinking that may be my preference in sound. Wondering if I like the Chameleon's if I may like the Sierra 1 or the NRT version. Anyone happened to have heard both or would you think they'd be comparable at all?
Thanks

My setup: Sonus Faber Venere 2.5 and center, Ascend HTM200SE surround, NHT atmos minis, dual Rythmik L12's, Pioneer SC-95, Minidsp DDRC-88BM, Rotel RMB1077, Samsung PN60F8500

Upgrade from Polk Monitor 70s/CS2?

Hey all...I'm checking out the CMT-340SE's (mains and center) to replace my Polk Monitor 70's (ver. 1) and CS2. Has anyone made a similar move that can tell me what would be the differences? Also, I have Monitor 30's in the rear and an Outlaw LFM-1 Plus that I plan on keeping in the mix. Any issues there? Thanks.

I don't have an experience with *these* Polk, but do run a CMT-340SE-based home theater system. Given the price of the Polks you mention, my (hopefully) educated guess says the CMT-340SE will be a huge upgrade in sound quality. I'd recommend having HTM-200 for rear surround duty to complete the setup. Can you make accurate predictions based on price alone? No. But considering Ascend has eliminated the distribution chain, their speakers' provide significant value dollar per dollar when compared with the Polks.

My current setup is CMT-340SE for LCR, HTM-200 for surrounds, and SVS SB12-NSD sub. I went through Klipsch Ref Premiere and SVS Prime, before settling on the Ascends in the last six months. I am extremely pleased with the sound!

Anyone mount their HTM-200 SE horizontally on the wall? Thinking of using these as atmos height speakers.

I'm have two sets coming Tuesday and will be mounting them in the ceiling for Atmos. I can post some pictures when I'm done if you want.

Mine are mounted vertically but I dont see any problem with mounting them horizontally. People have used the 200 horizontally as a center channel.

If you do mount the speakers close to the ceiling Ascend recommends the tweeter to be on the bottom. Other than that there should be no issues.
Due to placement constraints I have my rears horizontal and cannot tell any difference compared to my side channels which are vertical.

Beautiful looking system! What are those speaker stands? Looks a lot nicer than the cheapo Sanus MDF stands I had back when I had the 340s.

Am curious, how would you compare the sound of the SVS Prime and the Ascends? (Feel free to PM me if you don't wish to hurt any SVS owners' feelings, heh.)

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

These are Ultimate Support JSMS70 and are indeed very stable and sturdy.

I had a chance to A/B compare SVS Prime bookshelf with Ascend CMT-340 SE, and the Ascends had crisp and well-defined highs, better instrument separation, better airiness, incredible 3D soundstage and overall pleasant sounding than the SVS Prime bookshelf. The SVS sounded muddy with recessed highs. So I decided to go along with the Ascends... Being a highly subjective opinion, I doubt if anybody's feelings would be hurt.

I would say close to half of our HTM-200 customers are mounting them horizontally. Here is a link to the brackets that are ideal for this: http://www.cotytech.com/content-prod...t_sp_os08.html

hope this helps!
