Thumbs up

Stereophile gave the $7000 floor stander a rather mediocre review this month. I still have great memories for my 2.3's. Don't know if he still has them but my local dealer has a pair of CS-6's with the Morado finish. Condition is excellent.

Hi folks,

I started a blog site (at my wife's request) for the classic Thiel loudspeakers. I'm aggregating as much info about the older speakers as I can, including reviews and interviews. If you have any additions or corrections, please do not hesitate to contact me through the blog. Hope you enjoy.

just got 4 more Thiel Powerplane 1.2 on ebay at $100 each plus shipping!! unbelievable deal! there were overpriced at $1280 each, at $100, its a no brainer! The used market is or was flooded with PowerPlane 1.2, people are selling 5-11 at a time. I have 8 of these now. I first paid about $500/pr. Does anyone know the story behind why there are bunch of these available? I've heard stories like a lab was testing these or these were taken out from a building that had these installed thru out?
Pretty much all my surround channels are using this speaker, along with my CS3.7 for LR and MCS1 for center channel. Talk about timbre matching.

I heard similar about testing. I picked up 4 at around $200 each about a year ago to be used as atmos ceiling speakers. Still haven't installed yet, but close maybe next month.

Shivers.

Uses a "traditional" Thiel sounding number but without time aligned coincident drivers.

lets hope they don't price it so high, I might actually get one if it has the 'Thiel' name on it and it's half way decent. you know, just to support them and to keep the company afloat.

anyway, looks like they just changed the names, the TT1 is now the 40.2, the bookshelf TM3 is the 40.1, the 40.3 was supposed to be the TT3 that never came out, so these are probably all designed by Mark Mason before he was gone.

My guess the 40'3 will run in the $12-$14,000 range. This is their statement speaker. Also didn't they have a sub?? Not seeing it on the current website.

The Thiel sound is quite unique and IMHO quite unparalleled in the way Jim Thiel sought to correct time coherency. The CS3.7 is possibly the only floor stander I have heard that images better than some of the best bookshelf speakers.

With my twin SS2.2/S1 integrator, I have a full range speaker experience (down to 15/20Hz) with the imaging that I have found hard to beat.

I imagine I would have to move away from Thiel at some stage now there is nothing from them with their original coherent coincident design that Jim spent his life designing.

I'd say Wilson, Raidho are way more expensive than the CS3.7s and not really like for like.

That said I recently heard some Vienna Acoustics Music that gave me a little room for pause

thanks for reply

thiel was still my first choice , but honestly i dont know when they will stop repairing tweeter or woofer , so guess everyone have to go for some other brand in the future

imaging was one of thiel 's signature ,the clarity and instument seperation was brilliant too .i did borrow soem speaker home , like pmc ,dyna, jbl and raidho, but dont really likes it .sound quality was ok ,BUT the things was the respond was quite slow n lack of dyanmic .

for my own purpose was ht but with 2 channel quality , thiel gives super strong punch and dynamic even compare to THX movie speakers, like triad or procella ,they makes really good speaker for ht , but thiel makes even better, the impact and dynamic can be faster then ht speaker and the sound quality also far better than that on music concert or cd .

i used 2.3i with mcs1 and ss2 with 3 mono block with meridian g68 , its not a expensive combo , but really a killer set for ht .the thiel sub also was a crazy ass if u set it right .

i knew i m going to miss it ....

for now . i m trying to explore the speaker world n see aything similar to thiel refer to the speed n react respond .

Looking to sell a pair of Thiel 2.4 in dark cherry. Lightly used, original owner, in original boxes. No use for them in my current setup-location. Went to a a 7.2 setup with all Powerpoints.

7.2 with Thiel Power Points, twin Seaton Submersive F2's in Espresso. D-Sonic Amp, Marantz Pre-Pro, Richard Grey Power, Control 4 Home Automation, lots of Blue Jean Cables, Oppo 103D, QNAP 423, Roku, Darbee, Samsung Plasma 64" 8500 all in a Salamander Synergy 247 in Walnut.

Thought I'd bump the Thiel owner's thread, since I've been listening to my 3.7s more, recently.

I had to turn my 2 channel listening room into a home theater room and, for various reasons, this means I move my 2 channel speakers in to room when I want to listen. So I tend to move the speakers in, and go into 2 channel listening mode for a while - several days to a week or whatever - then move them out and get back into pure home theater movie watching.

The problem is that it's hardly ergonomic moving big floor standing speakers like the 3.7s into and out of the room. So I'm always on the look out for a smaller set of monitor speakers that might satisfy me enough to replay the Thiels, while being easier to carry in and out of the room.

I've been doing some listening to contenders, but once you are used to the coherence and neutrality of something like the Thiel 3.7s, it tends to spoil you. You really notice the colorations of other speakers. As I mentioned in another thread, I have the 3.7s set up wide and almost nearfield and even in my smallish room 13' x 15' though well treated - they COMPLETELY disappear sonically leaving a massive, densely populated soundstage and no sense whatsoever of "speakers" being there. It's one thing for a big floor stander to do this from the midrange up, but the 3.7s are tonally coherent and boxless from the very top of their frequency range to the bottom - the deepest bass instruments from synthesizers to stand up bass, "appear" as focused and distinct in the soundscape as any other instruments.

I'm sort of stuck because if I find a smaller speaker good enough to replace the Thiels, in all likelihood they will be expensive enough that I'd have to sell the Thiels to afford them. But I notice that these Thiels (e.g. 3.7 and 2.7 models) which used to be plentiful second hand when Thiel had just stopped producing them, have really dried up in the marketplace. Hard to find now. Which suggests owners aren't parting with them and if I ever regretted selling mine they may be hard to come by again.

I wouldn't sell them. You'll have to spend some big bucks to top them. Maybe!!
