You're in Portland so you have Fry's close by. Have you gone inside just to check on RC-10 pricing? My store has had the RC-10's priced at $229/pr for quite some time.

I hadn't gone in person but that store is literally right around the corner from my house. Off I go.

Show them the photo if you have to. There was no expiration date on price tag.

Good luck!

Thanks Batpig, I will check out those KEF speakers.

Thanks mmbuckwa, I really do not want to spend that much. If I am going to, I would probably go with new SVS speakers. I do appreciate the offer though.

Their "foot" is highly adjustable and can be either a stand or a wall mount so very versatile to aim.

KEF rates them to handle a lot of power with Max SPL around 105db so they shouldn't blow when used as heights. You can probably find a pair on eBay for $100 give or take. Just make sure not to get the smaller 1000 series eggs with the 3" woofer, the larger ones have 4.5" woofer like the RC Mini or C50s you had.
What's the model number? I just found quite a few "egg" models when I searched. Thx

It's a little confusing because sometimes people refer to them with the model number for the system vs. the speaker. So in order to really scour the used market you have to look for both.

From what I can tell the systems have a "KHT" prefix (I'm assuming it loosely stands for "KEF Home Theater"), whereas the satellites have an "HTS" designation (I'm assuming "Home Theater Satellite"). So, for example, the set I got was the KEF KHT 2005.2 set (the ".2" means it was the second generation of the KHT 2005 set) and the satellites are the HTS 2001.2.

KHT is pretty cool among speaker brand in having a thorough "historical museum" section of their website where they detail past models: http://www.kef.com/html/us/explore/a...00s/index.html

Looking back it appears:

- The original KHT 2005 set was released in 2000 (satellites = HTS 2001). They were replaced in 2005 with the v2 setup (KHT 2005.2 system and HTS 2001.2 satellites) which is what I have. They are either silver or black from what I can tell, and they have a non-removable metal mesh grill over the Uni-Q driver array and a bass reflex port on the front.

- The third gen had a name changed to the KHT 3005 system, with the satellites designated HTS 3001. It looks to be slightly larger and more robust drivers (max SPL up from 104dB to 108dB). They can be recongized visually by the removable grill that covers the entire front baffle and the ribbed "spokes" on the woofer. At some point they upgraded to an "SE" version which can be identified by the "tangerine waveguide" on the tweeter. (see photo below, looks like an orange juicer!)

What you really want to avoid for this application is the 1000 series models which are the smaller eggs with the 3" woofer. As long as you can find anything with a 2000 or 3000 series designation I think you'll be good to go.
