I can count myself as one who was "dead sure" I couldn't have screwed up the wiring on the back of my receiver when I installed the new one.

But I did, and Audyssey found it.

I doubted the finding at first and carefully checked everything again. Sure enough, it was ME.

System includes KEF R500 floor standing, R200C center, R100 surrounds, SVS SB2000 subwoofer, NAD T758 receiver, Bluesound Vault, Sony BDP-S480 BlueRay player, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer, MCS System cassette deck, AudioTechnica AT-LP120 turntable. The last 3 items are dust collectors but will work if asked.

Yup! I saw that too and it is a great deal. Which finish interests you and do they have it?

I think they only have the black finish; I tend to prefer rosewood or walnut

Obviously, Kef's have much broader dispersion but don't have the bottom end of Gold's........other than that, not much Timbre issue. I did calibrate Kef L/R's using XT32 before sitting down and having a listen.

Using SPL meter, 60 degrees off center axis produced -3 db's 9-10 ft from speaker....................wide dispersion specs after several discussions with Kef tech were close to spot on.

Finished product.................

Backer boxes were built to KEF's max spec for volume ie 0.71 cf..........lined with acoustic foam and 1/4 lb of acoustic stuffing. Each speaker has F3 rolling off according to REW measurements close to 60 Hz.

Hope this helps............................these KEF's produce a wide, HUGE sound field and are worth considering for Atmos duties...........they sound fantastic!
Where can I buy backer boxes like that?

Thanks for sharing! I haven't heard the C series KEF so I do wonder how they compare to others in their price range.

It appears you have young children in the home so as a guy who started having children in 1981 (and 1983, and 1991) it was hard to spend money on more expensive stuff and fear of damage was mitigated by the lower priced stuff I could "afford to lose" to rambunctious kids. Great choice!

my nephew came over last weekend and the first thing he did was run downstairs to grab the iPad to play some games on. On the way he saw my LS50s in the tv room, went "wwwooooooowwwww" and ran over to stick his finger in the waveguide.

Lol, he is a quick little bugger and got a good feel. I told him not to touch and that the speaker cost more than he does, which his mother did not find funny

Is his mother your sister or his father your brother? If his dad owns any speakers, tools, or other gadgets, I'm sure he'd have an understanding of the comment. Wimmenz just don't get it.

yeah ive got a 3 yo and 3mo old, my 3yo is really good about them we will see how the other is when she is older. They sound really good actually. My parents have the kef iq90 towers iq60c and iq30. That's what made me want kefs when i was able to afford them. Anyway The kef c series blow away old jbl loft setup I had. Way clearer and more defined. I picked up the c3, c1 and c6 for less then 500. I dont know why they have gotten auch bad reviews. But I like them, way more immersive then then my jbls even with the loft 50 towers.

I've noticed the sale on the Q100 and Q500, is this a normal thing or could they be clearing them out for new models?

So far loving the Ci200QL. Running 5 in 5.2 currently and picking up 4 CI200QR to finish my dedicated theater room set up. I wasn't sure about going in wall. I have a KEF 9.2 set up with iq90, iq30, iq60c in another room. Not disappointed at all at the CI performance.

Ok to use a single KEF Q100 for center with Q500 towers?

I am almost ready to pull the trigger on a L/C/R setup using the KEF Q series speakers.

On paper the Q100 looks like a better match to the Q500 towers.

Model Q500
Design Two and a half-way bass reflex
Drive Units 130mm (5.25in.) aluminium Uni-Q 25mm (1in.) vented aluminium dome HF 130mm (5.25in.) aluminium LF 2 x 130mm (5.25in.) aluminium ABR
Frequency response ±3dB 40Hz - 40kHz
Crossover frequency 2.5kHz
Amplifier requirements 15 - 130W
Sensitivity (2.83V/1m) 87dB
Maximum output (SPL) 110dB
Impedance 8Ω

Model Q100
Design Two-way bass reflex
Drive units 130mm (5.25in.) aluminium Uni-Q 25mm (1in.) vented aluminium dome HF
Frequency response ±3dB 49Hz - 40kHz
Crossover Frequencies 2.5kHz
Amplifier requirements 10 - 100W
Sensitivity (2.83V/1m) 86dB
Maximum output (SPL) 107dB
Impedance 8Ω

Model Q200c
Design Three-way bass reflex
Drive Units 130mm (5.25in.) aluminium Uni-Q 25mm (1in.) vented aluminium dome HF 130mm (5.25in.) aluminium LF 130mm (5.25in.) aluminium ABR
Frequency response ±3dB 50Hz - 40kHz
Crossover Frequency 500Hz, 2.8kHz
Amplifier requirements 15 - 130W
Sensitivity (2.83V/1m) 85dB
Maximum output (SPL) 108dB
Impedance 8Ω

The main reason I ask is because the Q200c is too big to fit in the center section of my entertainment center, or on the top for that matter. The Q100 will fit very nicely though.

The thing that gives me pause is that KEF does not sell the Q100 individually, and I have not read about anyone using the bookshelf speaker over the Q200c.

Also, I will be getting a Denon AVR X3200W to run them which is rate for 105W. The Q100 is only rated for 100W. Is this ok?

Thanks in advance
Phil

Good to know, thanks for sharing. I'm sitting on four of the Ci200QR that I snagged off the local Craigslist for $100 each. I'm giving them to my son whenever he gets ready to go Atmos/DTS:X in his theater/gaming room. All he needs is a receiver that can handle 7.1.4 and to run the wires up into the ceiling. That won't be too difficult as it's the only part of the house that's relatively new (1997) and has a low-slope roof over it. He wants to add more insulation up there anyhow and we have the CL-2 rated wire. Those will match his Q300/Q200c/Q800ds/iQ10 array perfectly.

Phil, I can see why the Q200c wouldn't fit below the screen into the entertainment center, but don't understand why you couldn't get it above. The Q200c is the only true 3-way in the Q series, and as such is really quite good for a center speaker's main task of reproducing voices of everyone from alto female to baritone male...very smoothly. My son has one mated with his Q300 L-R mains and the set looks and sounds incredible. Hard to know it cost less than 1/2 of the R series setup I have.

You might be able to find a single Q100 on eBay, just don't be choosey about color. It would be hidden inside the cabinet anyhow.

Brandon, yes it was such a bargain for new, never installed or even opened that I snatched them up as soon as I found them there. I didn't even try to negotiate a lower price. The seller was a property manager who had overbought on quantity for an installation as "Public Address" speakers in a multiunit housing complex and just wanted them gone. I didn't need them, but because they are a perfect match for the system my son has been putting together, I grabbed 'em. He sure couldn't with a wedding later this year and a SWMBO to answer to.

Cheers,

Ken M.

I'n using Q900 and was wandering if others toe in there speakers. My speakers are about 2' for side and back wall and sitting 11' from them. I just got my 2nd VTF-15H subwoofer and will rerun Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and REW this coming weekend.

With both Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and the REW, you should be able to easily verify what your ears tell you.

You don't say how far apart the Q900's are and in relation to the 11' listening position that determines the angle. Also part of the consideration is how many listening positions are there to be averaging out for speaker toe-in angle. Your speakers do have a fairly good range of tweeter dispersion so can cover well a wide soundstage.

Purchase 1/2" or 12mm Baltic Birch and build them yourself.............................very easy..............just add glue, nails, line with acoustic foam, and add 1/4 lb of acoustic filling!

I'm more than happy to help...............and if you can find a friend with a CNC machine..........even better!!!!.

Your speakers do have a fairly good range of tweeter dispersion so can cover well a wide soundstage and there may not be a significant enough improvement to justify disruption of aesthetics.

System includes KEF R500 floor standing, R200C center, R100 surrounds, SVS SB2000 subwoofer, NAD T758 receiver, Bluesound Vault, Sony BDP-S480 BlueRay player, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer, MCS System cassette deck, AudioTechnica AT-LP120 turntable. The last 3 items are dust collectors but will work if asked.

In that case you do have an almost equilateral triangle (assuming the listening positions are close together) and should see some benefit from moderate toe-in, in the form of less tweeter volume off-axis falloff.
