I have been using NHT speakers since 1994 if I recall dates properly, and NHT won't be making any money off of me any time in the rear future.

Recoton went BK, and Rockford bought NHT from them at a fire sale price. Rockford only kept NHT for something like 3 years.

Still, the assets of M & K will be sold to someone one way or the other (via BK or voluntarily). It is just a matter of time!

Why not? They're on *fire* right now. We were already one of the biggest dealers and my sales more than doubled last year purely on the strength of their latest products. Their preamp/processor/amp set up is fantastic.

NHT was doing well with them. The problem was that NHT was only 5% of the entire company and car audio tanked. NHT couldn't possibly save a $250M company and so they let them loose to get some quick cash flow. NHT never made a ton of money but they never really lost money either. They weren't ever in it to get rich. They're musicians and music lovers through and through.

Unfortunately, it's not really that likely. Why would someone buy the assets? The speakers designs are ancient, so that's not happening either.

I wonder if Kreissel tried to sell the company.

Thier designs, while some may be long in the tooth, still hold up very well in the marketplace.

They also have some state of the art development and testing equipment. All of which I'm sure will be sold relatively inexspensively.

Sad that a company with their heritage went under.
Sadder still they handled it so badly, especially to their employees.
No excuse really.
The management knew it was coming for awhile.

So the next question is what to buy to replace my S-5000 THX speakers if need be? M&K said that these speakers costs so much to make and that is why they stopped making them. The S-150 was much more profitable. I have 7 of them in a 7.1 setup and if one goes I can just replace it with a rear or side channel. What brand to go with? I like the accuracy, dynamics, and huge soundstage these produce. I don't want it to sound like it is coming from a box. This is why I changed from the S-250's in the first place to the 5000's.

I am not sure why they were 'so expensive to build' compared to????. They are very good but certainly there are other speakers out there as good or maybe (BIG RISK SAYING THIS) even better. Granted, the S-150 was a class act and not easy to follow.
But get your ears out there and do so more listening, you might be surprised.
With the numerous companies out there, big and small building quality loudspeakers I don't understand why some folks feel they've been cheated or something. With the exception of those still waiting for parts, etc.
It's not the end of the world, if anything it presents a new opportunity or challenge.

I have never seen so much discussion on any internet forum concerning M&K as I have seen since they folded. Why is that, if they hold up so well in the marketplace?

I'm not saying this to criticize their products, only to wonder why nobody talked about their products. I have a V75-MKII sub that I bought several years ago after reading a favorable review. The only dealer in my area (Cleveland) was a mom & pop TV store, out in the distant suburbs. The dealer was fine, the sub worked great. When I needed another sub recently for another system, I found that there were no more M&K dealers nearby, so I bought an updated version of the V75 for an excellent price from the M&K online store. The new sub is better than the older version, works great.

Two weeks later, they closed.

I agree, they are not very popular, not to be confused with not highly rated. But then are many other fine speakers in that category.

and this is surprising how?

they refuse to give google.com.cn up to google. GOOGLE for pete sakes!!

anyway that "trademark" if you will is only in China. In the US. It is still part of Miller & Kriesel until it gets liquidated to the highest bidder though. See who picks it up.

I have listened to many speakers before settling on the 5000. The axiom epic 80 system, The klipsch THX ultra 2 system, a Maganepan system, Powered monitors, of course other M&K, and a few others. I liked the 5000's the best, then the Klipsch. I am thinking to replace these(could be 10 years) I am looking maybe the big klipsch speakers(Heritage series).

BTW, when you say better, which ones are you pertaining to? I know there are much better speakers, but you have to spend alot more and I want accurate speakers that fill the room which are very dynamic.

What a sad deal...

As the person who started this thread it has gotten more responses since M&K closed its doors than it did when they were selling speakers!

I could see the handwriting on the wall for this one...all of the local dealers around here where dumping them as a line due to supply issues. As stated in a post a few pages earlier a long standing supply issue = they owned their suppliers $ and they finally had to call it quits. Too bad they let it get to chapter 7.

I love my S-150's and have been fan of this brand since I sold it in college.

To those that own them cherish them! I am going to go fire up the X360 and play Gears till my ears bleed now

I expected something was up as well when My M&K dealer were dropping them for supply issues as well, and they always praised the M&K's over everything else in the store(for theater). I just finished watching SW sith and I WILL cherish my 5000 system for a long time. I almost sold these at one time to go powered speakers but I am glad I decided against it. I never knew this thread existed until recently. For the guys that own M&K let me tell you for home theater they are hard to beat. I have many wealthy friends who have other very expensive speakers in their theaters and they always want me to calibrate their systems after they heard mine because they think something is wrong. I just laugh and say nothing is wrong. I am an upgrade junky so at least this forces me to change brands when need be.

I was trying to gracefully explain to someone who was looking for them in my area a few months back, why he was likely having such a hard time finding a dealer that still carried them , and he took offense at the suggestion that they were in trouble. He actually took the time to call me yesterday (he had kept my card ) to thank me for trying to steer him away (which I really hadn't tried to do as I liked some of their stuff). He did buy a pair, but will now use them in another system as he was eventually going to use them as mains in a SS system but now wants to find another brand.

What would you do.........purchase a new in the box M&K MX350THX for $1600.00 or go with a JL Audio f112 for $2400.00. Presently have four M&K Bottom End 1Bs powered by a Hafler 500.

I bet you can get an MX350 for a lot less now. Especially used. Have not heard the JL, but I imagine they are good.

Hey All
I just stumbled on a guy selling a M&K MX200 Sub. A discontinued model I know, what reviews there are were positive. The price is ridiculously low, I'm thinking of just picking it up... does anyone here like or dislike this model? thanks in advance......

If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy.

Not right NOW, they may be selling a somewhat of a premium, but in another 6 months , I'm sure they will drop quite a bit.

I don't agree with "you can't go wrong with their sub"

I currently have 3 MK subs and 19 regular speakers (S5000,S150,S125,SS500,SS150 etc. . .)

In the 20 years that I have had MK speakers I have had NO problem with their speakers.

HOWEVER, I have had to send in 2 of subs for repair (covered under warranty)

So what happens next time when a sub goes bad?? They are great subs, but they do run into issues. I would make sure to plug them into a VERY nice surge protector.

Guess I have to start looking for a sub that will match those speakers.

I recently purchased the M&K B1600's. I know they're advertised as full-range monitors but I've given sub duties to a DefTech Supercube I so I leave the port plug in. Has anyone tried permanently sealing the B1500 or B1600's or is the port plug more than sufficient?

Pioneer broke my heart.
Denon broke my wallet.
Oppo broke my thinking.
