Yours will be twins to mine! I just today received the speaker sent to Jim for repairs after an 'oops' by the prior owner AFTER I had paid for them. After some quick negotiations it was decided that if anyone could make this speaker whole again it would be Jim Salk and company. I'm amazed at the level of repair considering the damage that was done to the upper corner. The damage has vanished. I did manage to put one ding on one edge while putting the plinth on in my rush to FINALLY listen to these in stereo. DOH! A black marker erased all traces of that little chip. Curly cherry is a great looking finish and the black edges help erase fumbling hands.

I have the OW2 tweeter and it sounds as good as any tweeter I've ever heard and better than almost all of them. I've owned ribbon tweeter speakers before from Infinity - and had some Emotiva Airmotiv's with the Air Motion Tweeter. It didn't do much for me. I sold them. These I won't sell - unless I get a fantastic deal on some of Jim's other line of speakers. Maybe something in the Veracity line.

What is amazing is the level of bass I'm hearing from these 5" drivers! I've read the reviews so I shouldn't have been surprised but I am. I won't have to integrate a sub with these - all the better! The mid bass is better than any other speaker I've ever heard and I've heard lots of very good speakers. These will crush my buddies Revel B32's - not eve close. He's gonna cry when he hears these. The Revels are good but these are better!

You won't read anything bad from me. I paid $1600 6 years ago for Emotiva's TOTL ERT towers. For all that time I doubted I could have gotten as good with any other speaker. Man! I wasted 6 years and I'm not that young! Not that the ERTs are a bad speaker - just that these are so damned good! There doesn't appear to be any weaknesses in the music presentation with these speakers. If anything there is a tad too much bass but that is probably the house curve from about 45-75hz that is emphasized by 10db in the middle of that 'hump'. I'll learn to live with it.

When all else fails - RTFM!

I had a Def Tech system similar to yours a number of years ago. I found that they did not do music very well. I went from the Def tech system to Dynaudio and found them to be much better with music. I eventually bought a pair of SongTowers and Song Center with the dome tweeter. They are outstanding with music and I think you will be amazed at how music is reproduced much more accurately with Salk speakers when compared to Def Tech speakers.

Im still debating the dome tweet vs ribbon.
Its sort of just boiling down to what I can afford though as well .
All around it sounds like the domes are awesome!

You are going to love how those speakers look. Mine are similar (curly cherry with black dye and black edges that fade into the veneer). I recently ordered some more Salks (8 just isn't enough) and when I was doing some research, I did a google image search for "salk ss8". There was a picture of a bunch of Salks finished like mine and I thought, "Wow! Nice speakers!". It took me a minute to realize that the picture was actually of my speakers in my old house. It's hard (impossible?) to beat the fit and finish of Salks.

I went with the dome tweeter as the ribbon option for three speakers (LCR) was a bit over my budget at the time. I've heard the ribbon on STs and Veracity STs. A very nice sounding tweeter without a doubt. But I have no regrets about the choice of the dome tweeter.

Once you place your order have a doctor place you into a shallow coma for a few weeks. Waiting for the build and delivery is excruciating.

That may be! I was fortunate enough to find that pair that do come up for sale on rare occasion.

Yes, if you're not particular about your finish--which, given these are Salks, means you're crazy--there are some great deals to be had on second hand Salks.

So true in that there are very good deals to be had on Salk speakers on the used market. I was very fortunate recently to find a mint pair of Salk 1801-TLs for $1145 shipped to my door. The finish is standard curly cherry which is lighter than my preference but that's fine considering the savings on these outstanding sounding speakers . The added bonus was the seller was a real nice guy and he packed each speaker as if they came direct from Salk.

I found these pics of Songtowers on the Salk website, with the Raal Ribbon Tweeter upgrade it said they were Songtower RT, but they look different . Are they both ribbon tweeters? What's the difference?

I found these pics on the" speakers available now" link on the salk website. Both were described as Songtower RT.

The first picture is an early ribbon tweeter model that featured LCY ribbon tweeters (if I recall correctly). The later (and current) models use the RAAL tweeter.

Ok, I actually just googled Raal ribbon tweeter, and came across a picture of the LCY tweeter and it matched. Cool , thanks for clearing that up, it was driving me nuts. lol

The LCY tweeter is a Chinese made ribbon that is very good. It had been used in a number of Salk speakers.

When the SoundScape speakers were first developed, it used the excellent and somewhat more expensive Raal tweeter which were newly available. If I remember correctly, around the same time that Jim Salk developed a steady supply arrangement with Raal, LCY had some quality control problems that resulted in a limited supply of their tweeters for some time. So Salk switched over to Raal ribbons instead of any other because of the better sound quality and greater availability.

None of the Salk speakers made with LCY tweeters have any problem. If you like their finish, those used speakers can be great deal.

The "Supercharged" SongTowers use the Raal tweeter. The standard SongTowers use the dome tweeter. I'm sure Jim would build a SongTower using the stadard drivers but with a Raal tweeter as well if you wanted.

Perhaps I'm misreading your post, but it sounds like you think a RAAL combined with the standard woofers would be a new design. That's actually been available for several years, and pre-dates the SC ST.

Sorry Dennis. That's not what I meant. I was just adding further detail to my last post, indicating that the standard SongTower features a dome, the Supercharged has the RAAL and there is also the option of upgrading only the tweeter (like the picture in post 9435).
