Using the Paradigm Signature S8 as a point of reference, what speaker brands would ya'll recommend in the same price range that offer similair esthetics, build quality, and sound?

This is for a 2 channel system.

Thanks in advance.

If you want a full-range 3-way, I'd look at some Salk HT-3s.

For a smaller 2-way that will have better mids and highs, but not quite as much bass, I'd check out some DeVore Fidelity Super 8s.

There are a lot of good options among the usual suspects like PSB, Paradigm, Energy, etc, but be sure to at least take a little time to look at some of the stuff you may not know by name. There are a LOT of very good smaller manufacturers out there. I'm a bit biased since I own the DeVore Super 8s, but companies like Odyssey Audio, Merlin, Salk Sound, SP Tech.....all stuff that is excellent, but most people aren't familiar with the names.

For something totally different, think about Magnepan. I had Maggies for almost two years and loved them to death.

I kinda started this thread because I wanted to learn a little about the smaller manufacturers, alot of people say the Gershman Avantgarde is great, can anyone here compare its esthetics with the Signatures?

The PSB T8 is amazingly similar in design (but Paradigm is just an offshoot of PSB, actually).

There are many. High on my list are Onix Reference, and Dynaudio.

I waffled between paradigm and b&w. For something in the class of the Signatures, get into the new 800 series with the diamond tweeters.. Awesome!

Might consider Wilson Audio also.. Maybe some older Watt Puppy's or the new Sophias. That would be a significant upgrade I'll bet.

My thoughts exactly. I love the Paradigm Signature speakers (I am upgrading from Studio 100s to S4s this week), but I would take a pair of used Sophias over the S8s any day of the week!

Also look into the Electra Be and Profile speakers from JM Labs. The Electra retails for a bit more but some dealers may be willing to move. I am moving from a pair of 927's to a pair of 1027's. I hope to get them connected tonight. But I would also look into the profile line as well. The 1027's are supposed to be better then Alto Utopia's.

It ain't easy being green.

Avantgarde is HORRIBLE, but that is just my opinion. Let your own ears be the judge.

I think Vandersteen model 3A signatures or the Quatro Signatures will hang with (or beat) the Paradigms.

Wow, really? I guess we hear different because the Sophias sounded terrible to my ears (later to be backed up by the frequency response I looked up on stereophile for them).

I've not heard them, but going more on reputation, I would have assumed they'd be awesome. That's not the first time I've heard this though.. which is surprising given Wilson's reputation? The Watt Puppies are very highly regarded. Tastes in loudspeakers can be so subjective and individual though.

I think he meant the Gershman Acoustics "Avantgarde" http://www.gershmanacoustics.com/avantgarde.html not the Avantgarde that makes the big horn speakers like the Uno, Duo, and Trio. That is if you meant that Avantgarde is horrible and Gershman's Avantgarde.

dlfromcanada,

Assuming your budget is around $5,000 USD, that will buy you great brand new speakers, or a truly high-end pair of used.

Martin Logan CLS II-Z, Linkwitz Orion, Dunlavy SC-IVA, Von Schweikert VR-4 JR, VMPS RM40, Magnepan 20R, Sound Lab M1... so many more great value speakers in that price range.

It would be fun to shop around with that kind of budget.

Yes, the Gershman Avante Garde.

I have yet to hear the 803D, it looks gorgeous but costs significantly more than the S8, especially so considering where I live.

Thanks for the responses.

I second Tyler Acoustics. I own the Taylo line. I believe Jose has the Linbrooks. They are quality speakers no doubt.

You should never go on reputation. You should go listening. If you haven't heard a speaker, you shouldn't have any sentiment one way or the other if someone states something that seems to go against "reputation."

I personally don't like Wilson either and I know quite a few people who agree with me. I don't think he knows how to make a speaker. To each his own.

Try the Monitor Audio GS60. Better than the S8 with a less obtrusive cabinet at 2K less.

Dynaudio Contour S3.4
Thiel CS3.7 *coming soon
JM Labs Profile and Be speakers

As far as the Wilson speakers I will 100% agree. They are overpriced garbage. I can make you a Sophia. Its all OEM parts.

What is your amplifier you are using?

I just ordered a pair of PMC FB1s to replace my Signature S2s. You don't hear too much about PMC in the US, but their speakers get rave reviews in the UK, where they are made.

I sold my N804s for the S2s and found myself really missing the full-range frequency response. Didn't think I was a bass guy, but I was wrong...

Thanks guys, great input. I'm gonna check out some of the higher end B&W's,
JM Labs, and Dynaudio, I guess I'm just a sucker for the bigger companies.

PMC looks way too industrial for me, don't like Wilson either and can't afford most of their
stuff even if I did. At some point I really wanna hear some Tyler offerings but I don't think I'll be doing that this time around.

I just heard a pair, driven by a pair of the new Rotel 1091 monoblock digital amps (500 W@8ohms) and they had a real nasal sound. I was not impressed at all.
