I am using an ex demo set. No way I could have afforded the SS2 brand new

Shame though.

When most reviews of subwoofer talk about specs, they talk about low frequency response but never really about the speed or tonality of the bass. That's something that the SS2 delivers.

I remember using my old SVS 12" sub and watching the BR of Chris Botti in Boston. There was a segment when Paula Cole was tapping in time with the music, except it didn't look like it was in time.

My audio delay sync adjustment was spot on (her mouth moved in time with the words)... just the the tapping. It always bugged me.

Then I swapped in the SS2. And here's the weird part... she was tapping at the high hat timings but on the SVS, the bass was so slow that it masked the high hat so I never noticed it before.

Does anyone know what (if any) qualitative difference there is between the Powerpoint 1.2's, and the 1.1's? If they exist, are they significant?

Sure, even Thiel's literature describes differences. The question is whether they matter to you. For me, for surround duty, I'd be happy with the older "1.0" model for the back surround of a 7.1 setup.

I guess I didn't search the Thiel site extensively enough. I will look again.

Thanks.

Top of the product page is the comparison with the original Powerpoint:

"The second generation 1.2's cast aluminum cabinet significantly improves both clarity and dynamics."

I saw that, but it was a little generic and non-specific.

For instance, it wasn't until I read a review of the first Powerpoint that I realized the original cabinet wasn't made out of aluminum as all.

NewGate88,

I have a pair of PP 1.2s for surrounds. I'm still amazed at how well they sound for 5-channel music and movies. I've even ran them stereo just for grins. I'm not sure how well the 1.1 sounded, but the 1.2s are a real treat. Please note that they are 4 ohm speakers that like power. So a good amp is necessary.

I would like to hear a 5 or 7 channel system of all 1.2s. Also, the blend really well with SCS4s.

Ben,

Thanks for the independent testimonial. Your experience parallels every review I have read of the Powerpoints.

At this point, the question is somewhat moot, as I was considering the purchase of a pair of used 1.1s that have since sold. I have however, learned enough to know that I would lean heavily to sticking with 1.2's because the changes made were to improve detail and clarity (see below).

As a new owner of a pair of SCS4s, I remained STUNNED at the detail and clarity on "display" every day. Which is way I am now looking for ways I can expand the number of Thiel speakers in my system much faster than is possible (for me) by buying new.

There is a pair of new 1.2 powerplanes on Audiogon right now. I picked up 5 1.2 powerplanes and 2 1.2 powerpoints (for wides) as I am about to do a HT room remodel. I bought them all of Audiogon over the last 2 months getting ready for this project and got them all brand new in the box for 50% off retail. If you have some time they do indeed come up on Audiogon either new or in good shape used. I also just bought a new NAD M25 7 channel master amp off Audiogon as well since the Thiels are known to be power hungry :-)

nice, I was wondering how you'd do your in-wall with the brick wall. Are you gonna paint the speakers the same color as the wall?

Sweet setup

I'm in the process of assembling my gear for my new home as well and it would be an all Thiel 11.1 setup

CS3.7s for front LR
MCS1 for center
SS2 for sub
Powerpoint 1.2s x 4 for side and rear surround
Powerpoint 1 (pre-owned) for wides and heights

Powered by
Bel Canto REF1000M x 2 for front LR
Bel Canto RREF500M for center
Wyred4Sound ICEBox MC 6x250W/8ohm (ASP500 modules) for side/rear surrounds and wides.

Will post pics but I'm not good with DIY so will probably leave the speakers on the floor like what the reviewers do for most of the channels. Will really have to get some elbow grease to handle the height speakers :P

Wish I could afford a second SS2

My set up 3.7s LR that replaced 2.3s... great
mcs1 for center.... this is the only thiel speaker I ever had trouble with. The tweeter has gone out 3 times in almost 10 years. Of course Thiel has replaced or repaired, I do not know which, at no charge. I did ask Gary Dayton last week what the problem was, and did not as of yet receive an answer.
1. power planes for surround
paradigm ?? in the ceiling for back speakers.
Mark Seaton submersive HP sub... would like to add a second one.
Anyone else have touble with the msc1. It is the only speaker that has been in their product line this long. You would think they would have cured the problem
gerry

My MCS1 has been thankfully problem free.

I am using the BCD REF500M to drive them.

I think I am going to keep them white for now since they match the white trim in the room and then down the line might paint them.

CS3.7 price increase on July 1st, up $1000/pr, I guess $1000 is nothing for a $13k pr of speakers, but this makes it further out of reach for me. The in-wall and in-ceiling ones are also up another $100 each.

I have a new to me pair of Thiel 03a's with the EQ. I recapped the crossovers and EQ, refooamed woofers and midranges (one had hole so I did both), and Thiel replaced bad tweeter for my.

I've been a vintage guy so I'm driving them with Sansui 890DB - Euro version of 8080DB ~ 85 WPC receiver. They sound excellent though I find I need to turn mids down for my liking. May need to have Thiel verify my EQ ia working properly.

I've read that someone had built EQ's for these whithout utilizing op amps. Does anyone have information on this?

Extremely impressed with support from Thiel BTW. You just don't see that anymore

I had a set of Swan's M5000 HT speaker system matched with a Yamaha Aventage 700, sounded great. Then one of the fronts decided it could not handle Chris Botti in Boston, developed the dreaded shrill of a blown driver. I decided to see what my vintage 1986 Thiel CS2's could do, same impedance ... hooked them up ... holy mother of home theater!!!! With the Swan center and rears matched to a Hsu sub, I was blown away!! I remembered why I loved that speaker so much!!! Imaging is incredible, soundstage is awesome ... well,Thiel fans already know this! I was shocked that a system I bought in 1986 can outperform anything on the market today. I have heard Logans that do not come close to the vintage Thiels ... am I nuts? Looking for your experiences. Thanks and hit them straight!!!

Ah, the CS2! I'm still using a pair of CS2.2 speakers in a stereo set-up in my living room. I'm powering them with an old Adcom GFA-555 II amp and a Bryston pre-amp, and they still sound great after all these years. I'd love to have a pair of the CS3.7's as an upgrade, but the costs simply outweigh the benefits for me.

For my HT, I'm using five Powerpoint 1.2's in a 5.1 system with the SS1 sub. I love the sound of that system as well, although the imaging from my CS2.2 speakers is hard to beat.

Spent the last week fixing up shelves and positioning my speakers for a full 11.x setup. My second Smartsub 2 is offline at the moment, waiting for the new amp module. Can't wait.

Anyway, here's some pics to help revive this thread. Too bad my attempts to hide the wires have been dismal

Amazing equipment! Thanks for the pics.

How large is your room? I couldn't tell from the perspective in the photos.

I know what you mean about the wires, but at least they should disappear with the lights down low.

The room's 4.2m wide x 7.1m long or thereabouts

Thanks. It's been a really long time getting all this installed, but listening to the set up now for music and watching movies, it's just sublime.

I have a room about the same size with just a single SS1 sub, which works fine for me. I can't imagine what a pair of SS2 subs would sound like, but I bet it will be great.

How are you dealing with the crossovers to all those speakers? I've got just a 5.1 set-up, but I'm using a custom Thiel 5-channel crossover designed to work well with the 1.2 Powerpoints. The sound from the sub and the 1.2s blends perfectly and just seems very natural and "right."
