I haven't heard the s40s, but I imagine they have significantly improvements simply by seeing so much newer. If I assume the s40s are closer to the confidence than the older contours, you get a bit more mid-range clarity and bass definition.
Thank you. Contour 1.8 MK2 looks nice speakers and good specs goes low to 28 Hz.

Anyone looking for a great Int. Amp that isn't talked about much here, this one comes to mind, especially at this price.. I use to have one of these and think they are a tad better than the Musical Fidelity A5 I own currently as my backup Int. Amp.

aschen: I think the 1.8MKII is still one of Dynaudio best all around speaker for any type of music!
aschen and wersuss like this.

Dynaudio, Magnepan, Belles, Hegel, Musical Fidelity and KEF, etc......Contour's 20's/Special 40's or Raidho next...

callas01: You could be right, as I have only heard the 260's in a demo and I liked what I heard. On another note more good music here... depending on taste, but the Dynaudio's make it sound that much better!

After the 1.3mk2 i owned the 1.3se for some time. Top quality loudspeaker.
They do not pop up very often anymore, and in case they do, usually sold quick. And that is for a good reason.
Always found them very sweet sounding. Immune to add any hint of listening fatique.
Nice very controlled deep bass and sweet high treble.

The veneer can sometimes shift in colour due sunlight.
A good pair is worth here around 1000 euros, and it seems nowadays they gain more value than loose.

S40 has more clarity, detail, texture and scale, and you could rank it a few steps higher,
but nevertheless they share a 'wow just wanna listen music now' factor

Definitely some great bass in this song...... I usually keep the grills on because of the speakers being in a high traffic area... but had to take them off for this song so I could see the woofers dance on this song.

Oh,so you are using your sub still George for 2 channel?,I thought you moved to the D2 s to get the extra bottom end that the D1’s were missing.I am not using my subs for 2 channel, but some of these tracks people are posting make me think twice about that.

Lyle Lovett, She's Already Made Up Her Mind, from Joshua Judges Ruth

It has clean sub-bass that complements the music rather than overpowering it. It's a track I'd actually listen to for musical enjoyment, as opposed to some of the more gimmicky tracks which are probably better left for subwoofer sales demos IMHO. Nevertheless, it's still somewhat stressing on small monitors due to the cone movement it generates.
Garman and Bluvette like this.

Guilty as charged LMAO I have just over 6 songs where the lows dig way beyond even what the C1's do. D2.1's only go a hair deeper. I fire up the sub mostly to shake the cobwebs off. Honestly I use it maybe 10 - 12 times a year at the most. 1/2 of that is for watching a movie.

Next time I'm at Adams I want to hear that song on his system. 30K EMM labs cd going into Aavik monos driving D5.1's with a pair of Rel S-25's. I have a feeling that song would break up kidney stones

Yes it is excellent,I have is on DSD which I play on my TEAC PD -501 player, most Dire Straits albums are top notch recordings, and this album is not overplayed on the radio...except Sultans of swing.
My favourite song on the album is Wild West End.

Limit To Your Love, is definitely a torture track; with that computer-generated, piston-popping bass. But if you want to hear how deep you can go; play I Never Learnt To Share instead.

Get to the end, and you will either hear DBs...or not, depending on how low you can go

Sorry to be a bit unromantic, but if you want to test your woofers just get some tracks with test tones at a given low frequency. i still have test CDs, but this kind of thing is available online, for example from Tidal. You can then easily measure the volume where distortion becomes audible and when the woofer starts popping. Make a note of it and then test the next speaker.

Just make sure your amplifier is up to it. If your amp is weak, then it will start to distort before the speakers do.

Looks great, but it is not a special 40,looks like Contour C20...too rounded to be the 40.
yes if you zoom in,you can read the plate on the bottom...c 20.

And that will be grey OAK,not the grey BIRCH like the special 40s,which is probably a little nicer finish,Borderdog knows much more than I do about wood grains, but going by price alone, the OAK would be a superior finish.
