I picked up the amp on eBay. about $450, it's the A200x3, the better of the 2 models per discussion I found here on AVSForum.

I've only been able to use it on weekends so far, watched 2 of the Potter movies, and Brokeback Mtn last night. One negative I notice is I have to tweak the volume a wee bit during movies to compensate for dialog in Bigfoot vs. remainder of sound from mains. In past I used the Pioneer auto setup only, looks like I'll have to go into the AVIA audio setup later today.

I'm not sure if the amp magnifies a shortcoming in the PIO system I hadn't been aware of, or poor mixing on the DVD, or some combination of the two. I don't think this happened on the Potter disks.

For music, it's made the difference between good sound from good speakers, to having the band actually in the room with me - especially on DVD-A material.

Thanks Billnchristy, I am simultaneously excited and concerned about my upcoming purhcases. Thanks for the tip on the different voicings. Regarding the possible lack of power of my receiver, I see that the x-series are not the most sensitive speakers. I can't remember the numbers, but they do require significantly more power it seems than my present speakers, perhaps even more than most speakers.

I see that the ulw-10 sub is on sale, an audioholics promotion kind of thing. Budget has increased to $860, lol. Too bad the sale does not include the black color. Seems like another great buy. Still I am concerned with not "upgrading enough"....thanks again, Jostenmeat

What you talkin' about Willis? Of course I'm wearing pants... It wasn't naked movie night when I took that picture.

I haven't heard a standard Bigfoot Sig yet. There was no such animal when I upgraded to a Bigfoot Ninja Master Sig.

I'm working on setting up my RS1K's this week and was wondering how much toe in/out you ended up with for your setup?

Also I think it would be cool to have a R-DES Screenshot competition to see who has the best and worst room response...I think I would already be pretty close to rapping up the last place position.

It's nice to see an AV123 thread back where it belongs. I have been privileged to hang around the AV123 crowd and Mark since the beginning six years or so ago with the venerable Diva by Swans. This is a great forum, ably run with a great deal of patience by Mr. Bott, and we thank him for that. I'm not as up on the current offerings at AV123 as I used to be, but it's a great company and deserves a lot of credit along with Hsu, Ascend, VMPS, and others for making internet audio the credible, viable medium it is today.
Along with the Swans, I currently have the following stuff:
RS1K
Bigfoot, the original.
RS750's
RS550's
RS250's
RSS 300's
RSC100
RS150's
Emotiva MPS-1
Emotiva DMC-1
Emotiva Lite
UFW-10
The fabulous ELF 5.1
Onix Cable
and ....a CD opener
I'm sure I forgot some stuff.
Mark's also helped me procure any number of hard to get pieces. Don't tell him I said so, but he's the go to guy when you can't get it anywhere else, as well as an infinite source of knowledge on audio and pretty much anything else.

I'm afraid I can't give you a good answer. I have a loveseat on one wall, a couch on the other, and the TV speakers are on a slanted wall pointed in between the two!! I'm embarassed to say this but I kind of have one speaker pointed at each seating location

You Sir, are a great representative of your company. In my brief history as an AV123 customer, I have experienced nothing but top notch service so far. The fact that you have a dedicated forum connected to your website speaks volumes. Whereas CNET's review may consist of one single editor's opinion, it does not remotely compare to an entire forum composed of a wide spectrum of customers (ranging from the novice to an audiophile) speaking positively about your products backed up by a 30 day trial period. For an ID company, that is the type of commitment I would expect from a confident company competing against other B&M stores.

Excellent suggestion. Let me put together my thoughts before I edit the first post. I was, and somewhat still am, oblivious of the negativity AV123 has experienced in the past on AVSForum. I will try to focus the first post to help prevent this of happening again as one of my main goals.

On a lighter note, I just received my rs450s in the mail yesterday, BUT have not hooked them up yet. At first, the wifey was not so welcoming of the HUGE speakers in the living room and her anti-Rosewood gibberish. She hesitantly let me order them for the sake of our marriage, but once they arrived, boy did her attitude change!

These things are BEAUTIFUL! says the wifey. For those straddling the fence on these, just order the damn things! Our black/expresso furniture match up really nicely with the Rocket's black lacquer finish and the red wood finish blends with our red designer sofa pillows. I haven't hooked them up yet because I'm currently running all my AV cables behind the walls and adding speaker wall plates.

Here's my work in progress
1) run speaker wire for mains, center channel, and subwoofer
2) run DVI, S Video, and Component
3) add electrical approximately 5ft to plasma
4) patch up holes
5) texture and paint (currently here)

My VERY HUMBLE beginnings will consist of Rocket rs450s and a Bigfoot powered by a new Yamaha 5950 receiver, and a 12 Dayton sub. Future plans will consist of in-ceiling surround sound with possibly a Rocket subwoofer.

AV cables ran

My AV cubby hole

New Electrical outlet with Romex behind the wall

Initial Patches

Secondary Patches with some texture

Texture up close

I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to compare the x-ls to the Orb Mod 2 speakers. Please refrain from the "try them both yourself and see" replies as I don't have the budget to buy them both then send one back. The Orbs have a better WAF as far as the surrounds go. I would love to hear from anyone who has had the chance to hear both.

This is an Onix/Rocket owners' thread, not a comparo thread. Let's not turn it into that. Why not start a new thread with your question?

OMFG! I just caught wind of the Strata Minis and I must say I'm in love. We primarily watch HT or video concerts on our system, but damn those are a dream come true.

Anyone have a pair that they use for HT? Is it hot damn good?

Could you tell me what is the difference after the Ninja upgrade to the rocket 850 ? Was it worth it ?

How would you compare 850 (upgraded) and 750 ? Also how would 850 compare to the Ref 1 or Ref 3 or Mini ? In particular Ref3 vs Mini ?

malbo1, what kind of amp(s) are you using for the 760's (and /or the rsc200) ?

I found out that they can really benefit from my paltry HK2000 amp (bridged, of course) and am currently looking for alternates and supplementary ones.

malbo1 nice setup. I am setting up a similar system to yours with the entertainment stand. I see your placement of bigfoot on the top of unit. I will probably have to do the same thing or place it on the shelf above the hdtv. However bigfoot is to tall for this, so I will have to raise the bridge or raise the towers. How does it sound up there? I have about the same wall 8.5' tall. I bought some of those auramax pads and figured I would have to use about an 8 degree tilt downwards for the tweeter to aim correctly. Have you tried flipping your bigfoot to see which way sounds best? I wish I could put below but that would destroy the look of the unit, plus no waf there. I appreciate your comments.

Thanks

I'm still finishing up some loose ends, but here's my Rocket setup so far... I'm going to attempt a phantom center with my rs450s and see how it goes. My rockets came in on Monday and I still haven't hooked them up yet...

But damn, these speakers are so sexy! Initially, the wifey was against them, but in person, it totally won her over.

New owner here. I decided to go with the Reference line largely because music is my first priority & based on the repuation of the Ref line as being very detailed and with a great imaging (something which they have lived up to).

Picked up a pair of birdseye maple Ref1s and a Ref100 center off Audiogon. Using a ULW-10 sub, and my old TDLs as surrounds for the time being. All driven by a Yamaha HTR-5950 (which I bought before I knew my HT would be a collection of 4 ohm speakers!) and an Oppo 970.

I love the Ref1s so far, particularly for music. However, even for HT they are impressive. As I type this my wife & I are watching Desperate Housewives, and every now and then the clarity and imaging of the voices causes me to look up at the TV involuntarily, as if somebody else were in the room. Pretty cool stuff, and I can hardly wait to go through my music collection, and start experimenting with SACD & DVD-A.

Well, after many months on the fence I finally placed my order today: 3 x-cs speakers and an ulw-10 sub in satin black. Good thing too, as the x-cs was almost sold out for March 30th shipment already. Now the fun of waiting begins! I will finally be able to post some informed opinions after listening to these bad boys!

Which one you guys will prefer for 50-50 Movie/Music setup?

1) 5 x Ref 1s with UFW-10 sub

or

2) RS450 fronts, RS200 Sig center and RS250MKII surrounds with UFW-10 sub.

I have got 1 pair of Ref 1s since last 2 weeks (yet to be connected as I was away from home - perhaps tomorrow they will be) and saw the above RS450 based package on sale, so I am kind of undecided which way to go.

Opinions/comments from those owning (or heard) either (or both) setups will be highly appreciated. Rockets are huge so return shipping will be killer, but I am planning to give them a listen any way.
