Ok so I'm going to throw this over to the experts. I have a main home theater room with the more expensive separate components, and I want to go much more minimalist for my living room. I have a 50" Panasonic plasma on the wall and I want either a small, inexpensive 5.1 system for the room.

Originally I thought I would go with a stylish 2.1 system like the Denon S101 or 301, but I really think I'd like 5.1. What I don't want is a home theater in a box.

Requirements:

$1000 budget max

No DVD player needed

5.1 (no 7.1) speakers

Speakers must be small and stylish

Need a receiver

So I'm essentially looking for something that would appear stylish and small like a HTIB without being one.

Any suggestions?

Hah! Too many to list. Might check out PSB Alpha sets. I've seen 5.1 PSB sets for $495 and up. People will drop names such as Ascend, BIC, Aperion, Monitor Audio, a whole bunch more. Gotta listen for yourself man. good luck!

Oh forgot to add, the PSB are not the sexiest. I think the money went towards sound. How stylish are we talking here? Ok, also Mission seems to be a "well-kept secret", will be near impossible to audition those without a US distributor. TSTO in Philly sells em. Also, not the sexiest, at least in that budget.

This is about the best I could come up with on your budget.
With the reviewer it puts you over your budget.
So you may want to get the front 3 speakers left, center, right and the sub, get the receiver and get the 2 surround sound speakers later.........

I have not heard those, might be a good match for what you want. Maybe surf the web to see if you can get a better price. Good luck with your find.

Ok guys, now that I've decided on speakers, I need to nag you about receivers for the speakers What I need is the cheapest possible receiver that will power this speaker set based on the following specs:

http://www.kef.com/kefamerica/ht3000/specifications.htm

There are specs for the surrounds, the center, and the sub.

I need absolutely no video options in the receiver, as I am connecting my HD-DVD player and all other components straight to my plasma. All I need is a cheap, good brand name receiver that can power this package sufficiently and can handle audio inputs from my HD-DVD player and cable box. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Try some Marantz products, especially older models. The newer ones started the x001 convention, where x = 4,5,6,7,8. The older ones had the xx00 convention, where xx = 53,54,55,56 etc.

I can't speak to which KEF system is better, but have you seen this? http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ures/544999293

I can second the Marantz recomendation, IIRC the receiver I linked earlier was tested and met specs.

I'd just get the best stereo speakers you can buy, instead of going 5.1. I think you'll be more satisfied.

Hey guys,
Well I wanted to give you an update. I decided to preorder an Onkyo 605 receiver for $399 to go along with the Kef 3005 speakers above I am also ordering. This is the new HDMI 1.3 receiver with Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio all for $399!! I think this combination of speakers and receiver for a combined $1425 is going to blow people away! And its stylish too! I'm pretty excited. Thanks so much!!

A good friend has these, and it is a nice setup. once you are in this price range, I'd recommend you check out the orb People's choice. My opinion is subjective, but I much prefer my orbs for HT than my buddies KEFs. www.orbaudio.com
Plus, I think the orbs are far cooler looking.
