** If your current set up has no problem , then we don't recommend to have any firmware update .**

**The update is set for some hardware HDMI handshaking problems, BD disc audio format display problems**

**GUI rolling word speed up ...**

**The best environment for update is using wired LAN cable hooked with AVP.**

**Make sure the ISP you are using can pass all the data from Denon server .**

**It will freeze the AVP if the update cannot complete.**

I was given permission by The President/Owner of Audioholics (Gene DellaSala) to post a re-print of a comprehensive information page about the firmware updates he has on the Audioholics website. Thank you to Gene for allowing me to share this most helpful information here on our thread.

Also Gene has started a Denon AVP-A1HDCI / POA-A1HDCI Review Support Thread . Gene will be supporting this product there and has direct contact with Denon to answer any questions. This is an excellent companion site for our AVP/POA owners thread.

Denon AVP-A1HDCI & AVR-5308CI Firmware Update

*Anyone considering this update should proceed with caution as some AVP owners have experienced some serious unit freeze ups and operational issues. More info on this will be provided as it becomes available.*

[update] 08/10/08

After hearing about the success that AVP owners are having with the update here recently, I decided to give it a go myself. I'm happy to report that my AVP update was successful and went through without a hitch. The update took exactly 61 minutes. So it "seems" as though whatever problems were there before, may have now been corrected. After the update I tested the music streaming to make sure that was ok, it was fine.

Firmware

Denon has just announced firmware updates for their flagship AVP-A1HDCI 12CH A/V Processor. There are two updates which are tabulated below. The updates will only benefit users experiencing these operational issues. All updates are cumulative; meaning the latest one will include the previous ones if the unit had not been updated prior. These update corrections are for North America units only – other updates are available for other markets as well.

Models Affected: AVP-A1HDCI, AVR-5803CI

SUBJECT: Correction of the Firmware via DPMS (Denon Product Management Server)

Update #1 April 16th, 2008

SYMPTOM:

If "Hi-Def-signal" of 720p inputs to the unit, it can scale to "1080i" but can not
scale to "1080p".

"Pop" noise occurs when the muting function turns on.
The noise occurs when the input selector is changed.
A different digital signal might be output to "OPT-4" output.
The connectivity of HDMI is improved.

CAUSE: The malfunctions occurred due to bugs in the firmware.

COUNTERMEASURE: corrected the firmware so that no malfunction occurs.

Update #2: June 16, 2008

SYMPTOM:

Addition of the Rhapsody Merge function.
When space is used for the character of SSID, Wi-Fi cannot be set.
Problem for Tuner preset memory when RDS is received.
Scroll speed of "Artist" becomes slow when playback music files with DLNA by network-audio.
Spelling error on web browser display. "Controler" > "Controller"
MVUP/down (master volume up/down) command can affect zone 2 volume if any zone 2 command has been recently sent.
No title via internet radio with the new firmware version 1.60.
When AVP-A1HDCI connects Marantz DV9500 with EXT.IN connection and chose "Monitor2", Sound output stops.
The disc where "Dolby Digital" and "TrueHD" are alternately recorded is reproduced. And, when "Dolby Digital" and "TrueHD" are promptly switched, the sound is not outputted.
When the stream signal of "DTS-HD MA 7.1ch" is reproduced by setting "5.1ch", the sound is distorted.
Noise occur from surround channel when playback a blue-ray disc "The Golden Compass" when connected AVP-A1HDCI and DVD3800BD.
The connectivity of "HDMI" and "CEC" is improved.

CAUSE: The malfunctions occurred due to bugs in the firmware.

COUNTERMEASURE: corrected the firmware so that no malfunction occurs.

Connect straight thru Ethernet cable from your router to the AVP-A1HDCI
Enter “Manual Setup” > “Option Setup” area of OSD
Select “Firmware update”

Do NOT use a wireless connection when updating firmware and make sure there are no power interruptions during this process. The update can take up to one hour which during the process will render your AVP-A1HDCI/ AVR-5308CI inoperable.

At first I thought that I would have never purchased it because of the size and because of too many features that I would never use... I don't have a dedicated HT room but a living room with four full range speakers and a subwoofer. It seemed to me an overkill. But, after reading posts in the introductory forum and the lack of "smaller packages" at the moment, I decided to buy it and I did. It should arrive in a couple of weeks if all goes well.
Thanks for your inputs guys.

I have been thinking about this too. 95% of the settings of the AVC/AVR/AVP are the same, so the amp guys can learn alot from us and vice versa.

Anyway here is a picture of my setup at the moment. No stand yet so the AVP and POA are on the floor on granite tiles. I designed my own stand and I am having it delivered next week. The POA is configured in bridged balanced mode for the 802Ds, and I am going to test bi-amp mode and bridged balanced bi-amp mode on Saturday afternoon!

My current system is:

AVP-A1HD
POA-A1HD
B&W 802D
PS3
SkyHD
Dell XPS 1730 and 24" 1920x1200 monitor
QED Genesis Silver Spiral speaker cable

Want list:

2 more 802D
HTM1D
1 more POA-A1HD
2 x ASW855
Denon DCD-SA1
Denon BDP-A1HD universal player

That sounds like a great idea! Will definitely change the title to include the amp as well.

Seth, I too want to thank you for starting this thread. I'm on the fence concerning the AVP and plan to use it mainly for 2/multi-channel music and occasionally for HT. Have you had much time to play with streaming lossless audio and if yes, how to you like the AVP's interface for viewing and managing content?

Thanks again.

Great... This thread will be helpful for the new owners.

Eric,

I am not Seth, but I will chime in about the Network audio. I am streaming .flac files from my NAS drive (that runs Twonky). The Sound Quality is very good. It beat my Sonus system. I am assuming that this is becuase the Sonus system uses a coaxial out and could be affected by jitter a bit. The sonus also could use a better power supply. the sonus is very convienient, but the AVP has a more pure sound. It provides an expansive soundstage.

The Interface is OK. I have been spoiled by the Sonus' Ipod like interface. The Denon is limited by its 5 key setup. It is a basic text type interface. It seems to suffice for small to medium music collections. I wouldn't want to scroll through a huge collection though. My collection is ~150 CD right now and the Denon interface is fine for that.

Have you had much time to play with streaming lossless audio and if yes, how to you like the AVP's interface for viewing and managing content?

Thanks again.

Eric

I'll start the bitch session

One of the problems with the pre and remote is the labelling of the inputs. Why would they bother with VCR in this day and age? If I was using a VCR, I doubt I'd be using HDMI as an input.

Anyway I've renamed a few of my inputs to Sonos' HD-DVD' Blu Ray' HD-STB', then I forget which is which on the remote and tend to find it easier to rotate the input select dial on the pre.

I just picked up my Denon today and started playing with it, but I have to agree right away about the network audio. I have hundreds of CDs ripped onto a NAS (flac files), and having tested various network players, nothing came close to Sonos usability. That hasn't changed. While the Denon has built in streaming capability, I don't think they meant to compete with dedicated players like the Sonos. It's a pretty crude interface.

In my HT, where I have my best equipment (even for 2 ch listening), I've had a ZP80 connected via optical cable to my receiver. Sonos' biggest plus and limitation remain the same with the Denon, where it's now connected via digital coax to the CD input. You must still use its interface (either the handheld remote or the desktop controller) for navigation. But this is a relatively small price for the far-friendlier GUI it offers. And honestly, it has never sounded better....

Where I think the streaming capability will more likely shine is internet radio. (Well, to the extent that internet radio can shine...it's pretty compressed.) I have yet to play with that, as there is some set-up involved on a Denon website, but I'll report back on that if anyone is interested.

The Denon remotes are not much. Get a universal like the 880 or 890 and forget about the Denon. The way I look at it is for a 7k price a nice pre programmed universal should be included. Heck, raise the price $300 and include one.

Isn't that always the case with manufacturers' remotes, though? They never seem to show the new input names. I think they assume anyone with this kind of equipment operates it with some fancy universal remote that incorporates the features the user wants.

My gripe (not just with the Denon): Why the hell do they put so many RCA and S-Video inputs on a unit like this?? The back is always full of these things! And you're right....VCR? How 1997....

P.S. What's HD-STB? I'm sure it's obvious, but I don't know that one.

I tried adding the A1HDCI, and it told me there was a device in its library called and AVP A1.

Do any of you Harmony remote users have your remote working with the AVP? If so, do you have any tips/suggestions?

Thanks,
Darrell

Isn't the "AVP A1" option correct?
Comment: I just pulled up the Hrmony software and attempted to add the AVP. At first blush, it looks like that AVP A1 is the correct device. The standard buttons look right and is has about 14 pages of soft buttons. Sounds about right!

haha I foudn the same with my 4308 and its remote. VCR ? huh why ? in the end I put the HDPVR onto DVR, and left hddvd on DVD and blu-ray on HDP.

anyways hoping to get a hamony 1000 to go with the pre. you tried the harmony with the avp as yet spearmint ?.

guys HD-STB is indeed a High definition set top box, as is the HDPVR or high definition personal video recorder I have. we use these things for free to air high definition TV over here in OZ. high definition cable I think has only just come or coming...

Thanks, you picked it in one! Well nearly...

It's for our Free To Air TV we currently have Analog, Standard Definition Digital, and High Definition Digital services available, and because no projectors, and most TV's until very recently didn't come with digital tuners we use Set Top Boxes instead.

Al, can you pick me up a VCR with HDMI out while you're in the US? (J/K)

No I haven't tried the 1000i remote in the HT as currently its duties are in the family room. I'll look at purchasing another once my current financial situation settles down a bit.

I would use it for my D-VHS deck with HDMI.... I would use a different input for my other D-VHS deck with only component.

Wow! I'm gone for the day (out of town), and I log on and see tons of new post! Excellent guys! Looks like we're getting this thread going with a bang!

Now I've got a question for you all. I've changed the thread title to include the POA amp, but I had originally wanted it to say "Official Denon preamp model AVP-A1HD/AVP-A1HDCI and Denon amplifier model POA-A1HD/POA-A1HDCI owners thread. Well I was told that the title length was a tad too long and as such was shortened by the moderator.

So I am curious, is it ok as it is now? Or should I have it changed to "Official Denon AVP-A1HD/AVP-A1HDCI and POA-A1HD/POA-A1HDCI owners thread"?

Since this thread is all of ours, I think it would only be right to get your input.

I like the shorter version, but honestly, I don't think it matters too much. Only people who recognize the weird model names will venture through anyway. You did good, and thanks for starting the thread. I just picked up my AVP and I'm looking forward to all of us getting to know these awesome components together.
