Guys I just pulled the trigger on the 5.1's. I'm super nervous about going ID and yet very excited because of the reviews I've read on them.....

How do you guys feel about the 5000 series? They say they like it? Will I have any problems with 12 gauge speaker cable using the Yamaha 1700 and the Swan 5.1s?

Swans website is pretty accurate from what I can tell and seem to match with what Jon is saying. I have access to an impedance meter (which is what you need, not a ohm meter) and could check but I would go by the Swan specs.

First disconnect the speaker from your system so it is by itself, then just connect a multimeter's red lead to the speaker's postive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal and set the multimeter to the resistance/ohm setting. As others have pointed out, this measures resistance, not impedance, but I've tested several speakers this way and it is usually "in the ballpark".

Sure, why wouldn't it? The binding posts on the Swans are huge, no worries there.

How does the C3 stack up as far as centers in its price range?? would a sub- $300 price be a good deal?? im hoping to buy 5.1's a little after christmas hopefully...ive just heard such great things about swan and their products...i dont want to pass up a good thing! I would be powering them with a Harmon Kardon 635 (i hope would be enough power till i can afford a better amp) Thanks for any help!!

Ben,

The c3 matches very well with the 5.1s. I would select it over the c2. The 5.1s and c3 make for an excellent front set for HT use.

I haven't heard the 6.2s but I do own the 5.2s (they're for sale actually only because I'm upgrading to Dana 980is). I have not heard the latest models of Paradigms but I did audition the 100 v.3s a couple of times and thought they were good but not worth over $2000. I also preferred B&W DM604 s3s to the 100 v.3s and I prefer the mids and highs of the Swan 5.2 over the B&W so by default I prefer Swans over the Paradigm too.

YMMV and of course my opinions don't apply to the v.4s which I haven't heard.

so i received my Swan Diva 5.1's yesterday....wow i love them, amazing bang for the buck!!! amazing clarity! bass isnt all there, but at least its tight and accurate. Even has amazing detail at low volume levels. The music just opened up to my ears, there is just so much that i hear (compared to some Klipsch F-2's that i owned previous to this, they were nice but very harsh, waaaaay to much fatigue) that i did not before. I was able to sit down yesterday for like 2 hours and just listen to music, and today i have been listening for a couple hours as well and i love them! Now im ready to put them to the test. I just purchased the LMC-1/LPA-1 combo from emotiva. I cant wait to hear the difference separates make! im going to push these babies like crazy and have some freakin rock concerts in my apartment

Good to hear you love the 5.1s! Wait till you hear them with the larger amp...they will open up even further. Do you have a sub in the mix? Taking some the bass load off the 5.1s will help them mids and tweets.

Glad to hear someone talkking up the 5.1s since mine haven't arrived yet...I'm getting nervous :noes:

I'm powering them with the Yamaha V1700...so hopefully that will do them at least a little justice and hopefully they'll spank the Monitor 9's that were at the top of my B&M list.

Not to mention, they will only get better with around 200hrs of break in, if you want to speed the process up and also demagnetize your cd system, check out the isotek system enchancer http://www.isoteksystems.com/cds.asp

Thanks John!!! The 4.2R's finally came in this morning.

FEDEX "forgot" to put them on the truck on their last stop before they got to Orlando. I was suprised they owned up to the error.

To give them some scale I propped up my Blackberry Curve next to them.

For me it had alot to do with room configuration, and the inability to hide speaker stands. After getting alot of feedback on how these would fill more area with sound for my specific purpose, it was an easy choice. The fact that John is selling these for a phenominal price right now didn't hurt either!

I have
6.1's as mains
C3 center (top mounted tweeter)
R3's rears
A single 2.1 rear-center
HSU VTF-3 (1st generation)

I power this with a Denon 3805, which I love, and have no impulse to upgrade, except for advanced codecs someday.

I have the 6.1's set to large and all others set to small. I have the crossover set to 80Hz. I can't decide if i want the sub set to "all + mains?" or just leave it alone.

How do those settings sound to everyone? Without hearing them, is there anything that stands out that should be changed?

thanks,

ej

i would think most people with the 6.1s might in fact cross them over lower around 65hz or so (if not using them full range), but that is up to you, the 6.1s are known for their low end command. Try tinkering around with your bass management and determine which setting you feel integrates better with your system and room.

thanks, i'm not sure it can cross-over below 80Hz. do you agree with the speaker size? how about sub+main?

I think the only thing that matters is what sounds best to your ears. I glanced at the manual and it seems that you have advanced settings where you can set the crossover point on all the speakers that you have designated "small", if that in fact is the case, figure as a genral rule of thumb to set your xover on these speakers 20hz+ to that of their printed specs.... I don't own a receiver so i cant comment on the Lfe+main feature...But again try it out and see what you might like. You might try, If you can set everything to "small"
6.1s to 60hz
c3 to 80hz
2.1 to 80hz
You might find you'll have a better bass synergy between your mains and sub, if their low end frequency range isnt overlapping/cancellation(small overlap of 20hz). If that in fact is not possible then set your speakers as you have mentioned, Mains to "large" and everything else to small @ 80hz.

Does anyone know if these are double boxed? My wife said the boxes looked to be in rough shape, tape ripped off of them and banged up...(what that means to my wife I dunno).

The 5.1s are amazing... one of the first thing i did though, was get rid of the brass jumpers, either make some jumpers out of extra speaker cable and or buy speaker cables that are triwire-able or you could always tri amp them!
