However the receiver keeps shutting down, sometimes randomly and now when I turn up the speakers for a movie. I don't know if it's a 4 ohm issue or just the usual HK suckiness. I'm looking for something new or used, hopefully under $1000.
Denon X4000 seems to handle them just fine.

I would suggest a 950 as it will be a better much with your existing 150's.
Great info, thank you! I am not familiar with the 950 series (Google also came up with nothing) Do you have an exact model number or link to specs / pics? What do you think about running dual 750 THX? Could i splice them together and run them at 4 ohms? My amp is good with loads down to 2 ohms.

Thanks!

The 750 are nowhere near a good as the S150's.

The 950 are a much closer match. They feature the new Pro tweeter.

+1.

The 750s can work quite well with adequate subs and good room cal. But then, that's true of lots of speakers. 950s are a different animal, much better. S150s are simply "the reference".

Caution to all original S150 (non mkII) owners...treat 'em nice, there are no more replacement drivers in the world. MKII drivers are not interchangeable. Blow the center tweet, you'll be buying a used S150 on eBay.

I want to treat them right and make them sound as good as possible without breaking the bank.
So you scored a great 2.1 system. The S-90s seem to be the hidden gem in the bigger scheme of M&K products over the years. It's a close Kin to the S-5000THX in fact as I've written in other posts , When space constraints doesn't allow the user to use an S-5000thx, the S-90 is recommended as a direct replacement to use in it's place. as a 2 Channel set up the S-90 / V 125 combo will certainly hold it's own against other models in the M&K Line up ( S-125 comes to mind) .

In any case if you're looking at 2 Channel amps for stereo functionality. An ADCOM 555 / 555 II , Carver A500x , are fairly priced on the used market. NAD 2200PE, 2400, 2600a are also very much up to the task. Other brands to keep watch for B&K, Rotel, Parasound. again if you're looking at "previously owned" units there are several options at all price levels.

I STRONGLY recommend getting a high pass filter ( placed between your pre-amp and amp) choke the sats at 80hz and let the sub handle the rest. M&K had a few variations . If you're using an AV pre-amp or receiver. you can sort out hi/low pass within that unit so no need for a separate passive unit , but if your pre-amp doesn't allow for filtering ( most don't , although Parasound's P5 does and is also a solid DAC) you should find a hi pass filter so that you can properly dial in the S-90's to mate with the V-125 sub.

There isn't much chatter out there on the web about the S-90's but it's a great sounding speaker system. Music, Movies the whole nine yards.

Speaking of the S-90s, anybody have any S-90 speakers they are looking to sell or know of any being sold? Same for the S-5000. I've got a S-5000 LCR set and I'd be damn happy if I could build a full Atmos/DTS:X setup with S-90/S-5000. I suppose I could settle for S-100B...

On the matching front, the S-80/85/90/100B/125/150 should all be timbre matched, correct?

I also have 3x S-80 speakers and a MX-100 sub for anybody interested in a buy/trade offer.

Don't have a part #, but I suspect it's unique to the S-300, and there may actually be two part numbers involved, like the S150 (the middle is one part, the upper and lower is another). However, since a great deal of the voicing of the speaker is the tweeters and crossover, I wouldn't expect them to use the S150 tweeters. As you know, the S150 and S150 MKII use very different tweeters too.

MK just announced today that product will (once again) be distributed by Magnolia. Depending on how you view Magnolia, this comes as either good or bad news.

IMHO, I'm going with "good for MK and Magnolia, bad fur everyone else".

I think it's a real shame that the U.S. market hasn't been able to access the new MK products. Even if it is Magnolia, as Dave says now you can.

If you liked the MK of old, then you will love the new MK even more so.

The one near me has a fair selection of premium lines in a horrible retail display and an auditioning room that is impossible to hear anything in. But there they are, everyone else has packed up and gone home.

LOL, this just happened to me at my local Magnolia. 3 employees where sitting outside of the demo room. I walked right by them, and they did not even acknowledge my presence. I was in the room for 20 minutes trying to get music to play, with no luck. Peaked outside the room.... crickets.

I wondered why there wasn't much talk of MK speakers over on here. At least there will be a supplier now (though I've no idea who or what Magnolia is, but I get the impression it is a bit like the old 'Comet' chain in the UK).

I've had my MP150 for over a year now, used with a pair of white (thanks to Rich's input here) S150T as side surrounds and an old pair of K4 tripoles as surround backs. I also have a small set up in my conservatory using a 4.1 set up of K5 fronts and more K4 surrounds.

My plan early next year is for a bit of a rebuild of my living room and installing a pelmet all round the room (not sure what the US term for a pelmet is?). I will get a suitable Atmos/DTS:X AVR/processor so I can run 5.1.4 set up with MK speakers.

I will then be able to discretely install 4 x 'ceiling' speakers and move the S150T lower down nearer to ear level for the surround position. They will have to be further back than ideal due to a patio door on the right side of the room, but I think it will work well. I'm not 100% sure what speakers will be used in the 'ceiling' positions, but I have a spare pair of K15 and can recycle the K4 that are currently surround backs in my existing 7.2 set up. Since my 'pelmet' could be AT fabric then I could put any speakers up there, even scruffy second hand ones, so perhaps some 950s if any turn up.

I've added a couple of pictures of my MK set up now that I've found this thread. My TV is on an electric lift so that I can have my MP150 LCR all at the same height for critical projector viewing.

OMG, is that for real? Where?

Reminds be of the old days when I sales guy told me, regarding a cassette deck, "You record with Dolby on, play with it off". I cringed visibly, then explained how Dolby B worked, that it was an encode/decode process and you had to leave it on, and to his credit, the guy humbly apologized.

Magnolia is found within Best Buy stores, trying weakly to be a boutique audio store within a discount appliance store. No idea who thought that up, but it must sort of work, it's been going on for years. M&K announced this week they and re-partnered with Magnolia, so yes it's another supplier, and that will be good for M&K, but...well, you do become known by the company you keep.

That's kind of how I perceived Magnolia just going on the comments I've read on here.

It's really odd compared to the UK set up though; we have very few outlets, but those who do sell them have very well set up demo rooms, so you really get chance to properly hear what they can do. Basically it is a much more 'high end' product over here, with appropriate high end dealer support.

The UK distributor Gecko is near me, and is where I got mine from (picked my white S150T up the same day as Richmagnus as it happens). They have amazing rooms including a more living room type area and a proper all black dedicated room. Another dealer in the North UK IdealAV has a similar light and dark room set up. Both have regular forum days where we can go and demo without feeling under pressure to buy (though of course eventually I did ).

I've never heard anything good about Magnolia but at least there is a chance now that the U.S. can get to hear the new MK Sound Products as they are serious speakers, out performing the brilliant MK of old.
