Slightly damaged -

Hope the mods don't mind

Just bumping the thread:

Happy Thiel 3.7 owner here, still :-)

So glad I got in on the legacy speakers. To my surprise, since I bought mine they seem to have become actually more rare, with higher asking prices.

Looks like no AVSers have bought into the new Non-Thiel-Thiel speakers huh?

Just not the same after Jim past away.

The 3.7's at $10K MSRP upon thier release in 2007 (?) were a great value. The raised the price to $12K due to miscalculation in bill of material cost on the cabinet's rounded top and new tweeter.

The center was one of the best I have owned/sold.

I really wish they built the MCS with the CS3.7 drivers...

That would have been epic. I could have bought another MCS1 and delegated my MCS1 with the new one for surround duties

Yeah, man that prototype for the center channel looked sweet. I wonder who has it.

(I know a guy who ended up with a single one-off mythical speaker design by Paul Hales that only ever made a single appearance at an audio show. Lucky bastard).

Hey guys, I have an opportunity to pick up a pair of Thiel Powerplane 1.2 in wall speakers for $250. They are used and appear to be in good shape, cosmetically.

I'm pondering using them behind an AT screen in a home theater set up.... Very little music.

Can anybody comment on their experience with these speakers, and what I might compare them to?

I'd be chasing a third speaker for a centre as well.

Current theater setup uses RBH 1266 towers, if that's any help.

Good for surrounds perhaps but not enough umph so to speak for LCR.

Not sure if you can google the specs for dispersion an max/avg SPL

I use PowerPlanes for my surround rears in my 7 Thiel home theater. They're decent speakers. I would try to add 4 more if I decide to go Atmos. They're obviously not full range, so you'll need a sub or 2.

If possible, audition the speakers before you buy. I have blown a couple of Thiel tweeters in my years of use.

I'm not sure what you'd compare them to. I have Atlantic Technology in-walls in my family room, and the PowerPlanes sound better, with a bit more bass. (Both systems have been Audyssey-ized.)

So I got an MCS1. It's very good. I'm slightly disappointed that it isn't quite as invisible as when I use a phantom centre. I've played around with crossover and volume settings trying to get the speaker to disappear, but there's always somebody's voice which draws you right to its location. I'm sure guests sitting off-centre will appreciate it though.

Pardon me for going back a few months, but "personal issues" have kept me away.

Just a report on the 2.7s and the SS2 sub. I've been using them for about 6 to 10 hours a day, both via a superb FM station (WBJC Baltimore) and my CD collection - - - driven by a Bryston 4B SST2.

Yes, IMO, the break-in took some time, but was worth it. Now, after around a year's use, my three "golden ear" and classical music-loving friends claim that the sound is exemplary. To use some of their words - - - "Natural - Put Together - Clean - Superb for extended listening - I can lose myself in the sound - Now, I truly believe accurate stereo made Mahler listenable - Doesn't tire me out to listen - Seamless and honest bass - and, Gorgeous, clean. sound."

Of course, being mine, I agree, but I'm really happy, and I do not feel the itch towards further upgrading. (The Lambda Pro Stax headphones still are a wonder).

Now, all I have to do, is to select the source and composition, sit back, and enjoy!

I see that as good news but I'm not sure this spells anything good for the firm in the long run.

Sigh.

What an end to a good surfing.

Not really any big news about the new line. Also does anyone know of a dealer that carries the new Thiels?? The dealer list is not very accurate.

Sad to hear the news about the company, but is anyone really surprised? The new owners should have changed the name if they were going in a new direction.

Gary, one of the longtime workers of the "old" Thiel is at Bryston now. Maybe Bryston will pick up the pieces of the soon to be gone Thiel and bring back the some the concepts and designs in their own speakers............................Ok, ok, one can dream.

The CS 3.7 is a killer speaker!
I recently scores a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers! I can hardly await to build a system around them

Wouldn't know where to buy them if I wanted to. No dealers in my state that have them set up to audition.

Did you pick up the Thiel Powerplane speakers? And if so, how are you driving them? I have several I picked up for free and need to decide which receiver / amps I can use.

I did, but haven't installed them.

I hooked them up outside of the wall, and they sounded AMAZING. I ran them with my Emotiva IPS-1.

After all the trouble I had, a few years ago, with multiple coax drivers in my CS2.4 SE, I thought you might find this coax assembly video interesting:

I have a pair of Cs3.7 . Considering selling as wife hates the look. can't imagine what the going price would be for a perfect black Matt finish pair in outstanding condition. Any recent sales? They really are amazing!
