So I should not buy used Utopia of over 15 years old even if it is cheaper? I see the floor standing Utopia for $6000 where the new ones are way over $10K.

I thought speakers are electro-machenical device, they don't improve much over time. I design amps, the high end ones pretty much stay the same in the last 20 years. Basically the availability of higher voltage transistors in the early 90s. You see the most famous two books in amp design still using designs from the 70s.

I can see the low end stuffs improve a lot, but the high end stuffs are pretty stable over time.

hey ... you check out what you want and buy what is best for your ears and wallet. quality is in the eye of the beholder. personally I think the last 10 years brought a bit of a step up in the utopia series but heck if feel the old ones from 15 years plus ago are just as good then go for it

Hey guys, would love your thoughts on amplification for my pair Focal 1038 Be. I am using a Cambridge Audio Azur 851W with 200wpc. It seems like a great amp in my limited experience. And my buddy tells me I'm crazy for asking this. But I just wonder if more power would help me get even more out of the 1038s. I thought about getting a second 851W and using each as a bridged mono for 500wpc. If it would be a significant upgrade I'd love to do it. If it's just a minor tweak, I'd rather spend money elsewhere. I know these are high sensitivity speakers, but I just wonder if they could benefit from more power. I'd hate to have such amazing speakers and not get the most out of them. Thanks for any suggestions or help.

You wont get much going with more power. the 1038be are efficient and an easy load to drive. I switch between a 300 watt per channel Levinson amp and an 85 watt per channel tube amp. Both drive them to any volume I listen to. I usually do have them crossed over to subs though but 200 watts should be plenty.

Thank you so much for your reply. That's the same thing my buddy said. I do plan to get a couple of subs to fill out the bottom, but I want to keep the 1038s full range. Which subs are you using?

I'm using 2 paradigm sub1s crossed at 60. I also use rew to adjust phase and level. They match up great

Thanks! My buddy has a pair of Sub 1s with his Sopra 2s and loves it. I have some serious WAF to deal with (it was a challenge just to get the 1038s into the living room) so I was thinking of a pair of Paradigm Seismic 110s to fill out the bottom end.

Do you prefer one amp over the other?

Can you clarify what you crossed the speakers at and what you crossed the subs at?

The speakers are set to small with a crossover of 60hz in the Marantz preamp so the 1038s are only playing down to 60 and the Paradigms take over.
For music I prefer the Prima Luna tube amp with Kt 120 tubes. Ive tried many different solid state amps, (Magtech, Pass Labs, Usher, Parasound) I liked the Levinson the best but then I tried the tube amp and had to keep it just for music while the levinson is for home theater. I just switch the speaker wire at the amp end. I use Banana plugs so its easy.

I am about to invest in Focal Aria 5.0 setup plus BK XXLS400 DF sub.
Powering all this will, probably, be Marantz 7010 or 6010. I haven't decided yet on an amp. Maybe Yamaha 2050 or 3050...

What do you think, is Marantz good enough to play them nicely, smoothly and with warmth?

I was thinking of getting 906 as fronts, CC900 as a centre and 905's as surrounds.

Do you think its a good setup?

Aren't 905's too much for surrounds?

My room is 4.6x3.6m, ceiling is about 2.3m high.

I will be very glad to hear your thoughts

I don't know anything about that sub or the Marantz so I can't comment on that. The 906 look great. Why not the SR 900 for surround? The 905 seems like a waste if it's for movies. I'd only do that one of you really love multi-channel audio listening.

I decided on 905's because of couple reasons:
Price is almost the same.
My sofa is about 10cm away from the back wall. So placing these SR speakers on the back wall wouldn't be too great as i will be sitting almost under them. On top of that, tjere is a book shelf going on the back wall, which will be on top of my head, and then potentially above that shelf would be the SR speakers.

Occasionally i would like to listen to the surround music. About 5% of the time...

Focal SIB XL home theatre package

I am getting a focal SIB satellite speaker package with 3 SIB XL for the Left, Center and Right.

But I am confused with what surrounds to go with. Should I go with the smaller SIB satellite speaker for the surround or the Polk OWM5 which is well reviewed as a surround speaker for small home theatre systems.

Also how is the sound in general of the SIB XL speakers? Is it too bright?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No they're not too bright. They're actually great speakers. As far as getting matching sib rears vs some random Polk surrounds -- assuming that's a serious question, absolutely get the Sib surrounds. Getting the Polk surround would be completely nonsensical.

I have fallen in love with the Sopra #3 and #2 and I have not even heard them yet, but I am trying to find a pair to demo. Not sure if they are at RMAF or not, as I am planing on attending this year. Would love to spend a little time with them. I don't know why but I like them in Orange?
