I love my PL100 speakers!

I heard from a dealer that the GX series is probably going to get an update fairly soon, anyone know if there is any truth to that?

Hi everyone,

Considering an upward firing pair of KEF R50 for Atmos enabling my setup. I would then place those on top of my PL300. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks

Silver 8s Reviewed in January Issue of Stereophile.

Nice review of the MA Silver 8s in the newest issue of Stereophile. The article begins on page 105. Absolute Sound published a review of the Silver 10s in their most recent issue for those interested reading that.

@Mepstein10

I've been waiting to hear that for a long time, I hope it's true.

The benefit of this is that you can grab the various speakers as you have the money without the fear of them being discontinued b3fore you complete the lot.

That is about the most glowing review a manufacturer could ask for. A ringing endorsement if ever there was one.

What Monitor Audio speakers are people using for Atmos (if anyone is actually running Atmos yet)?

I have a Yamaha 3040 and aiming for a 5.1.4 setup. I'm running (or I soon will be) 3 x Apex A40's across the front, Monitor Audio RXFX as side surrounds and a pair of Apex A10's as "rear presence" which are essentially the two back Atmos speakers. I'm looking for two front overheads.

Monitor Audio themselves recommend any of the CT-IDC range which limits me to the CT265-IDC, CT280-IDC or the CT380-IDC. The 265 is the most appealing as it's the cheapest but not sure do I need the [expense of the] IDC pivoting tweeter.

Is anyone using any of their cheaper ceiling speakers? I'm not even sure which of the trimless range is timbre matched to the Apex's.

Related to my question just four posts above--I was asking about KEF R50 as an upward firing option. Anyone has any opinion on those?

Every time I see a review on the 8's or 10's I want to upgrade my 6's... but then I think that $ for $ getting a sub to compliment my Silver 3.0 setup would be best.... they do look beastly tho.

Great review.

Yeah, you'd definitely see a bigger difference by adding the sub. Seeing any that you're considering?

Even with the silver 10's, I still keep getting the urge to add a big sub or 2.

You wouldn't regret it. My rx8s are great solo, but even better with a sub. Even better since building the second sub. Subs just handle the low stuff with more authority, especially when really cranked. Of course, it depends on the music and volumes you listen to as well.

It was my plan to build a couple of subs a while back but other priorities keep popping up

I have impatiently been waiting to get started. Very jealous of all these great builds you guys are posting.

I hear ya. When ordering stuff for my build, I bought two of everything because I knew I'd eventually build a second to match. I basically have everything but the wood and time. I'll be finishing school and having my first kid about the same time so no telling when it will actually come to fruition.

I wonder if anyone has gone from Silver 6's to GX100's and if so, what sort of differences are there?

I have a 3.0 HT setup that I use for movies, music gaming and everything else. Marantz 6009 with Silver 6's and Silver Center. Was thinking about adding some FX Surrounds (Silver Line aswell) that I can get for about $700 new, however, for $900 I can get a pair of Gold GX50's (Piano Ebony) that are 2 months old, lightly used.

Thoughts? FX's or GX50s?

Sweet! Just got my new Silver 8s a week ago and they sound remarkable. Massive upgrade over the Cambridge soundworks Ensemble III satellites I had before!

Would they strictly be for use as surrounds? If so, I'd stick with silvers and save some money. If you ever see yourself upgrading to Atmos, etc I'd probably go with silver1s instead since they recommend monopoles over dipoles. Plus they'll match the fronts.

Ya your right. I'll stick with the Silver line up. Good enough for my needs. But for now strictly surround. With the FX being able to do Mono or Di pole it can do the best of both worlds depending on my future needs.

Even so, I think I'd be better off with a sub as said before. I'll keep 3.0 and go to 3.1 before going to 5.0

Didn't realize the fx could switch, that's slick. Surrounds are definitely nice, but a good sub makes all the difference in the world.
Everything is better with a sub. I've loved my Hsu VTF 3 mk3, its incredible. The mk4 has more functions to fine tune and can even run sealed. Highly recommended.
If you're inclined to DIY, you can build a monster for the same money or less. I'd never built anything, but decided to give it a try anyway. Turned out really nice and learned a lot in the process. There's a ton of knowledgeable people here happy to help. I surely wouldn't have been able to do it without them.
Are you looking at any subs now?

My wallet is feeling it too. SVS's website shows they have a Canadian dealer which should save some money once you've recovered from the holidays. 45 day trial with free shipping both ways ain't a bad deal.

I'm thinking of buying the Sony DN850 AVR to power a pair of Monitor Audio Silver RX1's. I note that the both these are rated as 6Ohm - other than the impedance, would this be a good match? What if I was to go with the new Silver 1's which are 8 Ohms - would the AVR still be okay?

Cheers

Yeah, you'll be fine either way. While they don't get much love here, sony makes great receivers. I had two over 13yrs that are still going strong and have never had an issue with either one.

Hi all,

Happy Xmas first of all :-)

I would like to ask for some help.

My current system is:
MA RX6 speakers
Marantz Ki Pearl Lite Amp
Tellirium Q Black speaker cables
MF M1 DAC
Pioneer bdp160 as transport over digital coax (chord crimson)

I have recently changed from BX5 speakers to the RX6 ones and the overall experience has been improved a lot although I feel the mid sounds were a bit better (or just more coloured?) when we did some comparing lostening side by side, bass is mich more controlled and it gos mich deaper too.

I nearly bought a hardly used new series Silver 8s but my GF did not like the rose colour so did not get them. Since then I saw stock b (demo ones)Gx200 speakers for about the same price and was wondering if they would give me much better sound than the silver 8s?
They have smaller drivers but the ribbons and better quality components..

Although the new silver 8 has improved drivers, cabinet and mid drivers too.

Which one should I go with? :-)
We listen to
Jazz, pop, soul, acoustic and house music
(Leanne La Havas, taylor swift, ed sheeran, diana krall, dido, sam smith, etc)

Thanks

Richard

Gx200 is way better = clarity, very detailed, better imaging and soundstage
