I ordered a few speakers from Vanns . I believe I paid 8 bucks at the Kinek point and then just paid the provincial sales tax at the border.

We're a handful here having done business with Vann's via a Kinek point delivery. Everybody were satisfied. What you need to know:

- Vann's won't accept canadian credit cards. Thus it's way easier to go through Amazon.com.

- Chose a Kinek point as close to your home as possible (of course) but keep in mind that each point has its own fees and opening hours -- some aren't even open during the weekend, so it's important to plan your trip accordingly. Typically they charge 5-10$ per package depending on weight.

- The worst outcome would be a damaged package. You should then inspect the content at the Kinek point and if the speakers are damaged, arrange for a return with Vann's and the Kinek point. It's never happened to anybody in this thread to my knowledge but with Veritas V-S this would be highly improbable (compared to, say, with RC-70s).

- Finally when you come back to Canada you simply declare what you bought, and then you're redirected to the payment point where you'll pay the taxes in the province you're going (thus HST in Ontario). For Energy speakers nobody was charged the 6% duty that should be charged for imports of good manufactured outside North America.

I want a noticeble improvement to the sound quality.
I'm considering a Energy RCLCR center and either 4 RC-10s or maybe 2 RC-70s and just keep using the take 5's as surrounds? With a Bic America F12 sub?

Any help and suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I think my vote would be for
a pair of RC-70s, $900 on sale?
A 12" ID sub, such as HSU VTF-2 Mk4, about $600 shipped, (also see Epic and Rhythmic)

Keep the takes for now, and eventually get some other rears.

Dang, we need room in the budget for the center. And that's kinda the heart of a HT setup, along with the sub.

The F12 has had some nice reviews but doesn't seem to compare with the $500-600 ID subs musically speaking. Not bad, just not as good. Would be a good choice if looking for good, but short of excellent on the music side.

Note that my info is based on reading reviews, I don't have personal experience with the RC-10s, or F12, but I DO like the RC-70s a lot. I'm interested in other responses, too.

But you could wait on the RC-70s. Start with a pair of RC-10s, an RC-LCR, and the HSU VTF-2 MK4. Then save for the RC-70s and move the RC-10s to surround duty once you get them. I think this is the way to maximize improvement with your budget at the start.

Hmm the canadian credit card is a problem as I was looking at the Veritas VSB at Vanns for 199$ instead of 599$ here in Canada. They do have them at amazon but through Vanns are they going to take the Canadian credit card ?

I have a question about the warranty on Energy speakers. I am planning on buying a pair of RC10's. At Vanns, I can get them for $300 shipped. On ebay, I can pick them up for $250 shipped.

Will the Energy warranty be void if I pick them up on Ebay? $300 is still a good value I believe for the RC10's, but $250 sounds even better.

There will be no warranty if you get them off of Ebay. Call Vanns and tell them you saw the 10's on sale a few weeks ago for $249. They didn't honor that price for me but they did lower the price Vanns is a great company and very easy to do business with. I received my 10's in about 3 days and I'm in NY.

Warranties are non-transferable so if you're buying them from a private seller, no, there will not be a warranty. Stores like Vanns have eBay and Amazon stores that still offer the warranty. Check to see which store is selling it.

For those looking into getting Energy speakers, or upgrading their current Energy setup, here are some reviews I've written that may help:http://www.tempestaudio.blogspot.com  (haven't updated in a while, but include Energy Take Classic 5.1, RC-10, CF-70, and CC-10)

You can just order through Amazon.com, or I guess you could also order through Vann's and pay using Amazon Payments. Amazon.com accepts canadian cards and let you register multiple delivery adresses if you want.

And yes you likely won't find anything cheaper. Note that the price is for a single V-S though.

Did Vanns ship the speakers to Canada or only to a U.S. address?

Vanns doesn't ship to Canada, hence the reason we were discussing using a Kinek point on the previous page.

Let your sub do what it's best at and that also frees up more power for your AVR to put to the 70's in the frequency range it's best at. I personally have mine set at 60 because I have a bass null from my sub at 80 but I want my sub to handle the low end as much as possible. As good as the 70 is down low your sub was designed specifically for that.

Yes, but running them LARGE will even out the room's response in the low end. i run mine full range with a sub.

That would be a "your mileage may vary" type of proposition I guess. If you have a MultEQ XT32-capable receiver, maybe it's worth a try. But if you don't have any sub EQ you'll end up with twice the bass in the range where the RC-70s and the sub overlap. If you then adjust only the overall sub volume, you'll end up with either too much mid-bass if you want enough low bass, or too little low bass if you want to get just the right amount of mid-bass.

Hello,

I have four RC10s as surround and rear speakers. My room is very large, 940 square feet. I have the RC10s ceiling mounted, using Omnimount 20s. They sound great. They just look a little too large hanging on the ceiling.

Because of the size of my room, I can't wall mount them, and speaker stands wouldn't work. Today at Future Shop I saw three RC8Cs in ceiling speakers.

I am thinking about buying the apparently three last ones in Canada, and trying to pick up one more in the U.S.

What do you think of using the RC8Cs instead of the RC10s for surround/rear speakers ?

Any AVS forum members interested in doing me a solid and buying an RC8C and shipping it on to Canada ?

Any AVS forum members in Western Canada interested in checking to see if a Future Shop out west might have one last RC8C ?

Thank you.

Brian

Where can I buy one of those metal strips used to connect the dual binding posts on the RC-30's? I let my dad use my speakers and the geezer not only managed to lose the strip but also two of the terminal screws. Now the speakers are not functioning properly and I had to borrow the metal strip from my RC-10s.

I would think you can get a part like that from Energy still. Call them.... otherwise a good piece of wire connected between the terminals will work just fine also..

I assume since you say "reference" speaker you mean the RC-LCR? Or do you mean the Take LCR? I can not speak for the quality of the Take version, but 3 RC-LCRs for the front would be excellent! Highly recommended....

I never saw RC8Cs at FutureShop... Next time I go I'll try to ask but I didn't know they even sold those.

Also FutureShop sells Energy car speakers. I guess it's a totally different brand? Still the ENC12B subwoofer lists "ribbed elliptical surround" as a feature...

The RC6 in-walls and RC-8C in-ceiling have really good reputation in this thread. I guess they would be great repleacements for RC-10s. I'm just unsure how they would do as surrounds. I think someone just installed RC-8C surrounds and RC-6W front heights...

3 RC-LCR on the front would be excellent with a full 3-way, timbre-matched front stage and excellent dispersion. But somehow most people rather go for the lower-budget option of a single RC-LCR center and RC-10 bookshelves or the higher-budget option of a single RC-LCR center and RC towers.

Went on a overnight trip to the US and on the way back I picked up my (2) VS Surrounds from the Kinek Point near Niagara Falls. I declared the $298.00 I paid to Vann's and either I got a generous Border guard or it's because I was in the States for more than 24 hours but they didn't even charge me the Provincial Taxes. So I've done the Kinek Point twice now with no issues and would do it again without hesitation.

Anyway, anyone thinking about Surrounds need to get a pair of these, they sound amazing and really immerse you into the action.

Thank you for the link. I guess I will stick to having the larger items shipped to Chicago and the smaller items to SFO.

Just use a small piece of speakers wire. That's what I do....works like a charm.

So I've done the Kinek Point twice now with no issues and would do it again without hesitation.

Anyway, anyone thinking about Surrounds need to get a pair of these, they sound amazing and really immerse you into the action.

How did you get the VS for $298? I see them on the website for $200 each. Did you have to call in? I'm interested in replacing my Mirage OMD5 with the VS.

How about the PB12-nsd from sonicboomaudio.com in Markham? I got this sub a couple of weeks ago and it's great. It has a 5 year warranty that is handled by Sonic Boom as they are an authorized SVS dealer.

That's a very highly regarded sub, and should be quite nice for both HT and music even in fairly decent sized rooms. How big is the room?
