OMG - That is really bad looking.. I bet WA is asking like 50k for them too..... If anyone I ever meet has them in their living room I will have to slap them around some. LOL

Your wife also hit the "nail on the head" with her discription.

They also qualify to me as the "speakers that would make the wife move out"...

I may have to get them for my Garage......

Empire 7500 Endtable Style Speakers W/Mable Top

I must confess I actually owned a pair of those at one time. They sounded worse than they looked, if you can believe that. Sizzling highs and thumpy bass.

Nelson Pass built these with some students. His reputation is such that I am sure they sound fabulous, but in the looks department they seem lacking. Not to mention HUGE!

They may look funny, but a lot of esteemed reviewers felt that the MBL101's were among the best speakers they had ever heard. In addition, I have auditioned them at a few audio shows, and I have to say, they usually make everything else at the show sound as if they are inferior to the MBL's.

Attached Images tech1.jpg (70.0 KB, 133 views)
tech2.jpg (68.0 KB, 111 views

I used to sell those Technics speakers in the 1970's. Their claim to fame was being "time aligned" with the drivers all lined up at the point of origin. They had a few year run and I actually have a version in my garage which served me well for 30 years until the foam surrounds of the woofer disintegrated.

Call me crazy, but I liked the sound of the version after the one you posted. I think it is the SBL300. I compared them to many speakers in our store and found them the best sound for the dollar. We weren't a high end store but sold Sansui, Technics, Onkyo, Cerwin Vega, Altec lansing, Sound Craftsman EQ, Teac level brands.

That was an era where working in a HiFI store was a cool job and you could make money doing it. By the time 1980 began, most electronics was pretty cheaply made as Sansui really hit rock bottom. The fist set of speakers shown on this thread were the later Technics speakers made as cheap as possible. The tweeters had these real cheap plastic 'lenses" and cheap stamped parts.

Commissions dropped down as well and selling hifi no longer paid or was fun and I bid farewell. You could make a decent buck setting up a system for a person and speaker wire was something you threw in and the cables were what ever came in the box. If you knew your product and had a good way of handling people you could count on a steady streeam of repeat customers who wanted better products.

Some of the best laughs were when people bought crap like Sound Design or all in one systems and found that for only a few bucks more they could have a 30 watt reciever, a belt drive turntable with cartridge and a pair of nice book shelf speakers.

The best speaker concept was from a company called Synergistics. They had a basic 8-10-12 inch woofer, a basic 5 inch mid range and a basic tweeter which they used in every size cabinet to start from a little book shelf to a large floor stander. High mark up, great spiffs and a sound which though not great was acceptable for the era.

Is it a speaker or evil lair home decor? I seriously thought of a movie where the bad guy hid his evil plans in that thing.

Personally, I don't care about looks, but these seem pretty unattractive. I do really like the sound of meridian though, I certainly would enjoy having those that's for sure!

Oh c'mon Chris, Magnepans aren't ugly. As a matter of fact - because they look like decorative screens - it's one of the few speakers that audiophiles can get their wives to accept.

Well, I'll tell you what. If someone is going to spend $40,000 for a pair of horn speakers - not including the required bass module - then they better damn well believe that these speakers are the most beautiful things they have ever laid their eyes on.

OMG, Are you sure those are speakers? I would be afraid when that is cranked up I will be blown threw the back wall.

I also do not think that dinky throw rug on the floor will justify as "room acoustics" for speakers like that. LOL

hmmm.. what is that thing in the middle?

Ok, that has to be the best ugly speaker pic I have seen yet!
