Btw. with the new SR875 - fw. 1.07

I can confirm that Setup+Enter invokes the : Save Settings ? - Menu
And pressing Enter one more time does nothing , it never writes(says) settings saved.

Setup+Return says : Save failed

/Bingo

I saw the same thing initially but I was hitting return. As soon as I tried the correct "enter" it worked for me. Too much interchangability of return and enter from pc's was my problem. The save failed message was the restore function saying the save failed because it had not been done since the reset after firmware update.

There are three pages to the PDF on the firmware update - I'm not sure if page 3 is necessary if you've completed the second page - please let me know.

I ran the update under the app updater - it seemed to update the firmware OK.

I see Firmware update -3 (installable setup executable)- is that only to be be run if Firmware update -2 doesn't work or do you have to run both? (I'm not sure if there is more than one section to the firmware like there is for the DSP).

Thanks

I played a concert DVD with my Oppo 970 CD/DVD player as usual with my monitor on. The Oppo is connected to the 8.8 only by an HDMI cable and the monitor (70" Sony XBR2) is connected to the 8.8 also by a HDMI. While playing the DVD, I turned off the monitor and the audio continued playing from the Oppo. At about 2 minutes into this, the sound stopped breifly for a few seconds but returned thereafter. So apparently in my case, that fix worked as stated.

Did it not work before? AFAIK the Oppos have always worked fine whether the display was on or off, no matter what display it was. One of their many virtues.

Can't wait for the 805 fw update. I have two older dvd players a Toshiba and a Sony. Which one should I use? I do need optical cables correct?

You have to keep holding setup the second time you hot enter as well.

So I couldnt find the right cable to borrow from work so I went to a computer store in town and asked for a 9 pin straight-thru serial cable. The guy didn't understand the terminology "straight-through" in regards to a serial cable so he asked a co-worker who told him I needed a null-modem cable. Now that i'm back from lunch I looked a a null modem cable diagram and noticed that the transmit -received cables are crossed. It doesn't look straight through to me.

Is a null modem cable what I need?

Nope. You need a "straight thru" or 'extension' cable. DB9 M/F (male one end, female the other end).
Something like this:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2
They have other lengths available, just make sure if is DB9 M/F, and not a Null Modem.

Just pick your length. With shipping, it will probably still be cheaper than buying on in-store. Monprice ships quickly too (same day or next day)

If it ain't in HD, it ain't worth watching!

A Straight through , is the same cable used for connecting a PC to a Modem.

So get a "PC 9Pin Modem Cable" it has "a male & a female" 9 Pin plug

so whats the difference between a "null modem cable" that one person says not to get and a "modem cable" that one person says I should get?

I'll take a stab at that one. A null modem cable will have two female ends, and is used usually to transfer files between two computers. It has the receive and transmit wires cross-linked.

From answers.com:

An RS-232 cable used to connect two computers in close proximity for file transfer. It attaches to the serial ports of both machines and simulates what would occur naturally if modems and the phone system were used. It crosses the sending wire with the receiving wire

Another UPDATE... I received a few PMs about the "donation" for my contact. I am taking her out to dinner (actually next Friday) and plan to maybe get her something. SO far I have received about 12 PMs. I now have the paypal account ready so feel free to send me a PM. I was only asking for members who felt like it to send $1.00. I figured if we had around 75 to 100 I could get her something from us members here at AVS. Who know, maybe she will slip me 1.10... If you can't I totally understand and I am not keeping track of who does and who doesn't. I just thought this would be a good gesture for all the risks she takes for us...

Firmware/DSP Updates= 1198... Once I get the 805 I expect it to be around 5,000 in a hurry...

Joe, I haven't actually obtained anything from you yet, but I sure plan too. Hopefully maybe you can get that main firmware update for us soon. We'd all be "up a creek" without you, so you certainly deserve it. Sweet talk her into giving you waht you need (<-talkin firmware here ).
I actually sent you $2 since I will probably need more help than others... .

Uhhhh, yeah! You answered you're own question. If you don't apply the DSP update via CD.......the DSP #'s will not change or be updated.....on your 905.

It's a two (2) part updade.... 1. main firmware 1.08 and then 2. DSP update via CD....or 1. DSP update via CD and then 2. main firmware 1.08. It doesn't matter which is done 1st as they're not related. Remember that the DSP update WILL wipe out all your settings...write them down first so you can restore them. DSP 1 & 3 numbers will change with the DSP update.

Sorry, joe. Had I known that, I would have added it to the total.....what the hell....I'll send more. For what you've done for hundreds in time invested alone, you and you're O/I friend are more than worth it.

Perhaps, you should just upload them to a free file hosting site and post the link. That would be so much easier.
