I think they have word of mouth and good marketing helping them. Most consumers dont read the internet forums and I reckon the margins are better for the retailers.

Thank you for your opinion. I also do think the Q series sound great. Why do you think moving from the q900 to the r700 wouldnt be a lateral move? Advantages of the R series, better XO, better cabinet, better drivers. I really want the r900, but cant come to mind to spend 5k plus tax and then have to upgrade the center to r600 which is another 1500.
I guess I will have to figure it out...
how much better is the sound quality from the q to the r series based on your opinion.
I think the reasons you mention about the better components and build quality go a long way into how the R series sound. To me the lows are tighter which I prefer and more they are overall "musical" but still handle HT very well. Are you able to demo any of the R series to hear directly for yourself? If so, would highly recommend doing that...when I was auditioning the R series I was also considering Revel F206 and 208s, B&W CM series and 804D. I liked the others but preferred the R series - the only one of those that outperformed the R for me was the 804D and I didn't think the price premium was worth the difference. So my additional $0.02 on the R.

I've had both in my system and think they're both good. I found the B&Ws more analytical and the Kefs more musical.

Your trading quantity for quality I guess is the simple answer. The Q series will not have quite the resolution as a similar priced R series but will offer more range and probably sound more agreeable with mass market receivers. I used Kef Reference in my 2 channel room with higher end electronics and Q series in my HT room and was happy with both setups. Curiosity did get the best of me and I swapped speakers to the other rooms and noticed right away the degradation of sound quality coming out of the R speakers while in my 'better room' the Q speakers sounded very good but still not as detailed as the Reference. Hope that helps.

You mention KEF Reference, R, and Q series speakers. You're not confusing the high-end KEF Reference series with the more moderate R series are you? I'm not sure, but the price of an R series might be double that of an equivalent Q series whereas the price of a Reference series would be multiples. That is, the KEF Reference series plays in a different ballpark than the R and Q series. I'm guessing no one would be deciding between a Q and Reference series speaker, a Honda or a Bentley.

I think R700s with an R600c will make an excellent LCR setup, and the rosewood is beautiful. Congratulations on such good choices.

Cool. And nice choice of a single malt Scotch. I actually prefer their 12 yr to the pricier 18 yr, and do like Macallan and other Highland makers over the peaty ones.

Later when funds allow, consider getting the CD's ripped so you don't handle them physically anymore. I use a Bluesound Vault 2 now and love it. My turntable and LP's are my one shift back in time, and do enjoy the results of "the procedure" when I have the time. Otherwise I have tablet in hand, select and play my CD's or Tidal HiFi...and perhaps a glass of Jefferson's Ocean Aged At Sea Bourbon. Yep...gone to the sweet side and loving it.

Agree on the scotch . I sometimes try some of the Islay varieties but the peatiness is definitely a challenge. I love the way each scotch differs based on the local water. It makes for a fun hobby! I have not heard of that bourbon, so I'll check if we have it up here. I was introduced to bourbon many years ago when I was travelling through Kentucky and toured the Jim Beam distillery. The funny thing was it was in a "dry" county so I had to wait until I got back before I could actually try it. I also enjoy our Canadian whiskeys from time to time, like Wiser's. I tried some Jaimeson's Irish whiskey recently but found it a little too "bland" in comparison to scotch. Ahh, it is a good life, sampling different varieties while sitting back in a comfortable chair, listening to good music, wondering if I should upgrade my speakers to the R series.

Update: I took the day off yesterday and got my new Q100s and Q200c up and running. I also installed a couple of glass media shelves up in the corners for my bipole surrounds to angle them more into the corners. I definitely notice an improvement, mostly from the centre speaker, but it is a much bigger speaker than the AJ. I played about with a variety of videos and music, and was really pleased with the way my blu-ray of Neil Cowley Trio Live at Montreaux sounded! I reran YPAO after setting them up and it threw me again for a while until I checked the settings, because it always sets my speakers to Large and the crossover to 40Hz which essentially eliminates the sub. I was actually getting pretty decent low end with just the KEFs but knew it wasn't right. I reset to small and 80Hz and it is a good blend now. Hoping to play some more blu-rays over the weekend if the kids can get off of Youtube

Have both dual svs sb 13 ultras turned off for music.
Im using a onkyo m5000r to power the r700s w a Denon 4308 as a pre powering center and surrounds. Very nice balanced smooth tight sound from the onkyo m5000r You guys should check out this amp ...very solid $2500

I guess I missed it but why not use your two Kef CI3160RL-THX for your surrounds? Wouldn't they beat out 2x Kef CI200RR-THX? Maybe there are advantages when surrounds match in ceiling speakers.

I sold them off. Could have but just thought it was a bit excessive and the Ci200RR came up good in the custom boxes.

I still own and have at hand every one of my CD's. I still have a Sony CD player hooked up to my receiver if I feel like using it. When I got the Vault (original version V500 first), I felt sure I'd be still loading and playing the CD's. That has not borne out to be true, and I really don't miss handling those jewel cases and disks. The turntable and LP's are work enough to keep me "in touch" when the mood strikes. I'm 57, BTW.

The No.1 reason I chose to rip them with a Bluesound Vault (and later, Vault 2) was so I get one top-quality copy of the file with the least errors, and it plays exactly the same way EVERY time I play it. You don't necessarily get that with playing the CD every time because error correction has to be done "on the fly."

Bourbon and Scotch? I'll have mine neat, thanks. Once in a while with the right drink, maybe a few drops of cool water to "open it up" a bit.

It's obvious we are from the same generation, even if you had not given away your age. I also am using a Vault2 and still have every CD I ever purchased, but all stored away in the basement. The CD's are my back-up. I don't understand how the younger generation can put convenience over quality when it comes to music. Just this week a millennial was shocked that I was considering spending $300 (on clearance for half off retail) for a hi-rez portable player. He shows me the plastic band/watch on his wrist and tells me that it can stream music. I asked "Bluetooth only, correct?" And he said "yeah". Not sure that either one of us got our point across, but it does appear that things are starting to trend back towards quality.

Q300 vs Q500?? (with sub)

I have Monitor Audio bronze 2s and would like to give KEF a try. I am deciding between Q300 vs Q500.

I have a subwoofer and its pretty good. It meshes ok with the MA Bronze but I find that with a crossover that its set at, the bookshelves dont extend down enough to get a nice mid-bass presence. And driving up the subs make it noticeable. That's primarily why I'd like to go with Q500 as they have woofers and low end that can extend a bit further down to bridge that gap better.

But Q300 is 6.5" drivers vs the Q500 which 5.25", so theoretically.... the Q300 would be better from everything above the bass? Q500 basically have the Q100 on the top side..

Anyone have any suggestions?

My son has an SVS PB2000 subwoofer and was running a pair of Q300 and Q200c as the L-C-R setup. I have the R500 mains and R200c center and an SVS SB2000 sub. For about 10 months my son would come over and comment about how smooth the blend is on my system, that the subwoofer doesn't even seem to be there when playing most music.

In early October (2016) I gifted him a pair of Q500 speakers. He can't stop raving about how much he likes the improvement in his system. Your experience could be much different.

But I doubt it.
