Thanks for posting. That's a pisser but no real surprise - it's clearly an Onkyo hardware defect.

Isn't it time someone promoted quality as value?

----SNIP-----

I have been loosely following this thread for months. I have seen a lot of people recently added themselves to the list for one of the dongles.

However, I have NOT seen anyone post that they have completed updating their receiver for some time! I suspect that the dongles have 'disappeared' and if you want one, you may have to research the thread and see if you can contact some of the people who have done the update and who they sent the dongle onto. Hopefully, you will be able to find a couple of them and get them back in circulation!

Other than that, someone will have to build a new one........

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I didn't think you needed a dongle to do the HDMI update?

I would agree with this. I haven't seen any "Successes" in quite some time. I wonder if alikob is still around to sell a new round of dongles?

I believe you're correct, Jason. So long as one's loader version is at 1.01, no dongle/jig is necessary. This is why I cannot understand why certain people on this list have been sitting on the circulating dongles/jigs post-update. There's simply no excuse for these things vanishing into thin air. A lot of decent and industrious people (yourself among them, Jason) worked tirelessly to come up with this solution (no thanks to Onkyo) a while back, giving of their time, energy, and materials.

I even donated my own dongle (purchased outright) for circulation late last year, and it too has since vanished. This is reprehensible!

You get the jig (dongle) by adding yourself to the the right list (East, West, etc) and put your receiver in brackets. Note that you only need the jig if your receiver is a 605; or a 705 or 805 at Vers 1.01 or 1.00. Otherwise, you can update without the jig through the RS232 port. I have updated a 705 and an 805 without the dongle and it is really quite easy.

You may wait a long time getting a jig, since there doesn't appear to be much movement on the list You can build one yourself following instructions earlier on in the thread if you are handy.

You seem to be mixing terminology (jig and dongle)--but are you saying that you can facilitate all current updates on a 705 JUST through the RS232 without a jig OR a dongle if your main FW (or is it the loader) is above 1.01? Just making sure I'm understanding what was said because it seems like now I might be able to affect all updates without needing anything other than the 232 port...

Thanks!

Yes, a jig and a dongle are different items. The dongle is simplistic, and in my case, was needed for my SR-705 to upgrade from 1.01 to 1.06. Here's a photo from the instructions:

A jig is different and according to the instructions is required for the SR-705 to upgrade the VIDEO. Here's a photo:

I'm not handy/techncial to build a jig. BUT, if you're saying I can upgrade without a jig if my firmware is certain version or above, and if it's not needed for the video upgrade, then I don't need it.

To clarify, if your receiver's LOADER version is 1.01 (irrespective of the Main Firmware version, which is separate), then you will have no need for either the jig or the dongle and can do your updates via a straight-thru serial-to-serial connection.

Okay, so, sorry if I'm 'dense here. But in the SR705 Instructions in the ZIP file, they clearly spell out that a jig is needed. Here's the screenshot from page 5 of the instructions.

Are you saying that this is incorrect and that a jig is not needed in order to upgrade the VIDEO?

Note that I've used the dongle successfully, running V1.06, have upgraded the DSP, and also recently upgrade to HDMI V1.02, so think I know how to follow what's needed to do this.

Thanks.

I updated the firmware and DSPs on an 886 tonight. I would like to verify I updated everything that can be udpated.

Firmware now reads: 87 1.04/08z22a. The DSPs read: DSP 1 SR9061-08919A, DSP 2 SR9062-08605C, and DPS 3 SR9063-08506A

My video firmware is 08703E01293. Everything else, HDMI, Sirius, etc. are all at 1.00.

Is that everything I can update myself? I just received the 886 tonight and I plan on installing it tomorrow. I would like to make sure everything is up to date before I install it, set it up, run audyssey, etc.

It's needed for video, as far as I know nobody has upgraded video.

Great, so that gets back to my earlier question 1 page back. I need to upgrade Video on my SR705, where can I get a jig? Is there a list for a jig? Surely someone has done this or has built a jig. I'm running 3.58, need to upgrade to 3.61.

I do not need a dongle.

Thanks.

Actually, my clarification was more a response to Jasonvr's post, who in turn was responding to k2_1971. I do not own a 705, so I can't 100% attest to what is exactly needed there. That said, I've seen those instructions, and frankly I still don't understand why the 705 would be singled out as requiring a jig for further updates when all the other firmware (including the loader) has been previously updated. Perhaps the illustrated instructions merely assume one's loader is outdated...? After all, for the longest time it was considered sacrosanct that only a full-blown jig assembly could be used to update ALL firmware on most of the x05 series only for a few industrious members here to later discover the virtues of the dongle. So I'm puzzled, personally. Still, as was already mentioned, no one here has updated the video via DIY. I seem to recall reading earlier in the thread that either the video or HDMI update required a hardware mod at the factory. Well I, as have several others, updated my HDMI to v1.02. So clearly that doesn't apply to the HDMI. But perhaps it applies to the Video? Can't say for sure. But I do know that no one here has reported doing it, so I'm guessing there's a reason for that....

Your question was already answered by jamesm1 above. You simply add yourself to the appropriate region on the list. (The list is for BOTH dongles and jigs, though the majority of members used a dongle after its viability was confirmed.) Last I recall, no one has spoken up as to who last had the one or two jigs that were originally put in circulation. So I'm afraid you're in for a very long wait--unless you're inclined to build one on your own, that is.

I have PM'd alikob (the original designer of the dongle and the one who was selling them). I asked him to pop his head into this thread, but I have not heard a response unfortunately.

On a different note, I actually have an FFC dongle I created and have been keeping more for sentimental reasons than anything else (heck, I still have the protoboard jig I created, but that's a different story). This dongle has never been tested, however, the prototype of it (pictured above sitting on my kitchen table), did work and was in circulation for a while. The actual dongle and the details on how to build it are here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=3997

Based on the fact that there has been almost no movement on the list, I am willing to put this dongle into circulation, but I want everyone's promise that if they receive it, they will perform their upgrade and send it on. If this one disappears, we're out of luck until someone builds another.

What I need is a technically adept volunteer from the list to make sure this dongle actually works. In all the experimentation I did early on in this process, I actually broke the connector in my receiver and can no longer use it as a guinea pig (note the breakage was not from the FFC dongle, but rather my HDMI connector based jig; the FFC is very safe and does not pose a breakage hazard to the receiver). Luckily, the breakage was after I had updated my 805 to 1.08. First technically adept person to PM me wins. After that, we need to start it circulating thru the lists in some sort of fair manner.

@jason
since this is your last dongle why not use some type of $deposit system
lets say someone pay pals you $12-$15
you send them dongle
they return dongle
you paypal them back $10, using difference for time/gas/shipping

Amazingly, no one has responded to my call for a "technically adept" tester. I'm up for anything. Your suggestion seems reasonable if others are up for it. If people are wary of this, others on this forum could probably vouch for me, or I have an eBay seller account under the same screen name.

Personally, I think the payment/deposit system is a grand idea. Human nature being what it is, I believe the dongles/jigs originally put in circulation have disappeared for one reason: People simply don't have a real appreciation for things unless they have to somehow come out of pocket for it. Otherwise, the tendancy is to take things for granted. Unfortunate to have to say that, but that's the reality.

I, for one, will gladly vouch for you, Jason. You, Alikob and several others have been real stand-up fellas throughout all this. I say make the deposit no less than $15 bucks. If your PayPal account charges any per-transaction fees (mine doesn't, for instance, as it's a Premier business account), I'd include that in the final refund along with time, postage, etc, as Zaqqaz suggested. It's really the only way to increase the odds of your dongle's return, and if it's worth it to those waiting, then they'll jump on board. An absolute no-brainer to me!

Amen to Alikob - he actually met me in a gas station to hand off the dongle, as well as help me through the install. Guy was very kind in his help. It's people like this who make Avsforum the great community that it is!

I promptly mailed the dongle back to him, putting it back in circulation. Not pleasant for me to hear that others haven't done so.

So, how much for a jig to upgrade my video!?

I think a $25 deposit with refund of $20 on return of dongle would work well.
I don't think any one would begrudge Jason the $5 trouble fee + any PAY PAL fee.
If I needed my Onk updated, I would jump on this offer in an instant.

I'm ok with this. I have a Premier PayPal account which means 2.9% + $0.30 in fees for all incoming transactions. In addition, there is the shipping charge which, via priority mail is $4.80 anywhere in the US. In addition, I can issue refund via PayPal, which will lessen the impact of fees because part of my fee will get refunded.

I propose the following:
  • $25 deposit via PayPal (please do not use "Personal Payment" as it does not let me do a partial refund, instead say it is for "Goods")
  • $4.80 in shipping
  • This causes $1.03 in fees
  • Upon return of the dongle, I will refund $15
In the interest of full disclosure, this leave me with $4.46 for my efforts of sending it out and keeping track of the PayPal. The person receiving the dongle is responsible for shipping it back. Priority mail boxes are free from the Post Office. Just have to pay for shipping (it's a little cheaper online than in the Post Office).

If people are ammenable to this, feel free to PM me and we will get this show on the road.
