Bump. I can't remember what they were, but I thought there was some good discussion about these speakers before the tragic event on 8/11 ;o)

I just got a Cayin 88T tube amp (Sam Tellig likes this amp) and will report on it with the Pioneers. Back in Seattle I was using my Custom built OTL amp but that combination was too tame (I will hook it up once it cools down in Pilly - that thing gets as hot as an oven but is sweet sounding). I will also get a pair of Focal Chorus 806v's next week - they are hot on top but nothing a 1.5 ohm resistor can't cure. I'll have feedback on all this soon. Just wish I could get my Legacy's from the third floor of my house in Chicago to the third floor of my loft in Philly - that would be fun --- -- --- --

These speakes don't work too well with amplifiers with a high output impedence. Somewhat bright (especially in ultralinear mode) with a peak aroud 5000hz. That's right where Stereophile showed a large impedence peak. This was not the case when driven by my OTL amp Will try some bi-amping with some crazy power Crown amps next.

Hello Guy's,

I see you made the good choice; this Pioneer speaker range is awesome.
Didn't know about them until 2 months ago, up till than we had been auditioning over the coarse of a year many different sets for our new to build HT room. We do need a 7.2.
During one these listening sessions a set of 1Ex's where standing, not connected, in a corner. Since we couldn't find the sound we like we asked the salesmen to hook them up. All I can say it was a revelation, form the first second we knew that this was the sound we where looking for. My wife and I did many blind tests afterwards and came every time back to the 1EX's (with experiences as described in this thread before). In the same shop they also had a set of the slightly smaller brother, the 3EX. They sound very close to the 1EX but miss the sparkle of Beryllium tweeter, however they are amazing as well.
To make a long story short, we go for an all Pioneer HT set-up, with the exception of the subwoofers, which will be SVS PB13-Ultra's in piano black.
So here it is::
Fronts 2x S-1EX-W, Center 1x S-7EX-W, and surrounds 4x S-3EX-W. All of these we managed to buy brand new in a closeout sale for a ridicules low price. The heart of the system will be Pioneers 60inch plasma, the new Susano SC-LX90 and new Blu-ray LX91 player. BTW the W in the code stands for dark wood (all most black) which awesome and very chique.

We can't wait to hear this, but still have to do a lot of work in building the room (in a old farmhouse in the Netherlands) and that wouldn't be finished before Christmas.

Hello EDWARD032,

Sounds like a fantastic set-up.

I see you also fell for SVS, is in your room 1x PB13 sufficient? And how big is your room?
Im still not sure if one will be sufficient or that I have to go for a dual. my room has a high sealing (4 meters).
I'm going to use it 55% music and 45% film, at least that's what I think now.
Any thoughts on this?

Hi Guys,
I received my Pioneer S-3EX-W speakers two weeks ago. They are beautiful, very well made, and sound great! They are definitely the best speakers I have ever owned.

One nit to pick though, the speakers feet are not adjustable. They have a third spike that screws down from the back center of the speaker cabinet to adjust rake but no way to level them other than shiming. This has turned out to be quite the pita!

Other than that, I couldn't be happier with my choice.
Anyone else enjoying the 3s?

I just got a pair of Musical Fidelity 550K Superchargers this week and let me say those amps really made the Pioneers sing. Bass control is astounding and the soundstage just opened up to enourmous proportions. These speakers are truly revelaing of what is front of them. My B&K amp, which I knew was on the soft side, really is not a as good a fit for these speakers as I had thought.

bberns22,

So true! When I switched from a digital amp with 500 watts to an Accuphase E-550 with 30 watts into 8 ohms I wasn't sure it was going to work out well. Holy crap!! What an amazing difference in the sound quality and quantity, room filling with such pure emotional music. Once again, I couldn't be happier with my choices. I am glad to see that you found such a good match for your speakers and room. I had looked at those amps and wondered what they might do to juice-up the wattage of the E-550,espacially at the current price. Are you running them straight or adding them on to a lower power amp?

Just like the previous post, I want to know where to listen/buy these!!! I was looking at the paradigm s8's because a friend of them had them and they sound phenomenal, but then I found these, and I always have loved pioneer and would love to add these to my system. Couple of questions:

1. What are some of the prices you guys have been able to get for the full system (except the sub, as I plan on buying an SVS ultra or some other, open to suggestions)

2. What receiver are you guys using? If you guys are using separate pre-amp/amp, which ones? I have heard good things about the anthem statement, but also about dreadnaught III, but I am open to plenty of ideas :-)

Thanks for all the info!

I was poking around my local dealer's shop today and saw a pair of the S-4EX in the room. I'd never heard of them before. Didn't get a chance to listen. Dealer said he liked the other models with the beryllium tweeter better. I'd definitely consider 3 S-2EXs across my front if I could find a good price. Don't know if my local guy wants to deal or not.

Hi guys,

Just few words to introduce myself.

I am Sebastien, and write this post directly from France.

Please accept all my appologies for my very poor english. I spent some times in US for my studies, but it was years ago, and now I am no more used to speak english very often, so I am a little rusty.

I own a pair of Pioneer S3 EX for three months now, and I am very pleased by their overall performances. Like bberns 22 speakers, mines are driven my Musical Fidelity Superchargers 550 K.

It is a pity but neither the Pioneer nor the Musical Fidelity are well known, but this couple is absolutely a "must have"...

I'm sure your local dealer does like the S-2s better as they are twice the price. The fact is that the S-1EX and S-2EX were sort of a round 1 of Pioneer's current offering of speakers. The S-3X and S-4EX were the next round and in many ways a refinement of those first speakers. I'm not suggesting in any way that they are better but I am saying that they are a MUCH better value. In my former position at Pioneer I had the opportunity to demo both series on numerous occasions for myself and others, A/B, with the same amp. I would always give the nod by a small margin to the big brother, "Beryllium tweeter" speakers in overall performance but the customers who were prepared to buy either one would 9 times out of 10 choose the S-3. I say the S-3 and not the S-4 because when you add the stand to the S-4 it costs the same as an S-3. In Andrew Jones' own words "we designed the S-3 and S-4 to provide 80% of the sound quality of the S-1/S2 at roughly half the price". Food for thought.

As stated in an earlier post, I have demo'd all combinations of these speakers with many combinations of amps and transports. These things like power! Lots of power if possible. For surround pick your favourite brand amp(s) and give them plenty of power and you will most likely be satisfied with what you get. Having said that they still sound not too shabby with a modest amount of wattage.
For music I definitely have some favorite combinations. For my ears the best 2 channel setup that has yet to be topped, cost aside, is a pair of Moon 400 watt amps and a Chord Choral Series transport. It was stunning. The same Chord transport and the Chord CPM 3350 amp run a close second.
For a more moderately priced set-up that still produces wonderful sound you could go with the Pioneer Elite PD-D9 CD (only available in Canada and Europe under a different number) or BDP-09 Blu-Ray and a mid line Anthem amp. My first 2 choices on the amp side were quality over quantity so if you choose the Anthem buy the most powerful one that you can afford and justify.
I hope this helps.

Please don't laugh at me and don't think I am a troll in this, but the matter is: I have 2 S-3EX here as a trial, hooked on a Pio LX-82, and to be honest; I can hear only very, very, very little difference with my old Bose 301. My girl did a blind test (me having my eyes closed and she constantly changing the speakers from Bose to Pio and vice versa): 2 out of three I said 'Pio' where it turned out to be Bose...

I have no clue why, I mean, I can immediately hear the difference between mp3 and wav, so my ears are not completely rubbish.

Anybody any thought what might be wrong?

Anyone aware of where in USA or Canada one can order these speakers - S-1EX, S-3EX, S-7EX? Who still carries them.

I recently finished my set after finally being able to add the S-1ex speakers to my set of three identical s-7ex speakers and I couldn't be happier. Now the quest for better/different/more amplication starts, I guess. Though my Denon 4311 seems to be doing just fine.
