One thing about the Brits, they're not exactly known for their efficiency.

Yeah Aaron- they actually did only request 50% but I had my bonus in place and wanted it done and not spend on a new amp or something (the other 50%). Decided to go a head and pay in full and be done. Not the best move on my part but that was never a concern. The delivery dates are...

Get-Together

Okay Guys,

I'd like to move the GTG back to the middle of April.

A few reasons:
1) Virginia's spring absolutely explodes about the middle of April. Even though we generally get spring-like weather middle of March, April in Virginia is something to experience. (the azaleas, the Dogwoods, etc., etc.)
2) I've been inundated with orders, but I'm falling behind a bit because of our below normal cold. My heat in the shop can't keep up, so there are certain processes I just won't do unless it's a certain temperature.
3) Typically, I take the big plasma out of the room after the Super Bowl, but this year it looks like UVA (ranked #2 ) is going to be in the mix for March Madness.
4) It gives everybody a bit more time to plan.
5) I should have a pair of C2's by then and have the proper time to get them placed properly and their spot marked on the floor. (Of course, the S25's will be there.)
6) I might have my sense of humor back by then..LOL.

Your thoughts,

Aaron

For what? Virgina's springtime weather? I've lived all over this country and there is nothing like springtime in Virginia!

If you want to hump your speakers down, that's fine. But no electronics.

GTG- The Electronics

Hey guys,

This will be the electronic equipment at the GTG.

Dac; Ayre QB-9 ($3K)

Preamp: Dave Belles' VT-01 ($5.5K.) It's a hybrid tube-amp, but yet still allows me to tailor the sound by swapping tubes. (I lean towards the Siemens). http://www.powermodules.com/vt-01.html

Amps: A pair of MB-200 mono blocks ($8.5K). It's a true high-current amp that outputs 400W into 4 ohms. It will output 800W into 2 ohms. http://www.powermodules.com/mb-200.html

Yeah, yeah; how about the Whisky line-up? I'm partial to Aberlour and Woodford.

CD,

As far as hard liquor, you guys will have to bring your own. I've not had a hard liquor drink in probably 30+ years...it got me into too much trouble. In fact beer gets me into too much trouble...LOL.
In fact, I probably won't be drinking at all for that GTG. I will supply some good ales and some good pilsners, but after a certain point, you all might have to chip in.

I will also supply a lot of appetizers and food.

Aaron

I don't know what Johnny Blue is, but would love to see you attend.
Do you have some Belles gear?

Johnnie Walker Blue label. Best scotch whisky I've had. Smooth as hell. Unfortunately, Belles and the Blue are both out of reach of my wallet.

Just some levity Dog. Some food and a beer is one thing; but I don't think anyone is coming to this thing, to get hammered...lol. I just want room, to set up a pair of speakers. What fun is it, to just come listen to your system...without a little friendly, "competition"

Advice required on Contour 3.4 LE

First post from a newcomer to this group.

I was fortunate enough to visit the high-end audio exhibits at CES earlier this month with a view to narrowing down a pair of speakers to replace a pair of 18-year old Missions. What really impressed me was the Contour 3.4s and I have tracked down a dealer who has the LE version in stock and I'm going for a demo tomorrow. A couple of questions that some of you enlightened members may be able to answer from experience:

1. My listening room is 5mx4m (17 x 13 ft) and the speakers would be a maximum of 45 cm (18") from the wall. Speakers would be placed along the long wall. Is this room too small to accommodate the 3.4 and is there enough distance from front wall for these rear ported speakers? (A home demo may not be an option).

2. Here in Ireland we are fairly limited in terms of makes of amps available but the following are: Hegel (very interested in H160 - 150W @ 8ohm); Devialet 120 - 120W into 6ohm, and Simaudio 340 Neo - 100E into 8ohm). I have heard that Dynaudio speakers can present a challenging load for speakers - any thoughts on how the listed amps might perform with the 3.4s.

Thanks for your input

Should have no problem with any of those amps. Did you hear that setup in the picture. Looks like they used an Octave V70SE but could be a V110 (70W or 110W @4ohm ).

Your room should be OK. The bass will be reinforced as the speakers get closer to the rear wall.

Hmm; 18" is a little close for my tastes...and why I love, front-ported speakers. I actually think 1.4(LE)s might work just fine in your space; but if you have a preference for the floor-stander, I don't think it'll sound awful or anything

IMO, get a Hegel 200 or 300...if you can swing it.

It is a V110, first time I heard one and it was running with a T+A streamer. Sublime sound with the 3.4s

Thanks for the feedback. The speakers I currently have are front-ported which suits the size of my room, but front-ported speakers are like hens' teeth. Besides, I'm smitten by the 3.4. The Hegel 200 is discontinued but I could stretch to the H300, but would rather not if the H160 had enough grunt. I will be able to home demo the Hegel's before I commit.
