Thanks for sharing, I am afraid tilting down will not work either. BTW the 948 are the same height as 936 (926 are shorter)

Not sure about bass traps. I tried a piece of foam behind and in the corner, and it sounded more muddled

I will keep experimenting. With the previous 726 I was able to tweak the bass, as I had connected to a subwoofer via High Level input, what allowed crossover setting, but with the 948 I have removed the subwoofer (now connected to the central to balance the more power fronts Inhave now, but that is a different story)

Focal - JM Lab Owner's Thread

Has anyone tried the 948 (or 936) without the plinth, directly on the floor? Does it reduce the bass or increase it?

I ask before trying myself, as it is not so easy for me to remove the plinths

Thanks!

check your port holes, i have read some have experienced the internal wadding/stuffing falling down/blocking holes somewhat. I havent experienced any of that. speakers may need to break in a bit, 40 hrs or so.

only other thing I might think of is a room peak resonance...would need something like rew and umik mic for that tho. or test cd and spl meter.

I have Focal Electra 1028 Be speakers and wonder if my Anthem MRX500 receiver is "controlling" them to the best of their abilities. 95% movies, 5% music.

Been looking at secondhand AUD1000 (USD785) power amps like Primare 31.2, Music Fidelity A3CR, and a Arcam FMJ A39 integrated amp.

I have the volume usually at 75dB which is about -15 to -20 on the MRX500 (which can go to +10).

Anyone have experience adding a power/integrated amp to a receiver to drive 1028 Be speakers?

in the musical fidelity A3cr, i think would leave wanting. think musical fidelity a5Cr power at minimum

an A5 integrated will also do, as with say later m6

the primare for what ever reason I have never found to gel well with focal....

Lately, with the Focal Sopra No 2's, I had a chance to live with a Hegel H20 for a few days, and that's probably the best pairing I've heard with any Focal speaker thus far. Definitely costs more than an MF A5 or A3cr.

Right now, I'm running the Sopra's from an Exposure XXVIII Dual Mono, and that's been a pretty great combination too. Not as sublime as the Hegel, but at a quarter the price, one can't really complain. McIntosh / Focal is almost always a pleasing combination too, though a bit warm and sometimes leaving more to be desired.

But Hegel H20 is a power amp. What did you use as preamp?

Oh sorry, I thought KoNpHuSeD was looking for either power amps or integrated's, as he's doing 95% movies and had both in his short list. I'm kind of in a similar situation, I'm probably more like 50 / 50 movies and music, but been considering integrated's as well just to have more choices.

When hearing the Hegel, I had it being driven by the receiver in my system, an Arcam AVR550 (I use the Arcam's built-in amps to power the center and surrounds, and the front channel pre-out's to the Hegel). I tried some outboard DAC's previously too, for music listening, like the Wavelength Brick, but have been pretty happy with the Arcam's built-in DAC, so used that for evaluating the Hegel. At this point, I don't really feel like the Arcam has been a weak point in the system.

When I auditioned the Sopra's and became sold on them, the integrated I heard them with was the Line Magnetic LM-518IA. It's a tube amp, but had no problem driving the Sopra's. At home, I tried out both the LM and the Hegel back-to-back, a few days each, and while there's definitely something special about the LM (and would be my first pick if I needed an integrated), my initial conclusion was that the Hegel and Sopra's were the better combination. I'd want to spend more time with them both though, before buying, at this point I'm still undecided. But if you can, I'd definitely try out the Hegel, I was not expecting much and was really pleasantly surprised (I mainly tried it out just because I wanted to hear something solid state and that wasn't an integrated, as a comparison point to the LM).

Probably they come out with a bigger Kanta No. 3 later, like they did with the Sopra. Probably a Kanta No. 1 monitor too?

The two 6.5" drivers will be able to handle a pretty big room, similarly to how the electra 1028's punched above their weight.

They will be $10,000 for the pair. They are basically a Sopra Lite. Much better speaker than the Electras were, which says a lot (although they are priced accordingly).

Yes and yes. I hear a center and surrounds will be coming too -- I hope so.

Wow, I thought it would've been priced similar to the Electra 1028. Seems there's a big market for speakers around that price point, $10k not so many (and the ones that are, might be willing to make the stretch to the Sopra's for not much more). Still, I like where the design aesthetic is going, even if I'm not as crazy about the look of the Kanta as the Sopra, it's a very modern look compared to the Electra's.

I have a local audio shop with a pair of Focal Aria 906 demos that they are axed to sell. Im currently running dual hsu subs in 5.1.2 with prime elevations and q100s q200c in a 12x14ft room. Sitting about 9-10 ft away with them about 10ft apart. I?ve been getting more into music and considering upgrading my mains. Any owners can share their thoughts on them? Dont see much about them around.

Absolutely the most musical bookshelf speakers you can get for $2,000 or less. Good god grab those.

The reason you don’t hear much about Focal on here is because this Forum thinks internet direct speakers are the best speakers you can buy.
