Okay I know there are many Bose haters on these forums and a lot of you have good reason - you can get a lot better sound for a lot less money. But one good thing about Bose is their ability to create good sound and save a lot of space at the same time.

I never thought I would buy Bose until my wife bought a huge entertainment center that bridges over my 56" TV. Now I don't have enough wall/floor space for my tower speakers. One of them sticks out about 4 inches into the hallway and with little kids that's not acceptable. One good thing about the entertainment center is there is plenty of room for bookshelf speakers. My brother has the Bose 301 Series V and they actually sound damn good, especially for their size and they would fit perfectly in our new entertainment center.

My question is, are there better sounding bookshelf size speakers out there than Bose for $300 or less? Any input would be appreciated.

Anything by Ascend. HTM-200 @ $278/pair will blow the Bose out of the water. They are sealed too, so they should work will with your entertainment center.

For $150/pr you can get Infinity Primus 150's. Listen to these for 10 minutes, then listen to the Bose, and you will immediately understand those of us who tell you that Bose makes worthless crap.

Ditto. The Primus 150's will smoke the Bose 301's

Just two to replace my floor speakers. I want speakers that will sound good for music as well as home theatre. I already have a center, two rear and powered sub.

It is? Because I have never heard Bose speakers that created "good sound" as you say.

Surely there are (is). Check out the x-ls bookshelf speakers from **********

Check out JBL, Polk Audio, Infinity and Athena. Also look into the other Internet Direct companies.

$50 Insignas from BB sound better than those bose. I would suggest looking into a pair of Paradigm Titans if you have a Paradigm dealer in your area. They can be had for ~249. Also, you may want to think about buying a new center to match the fronts.

What center speaker do you have? Your two front speakers need to be timbre-matched with your fronts to sound good with HT material.

Its a 5 year old sony center channel so I probably do need to upgrade it. So its not as important for the rear speakers to match, correct?

In as much as your budget was 300, you may want to consider the whole Primus Theater Pack. A matching center is highly recommended and matching surrounds can add to your enjoyment.

Damn, beat me to it!
You definitely should get matching L/C/R speakers.
Toilet paper rolls put up against the TV speakers would probably sound better than bose. The nice thing about the toilet paper rolls is the ability to adjust the sound coming out the other end by using some of the toilet paper. Don't use too much though, otherwise your bass will go to poop

I'm not recommending Bose. However, a word of advice; the 301's are a direct/reflecting speaker. They shoot sounds in multiple directions, expecting walls to reflect the sound. If you stick them in an enclosed entertainment center, you wil eliminate the reflections off the walls and they will be reflecting off the insides of the entertainment center. They won't sound anything like they do at your brother's. You want a direct radiating speaker (one that shoots all the sound forward), if you plan to put them in an entertainment center.

Several good bookshelf speakers have already been suggested. Here is a review of 4 budget bookshelf speakers in your price range. That same website has many more speaker reviews. However, the best review is your own. Go listen to speakers and see what you like. There are lots of choices in your budget.

I owned a bose lifestyle 30 for the past 6 years and recently unloaded it on eBay. I was able to buy a much better sounding system for less than I sold the 6 year old bose system for. I purchased a HK AVR435 and HKTS 14 speakers/sub. Total cost was about $820 and I sold the Lifestyle for $1,200. With the spare cash I got some outdoor speakers and a Harmony 890. Which reminds me: my biggest beef with bose is not the sound quality but the fact that you are stuck using their remote control...

If you decide to go for the Infinity P150, the Primus line has been discontinued... meaning you can get great deals, but if you want a matching centre speaker, you should buy it now, rather than waiting or you may not be able to find one.

If you decide on Primus 150s, matching center Primus C25 is on sale for $100 at Circuit City.

Any of the Axiom bookshelves would also be far above BOSE quality/sound.

Overpriced....well, on other forum someone compared the old acoustic wave system to a good $5000.00 system and liked BOSE better! I will find out in about 3 or 4 weeks, there is a waiting list already for this new acoustic wave system!

IMHO at that price range you may have a hard time. I'd say it's much better to listen to the speakers before you buy. I personally like Def Tech Mythos speakers (I have a pair of Mythos 4) for price-performance. The Mythos Gem which are their bookshelf speakers should also be pretty good. Not sure if they will sound better than the 301 though.

FWIW. I also have a Bose system in my living room (LS 48) and they sound good to me. Much better than the Sony system they replaced. I live in a high rise condo, so for the living room we were limited to a HTIB type design and the Bose was the one that worked best for that room. The size of the room is appox 25 X 15 and the Bose are ok for a room this size.

Anyway, my recommendation is to buy what you feel comfortable with.

I was told that this new acoustic wave system will be better than the Lifestyle 48 and alot louder too.

It would be interesting to know how many who are saying "speaker XXX will deffinitely sound better" have actually heard the Bose model the OP has referenced. For the record I have not heard the 301s and do not own Bose. OP your best bet is to go and compare other speakers and decide, you may get some ideas of other speakers to check out from this thread but as far as the claims of what is better, I would bet most that have made claims have nothing to base them on.
