So is the RAAL Ribbon tweeter that much of an improvement over a dome tweeter? Has anybody been able to compare any of the Ascends with the RAAL vs a Goldenear Speaker?

Thanks

FYR, the GoldenEars use AMT tweeters, not domes.

Incredibly well. There's zero distortion and incredibly wide dispersion so voices, explosions, effects, everything sounds very realistic and as if it isn't coming from the speakers. Watching the latest Star Wars movie is fantastic, the lightsabers sound even better than in the theater. You can hear all of the sizzling and crashing sounds when they strike each other. Another movie that really amazed me was The Revenant. All of that screaming and bear noises and warfare. Holy hell it was almost upsetting. You could feel those screams. I cringed more than a few times and haven't watched the movie again yet.

My favorite movie is The Blues Brothers which I've watched hundreds of times and the amount of detail you can hear in the horns and the way the crowd sounds in the background is so incredible it's like you're there. Highly addictive. I basically never stop watching movies from when I get home till I go to bed.

So with a lot of speaker lines, we know that companies usually use the same drivers in the bookshelves and the towers. For the most part the sound generally stays the same between them except you obviously get more bass as the speaker gets bigger and more drivers are added. Typically the rule of thumb is that if you like the sound of a bookshelf then you'll like the tower if you need more bass.
Since the Sierra 2 and the raal towers use different versions of the tweeter, how different do they sound? Is the rule of thumb thrown out the window?
Also, I may have missed it, but I didn't see any crossover points btw the drivers listed on the website. Does anyone know what they are? Are they the same for the Sierra 2 and the tower? TIA

RAAL recommend 1.8KHz crossover for the 70-20xr and 2.8KHz for the 70-10, since Ascend uses custom version of both tweeters, I would think the value will be slightly different but not too far off

As far as how similar or how different the Tower w/ RAAL and Sierra-2 sound, I would say the sound signature is very closely matched, they may not sound exactly the same, but timbre match is really good, both has the same tonal balance and presentation, you defintly will not think they are from different line of speakers, you simply get more performance wise with tower than the bookshelf

5.2.4 HT - Sony XBR75X850C, Denon X6200W, Monitor Audio GS60, GSLCR, GSFX, C380LCR x 4 & Martin Logan Descent I x 2
2 Channel Only - Ascend Sierra Tower w/ RAAL, Bluesound Vault, Mapletree Audio Line 2C RM, Parasound Halo A21 & Martin Logan Depth

Try this thread for some good dynamic soundtracks The New Master List of BASS in Movies with Frequency Charts
(there's a similar thread on data-bass.com's forums you might check out also).

If you simply use the speakers for your pleasure as you get to that point where they're fully broken in, then you'll get shining soon enough.

Just want to add to your analysis. With the creation of the Sierra 2 you also had a new custom woofer that SEAS makes for Dave:

"Proprietary 6” long-throw Curv™ woofer, non-resonant cast magnesium frame, radially reinforced surround, SEAS SpiderRing® technology, vented pole-piece and vented spider. Custom made for us by SEAS of Norway."

The new woofer design let Dave increase its size from 5.25" to 6". I suspect that the Sierra 1 and the towers share the same SEAS woofer based on specs. With the new custom tweeter and woofer, Dave also designed a new crossover, so it's very unlikely that the Sierra 2 and the Towers share anything part wise - ex bamboo. Given the difference in drivers and cabinet size no way the two are crossed similarly.

I did my 2 upgrades myself, the new woofer used on the 2 is very impressive compared to the one it replaced. IMO it should be a bigger part of the discussion when talking 2 v other Ascend speakers and their competition. That doesn't mean the RAAL isn't special too

I would agree with all of the above comments. I'm nearly 100% home theater and the Sierra 2's are plenty dynamic enough (particularly when paired with appropriate sub woofer age). They excel will voices ( both male and female), and image and soundstage as good as anything I've ever heard. They sort out even complex mixes in a satisfying and resolving way with no brightness (at least to my ears in my system in my room)

Nope...I asked PSA for some samples and Tom send me the entire veneer collection along with a travel mug....

The mug is what sold me....jk..lol.

I suspect others could follow suit, I know Nathan @ Funk Audio has done the same upon request....for me though...I am not just buying speakers but furniture quality finish is essential for me. It's a simple enough request if doable from s mfg standpoint.

I posted this somewhere else but this might be a better place to put it. 12 plus years ago I purchased an ascend acoustics 5.1 system. I'm having a small theatre room designed and to save money would like to use this system but add 4 in ceiling speakers and a Atmos receiver.

Ascend doesn't offer in ceiling speakers and I need it to look good with the design. Are there any in ceiling speakers someone would recommend that would complement what I currently have. Or, am I just going to have to buy a new system with a different company-recommendations there?

thanks

I also have an Ascend system. I went with JBL in ceiling speakers, but many on the "Best Speakers for Atmos" thread speak very highly of the RSL in ceilings. They are around $250. I don't believe matching the ceiling speakers with your mains is critical in an Atmos array. I can't comment on the JBL's yet because my refurb is not yet completed. Should be good to go in a few weeks.

Tknice over at the Ascend forum used the HTM 200 SE speakers for Atmos In Ceilings, here's some pictures of his setup. He did a great job getting them into the ceiling and he says they sound fantastic.

http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/sho...4170#post54170

If you don't want to go through all of that you can always get in-ceiling speakers from another company. Many have said it isn't a big deal to mismatch the atmos speakers. I hear great things about JBL and GoldenEar.

One other question on Ascend. Is it worth the money to upgrade what I have from 12 years ago. I've seen they have some new stuff

Using PSB Imagine XA for Atmos and they blend very well with the Ascends. Might be worth looking into their in-ceiling line.

Dina at Ascend was kind enough to take a picture with a Sierra bookshelf and Horizon cabinet side by side.

I ended up going with the black satin instead because I'm not a fan of the redder cherry finish of the Horizon.

Has anyone mixed a horizon nrt with sierra 2 l/r? There's a good deal on horizon in the for sale section this cheaper than a b stock sierra 2 center.
