I think you have them backwards. It is my understanding the tweeter is suppose to be on the inside... From the pics it appears to be on the outside.

Those look amazing, intamin! Congrats and welcome to the family.

That's another thing I love about the ST's; they sound great even in less than ideal setups. Awesome!

Enjoy!

Haha, college life is going very well! The joys of working a crappy, but incredibly easy job that pays well enough while in school and having no expenses! Speakers have been on for about 8 hours now, and I'm noticing subtle changes for the better, can't wait to really break them in! Thanks everyone!

There is a pair of SongTower RT's (ribbon tweeter) for sale due to an owner having to back out because of unfortunate circumstances. The link is below. The speakers are ready for immediate shipment.

Someone needs to pick these up. I really hope they do! I can't imagine with all the interest surrounding these speakers though that they will last for very long. Hope Paul doesn't have to get them with his unfortunate bad news.

I've heard the same thing, but it may well be an audio urban legend. Since the ST's are sold in mirror image pairs, the radiation pattern to the sides will always be the same between speakers no matter how you mount them. I don't really know why there would be an absolute advantage to having the "short distance to the side" nearest each other in a stereo pairing. You have diffraction effects to either side. I don't think one is "better" than the other. But it's easy enough to experiment. My guess is you won't hear any difference, and if you do, I bet you would have heard the opposite outcome if you thought the opposite pairing was supposed to be right....but hey--switch those things and let us know.

I don't know if Salk recommends the tweeter in or not. But generally speaking, speakers that have an offset array, mirror image, placing the array to the outside provides a wider soundstage. But as only the tweeter is offset maybe it doesn't work that way.

I am pretty sure I saw Jim mention that the offset tweeters go to the inside, but I could be wrong... I think it was over at audio circle.

That is the conventional wisdom, and Jim may well have recommended that orientation, but it really isn't gospel. I keep meaning to experiment myself, but then I'm very lazy.

Cool - gotcha.

And you aren't lazy. You designed a new crossover for the RT's, which is hardly lazy.

Thanks for the link, Swerd. Tom did a great job with the review. I very much enjoyed it.

Is it just me, or is his "in-room response" quite amazing? Nice!

I would be interested to know if changing the orientation would make any major change to the soundstage.
With my fully mirror imaged pair of speakers having the array to the outside doesn't hurt the phantom center one little bit, but they do present an even wider soundtage that way.
Having just read that review of the ST, and his mention of the soundstage not being as wide as he would have liked, would certainly be a good reason to try them switched to hear if it makes any difference. Unless its already been tried in the shop, and it didn't.

If I didn't already pick up the 5 speaker Song set, I would have picked up those ST R/Ts in a hurry. I would have liked to experience the ribbon tweeter sound.

They should sell quickly enough!

As far as the offset tweeters, I suppose we should let Jim answer that one. I know that it says in my manual to put them on the inside, but a good technical explanation would be nice.

I will say that when I switched the order, I didn't notice any difference. Not exactly a scientific test, but still.

I honestly didn't notice much of a difference either when I had them swapped to ensure the tweeters were voiced at the same dB, but I wasn't paying much attention to it at the time (other things on my mind).

Probably such a minute difference (a matter of inches) that it will be affected as much if not more by actually moving the speakers around in the room.
